Anyone have a solid place to start for editing the scripts to be able to utilize a monobright mk monome? Otherwise I can use its inputs but it’s useless without feedback.

Depending on the script, you could try “reversing” the led brightness messages. I posted the details in the 64 edits thread. This won’t work for everything, but is a relatively straightforward thing to try.

Anyone out there have a nice shot of the OG Norns box or insert with these great graphics?

Dreaming of a wood top panel with some nice laser etching

display has been flaky in operation since I got my shield but now isn’t working at all. Any way to test that norns is actually loading and figure out if the display, or a connector, or something else is the issue? Finally got a case print worked out but now it won’t work.

When I hook up hdmi to a monitor I get a multicolor field but nothing else when the pi boots up

HDMI out is disabled for norns. You can SSH to the Pi and check dmesg for errors.

Its a straight connections from the Pi header to the screen header so its probably a bad join on one of the pins. I’d have a good look at them and reflow any that don’t look good.

on windows so gonna have to figure out the ssh thing, it’s all a bit out there to me  Assuming I use Power Shell somehow… Got a nub for it but haven’t gotten it on wifi before this happened ;(

I’d recommend using PuTTY for SSH - super easy to use and free

reheat solders on all connectors, try a different sd card or reflash your existing card.

can’t ssh if you didn’t already set up the network.

reburning flash card. all connections looked fine under micro but I’ll reflow them all the same. I did have the display pop out of the header while it was powered on once, wouldn’t expect that to damage the display. Wondered why getting it into the header was so hard then managed to get it better seated but no luck. Figured I wouldn’t be able to ssh … Will post with results.

After reflashing Awake certainly comes up as I can hear sounds so I know things are working save for the display…

Just a little update to say that i changed to a 3b+ RPI and it is working very well, thank you guys for your work and continued support !

FWIW - if you’re stuck with no screen and no WIFi, try connecting with SSH via Ethernet. It should work without any configuration.

The only “problem” here is you might need to scan the network to find the IP address (on Mac I use LanScan)

Am I wrong in reading that pin 3 of the display header should receive 5V? I’ve got 3 at pin 2, but nothing at pin 3. I’ve reflowed and the 5v supply is there on the gpio of the pi. I would assume that might be the issue if the oled requires 5v to display. But it looks like the OLED datasheet shows it only needs 3.3v so maybe the 5v isn’t connected.

Pin 3 on the display is not connected. Pin1 in GND, Pin 2 is 3.3v.

5v is NOT directly connected to the display anywhere.

Just grab the image from here. https://monome.org/docs/norns/norns-first.pdf

did you reflow both the header on the OLED and the header on the shield pcb? you need to do both.

@tehn

Sure did. No change. Wish there was a straightforward way to test the oled somehow, wired to an arduino or whatever to see if the issue is there.

I tried plugging in some extra usb powered devices into my norns, but I haven’t been able to reproduce the low levels issue. I wonder if it’s a timing issue with the startup code rather than a power issue? Which script were you running when you last shut down before having the low levels problem?
Anyway, good news here that I haven’t had the problem for quite a while…

there should be a tone at power up. when in doubt of that, flash again and start for awake to just begin.

i had the same issue, reflowed soldering joints several times. looked all over the net for ways to test the screen, drove me nuts! finally i spent enough time trouble shooting (time is money) and bought a new screen only yellow since they had them. that was my only fix. i wonder if some screens just flake out more easily than others. glad i did. i missed this thing too much to have not work for months. good luck!

I was running a modified version of Cranes that I had been working on. Really the only mods I’ve done are setting up communication between Cranes and the MFT (and I changed the screen layout to show parameters in a grid that lines up with the encoders on the MFT). In the init function I’ve added a call to the midi:connect function and then send a CC message to set the bank in the MFT but that’s about it. Nothing too fancy or taxing that I can think of.

I’ll see if I can get the same results by going to sleep and then booting up with a different script loaded. I’ll also try add some other devices and see what happens.
