and you’re on the newest norns update?

open maiden so you can see the error, and post in the orca thread

Thanks Tehn, I didnt updated Norns, now it works!

So I’m thinking about taking the Norns Shield plunge. I’ve done some Eurorack DIY kits before with good results and feel fairly confident in my soldering skills. I just have a question about the Raspberry Pi. Do I have to power the pi and the Norns, or does the Pi receive power from the Norns via USB? Sorry for the noob question.

norns is powered from the pi.

Every time I boot mine up I get supercollider fail, but then a restart via the system menu and all is fine. No idea what’s up.

Am running latest norns update.

is yours hand-soldered? if so the codec or crystal are messed up.

otherwise, try re-flashing your sdcard.

It is hand-soldered.

Everything works perfectly after I restart…this was my first soldering project but supervised by the ever generous @wheelersounds but I’d hate to take this thing apart ;(

i’ll echo that getting everything right is vvvvv tricky - i’ve had more issues with the clock crystal than the codec generally, but any part in the audio circuits can also cause supercollider fail in my experience.

i think i’ve gotten the clock off before by using relatively high heat, tweezers, and circling around and heating up every joint, maybe using a solder sucker. i either did that or just sucked out extra solder from under it. (if it’s backwards you’ll need to take it off) i think at one point i suspected that the solder was bridging underneath, so the trick on that is to use a small-ish amount of solder and lots of flux so the stuff flows right under the part

general advice, if something is wrong, try everything until it’s right. it’s an extreme test of perseverance, but rewarding once u finally get it, promise : )

I guess what I’m asking is, if I can live with the inconvenience of plugging it in, getting supercollider fail, then restarting it and having (I think) everything working, is it worth it to rebuild? Am I causing the unit damage with the current workflow? Am I missing something?

Power supply? Do you have a known good 2.5A+ rated power supply for the pi?

Sounds a bit odd that this would happen only on reboot. You might want to look at the console output (via SSH) with the dmesg command after you start up. If you see undervoltage warnings, then power supply is a potential problem. Or journalctl -r and look for errors.

This was actually the preassembled kit, all we did was solder on the headers… wish I could help you troubleshoot!

Oh whoops, shows what I know. I wish I weren’t so ignorant in all of this. Very much out of my league. Thanks to everyone for your input. I will try plugging in and checking logs. The power supply was purchased along with the Pi at MicroCenter, the sales clerk picked it out for me.

edit: “all we did” lol. =D

Ahh, I see now. Making more sense the more I read this entire thread! Thank you.

Update - I reflashed, booted right up into ‘AWAKE’

Then I configured wifi, and ran the update via system > update, went through the process, and pulled the plug after the green light went off during the ‘shutting down’ screen.

Plugged back in and I have the SUPERCOLLIDER FAIL error again.

I am connected via ssh and ran dmesg. Here are the errors:

Ive been sleeping on Norns for a great while. Buying one from europe is quiet a big investment. So This looks really nice.

But i havent soldered since I was a kid, so my question is how beginner friendly is the Shields kit that you can buy from monome?

I’m a mechanical Engineer by trade so I’m not totally lost but I haven’t soldered in a long time.

I had only attended one beginner workshop prior to attempting this and I thought it was easy. Didn’t take long either.

It was very easy to solder (smd parts already presoldered). But be careful with extra fees (i paid +85€)

Sounds promising

Yeah i guess vat and duty Will be added to the cost as Wellz

do you have a receipt which breaks down the fees? this seems very wrong.

If you purchase the SMD pre-soldered board it’s quite easy, you could easily do it with little experience. Maybe buy one of those cheap soldering training kit before so you can refresh your skills.

If you buy the bare board instead it’s quite tricky, especially ADC and Crystal. I suggest you go with the full kit if you do not have previous SMD experience.
