ok, I’ve discovered that crystal needs to be placed in proper orientation but I haven’t found any dot mark on it. I need to turn it and check. Is it possible that I damaged something (codec?) by placing crystal wrong way?

Very unlikely. Just be careful de soldering.

I found that to be the most difficult part to solder; I managed to short two terminals on it (giving the “supercollider fail” error) and had to almost completely desolder it in order to fix it.

are you sure? what led you to this discovery? (I’ve not encountered crystals with significant polarity before).

(It needs to be the right way up, of course)

Each pad has different function.

But I’m not sure

Indeed it does! I stand corrected. (I was asking questions, not being dismissive).

There should be a dot-mark on the silkscreen of the board, and if the matching dot is not visible on the top of the chip-crystal, it looks like pad 1 has a different shape on the base - in the image you’ve linked to, look top-right - one of the pads has a shaved corner. I would imagine that’s pin 1?

no problem! :))
More thoughts and advices here – less problems for future builders.
I will confirm tommorow if it helped me.

there should be text on it right ? the text should be oriented the same way norns is oriented (jacks up)

& yes tricky to get enough contact with this one - use lots of flux and just flow as much solder under the part as flows

ehhh I have rotated crystal but still i have supercollider fail error

i’d suggest replacing the codec and crystal entirely.

Finally got my second attempt at a build going. I discovered that my PCBs from oshpark had a slight offset on the soldermask making it very easy to bridge any pad to the top or bottom planes :frowning:

You can see exposed copper to the left of pads In the following image.

I’ve used oshpark many times and never had any issue. This was using there new dark option.

only scratching the surface, so far Norns is pretty amazing. Thank @tehn and all involved. Looking forward to contributing.

I’m currently soldering my Fates kit and then moving on to the Norns shield (once the thru-hole components are in stock at whatever electronic parts place). I haven’t built any electronics since I was a kid doing ham radio stuff. But I have an idea about the Norns shield build, to put the buttons and encoders onto a separate board and attach them with wires, then build a bigger case, so basically the screen would be up top, and then the button/encoder pairs all lined up below that. Something about that kind of symmetry would be pleasing to me, for some reason. This would require short leads from the shield to the buttons and encoders. Is this going to create some kind of electrical problem, assuming I can work out the wire routing and also the right kind of spacers or whatever is needed to get that second board to be stable inside the case?

moving the buttons and knobs should be no problem.

the knobs can panel mount but the buttons will need to be first soldered to perfboard or something that you can mount to… right?

this is a nice idea… these sort of hand modifications are the reason for DIY

Right, the plan would be to solder to perfboard or something like that. Okay, cool, I’ll try it.

Interesting idea. I’ve got two more to build and am wondering if I should attempt a different form factor for the others. Could even use a ribbon cable for the connection between the pi and shield, and make it flatter/wider like a factory norns?

Any Raspberries in EU? Can’t find any stock.
