Thanks for the reply! I think they are completely pushed together. Here’s a picture:

And just a few minutes ago, the screen just froze with the sound just going. It didn’t turn black, but it didn’t change when turning encoders, etc. Oh and I remember I had it one time that the screen turned black and that the sound was cut off as well…

I’ve no idea if it fits with your issues, but I had all sorts of odd things happen with my pi shield until I got an official pi power supply. If you look at the red light indicator on the side of the pi and it’s blinking sometimes, then this indicates a power problem. Worth checking at least.

Strange thing is that I bought the Raspberry Pi 3B+ Starter Kit, which includes the official Pi PSU.
Edit: and I haven’t seen the red light indicator blinking…

Those look properly connected alright. can you provoke the blackout by messing eround with the display, or is it completely random?

Does the screen just turn off after inactivity? I thought that was by design.

yes, the screen goes black after a period of time. knock an encoder to wake it up. (it’s quite a period of time.)

fyi we are working on a shield faq as there are some differences, i apologise for the delay

thanks everyone for throwing in good information

Okay, silly me fixed the issue. Apparently there was one bad solder joint. I just figured to reflow all the solder point on the screen headers (both on the screen and on the shield PCB). That seemed to have fixed the problem. Sorry for all the fuzz, guys!

You can find all the dimensions here: https://github.com/infovore/norns-diy-panels
Though of course they depend on the type of enclosure you want to have.
The display standoffs are not in the docs as far as I remember. You’ll need 8mm long standoffs with M2 (not M2.5) threadings for those

I just snagged a pi4 Model B , and wondering when I will be able to build a Shield with this?
I understand the current disk image is for pi3b+ only?
Looking forward to jumping in! I plan on running my Norns Shield as a live fx processor in conjunction with a 1010 Blackbox for production and performance.

bumping this - very helpful

Just took my header off because I was thinking it might be the issues. I’ve had the black screen for awhile, tried reflowing joints with no luck. Starting to go a bit crazy tryin to get it working again. Any professional opinion if my shield is f’ed now?

it is probably fine. reheat your solders on the main header after you reinstall the screen header.

consider trying another sd card, and another pi, and make sure your power supply is good.

Did the SD and pi swap. I get the magic awake sounds so I know it’s working. Just wondering if the olen screen or board could be damaged at this point. How resilient are they?

Am i correct to assume this is a fully fledged norns when build?

Are the in/out jacks smd or could the be put on a wire to face upwards?

Is anyone having success with MIDI out?
I have a MIDI->USB interface and it works successfully for midi input into Norns DIY when connected to a MIDI keyboard. However nothing seems to be going in the other direction.
The interface has I/O LEDs and the output LED lights when I play from the connected MIDI keyboard.
But when Awake is playing the input LED on the interface does not light. I have set the device and midi channel in Norns System.

EDIT. I didn’t have the output set correctly in System. Oops.

i dunno, its hard to tell but the screen header pads look kinda rough to me. at this point after multiple reheatings and ripping the header out, there may well be some that are lifted. you could check continuity between the pads and the main header by referring to the layout, it will be a bit tedious. (if anyone does go through this exercise it would be nice to document the pin correspondence in a simple table form.)

and yes, it’s entirely possible to damage the OLED or its driver chip with excessive application of heat. you want to heat each leg for no more than 1-2seconds when soldering the screen header, given that it is unavoidably attached to the sensitive bits. it follows that you need to be both judicious and attentive in cleaning and tinning the tip as you go.

So i’ve built the thing and everything seems to work like a charm! Awesome UI.
The only question that’s left is there some kind of repository with scripts and how do i access it?
I’ve updated to the lates version throught wi-fi without any issues.

congrats!

yes! maiden is the norns project manager. docs here: https://monome.org/docs/norns/maiden/

if you want some jumping-off points for apps to download: https://monome.org/docs/norns/app/

any way to access repository of ready scripts from the device itself?
