would it be possible to add some kind of layer that transcribes all grid.led signals to max them so that really any monobright grid could be used with norns scripts or will each script need to be done individually?

got mine from microcenter

Ok, will do.
I have to guess that heatsinks are not necessary for the Shields, right?

you definitely don’t need heat sinks

Hi all - should WiFi work on these? I bought a built one. WiFi doesn’t seem to work.

please describe what you’ve tried already

more detail will make it easier to troubleshoot…for example do you have a wifi dongle?

the built-in wifi should work. what are your router settings and what have you tried?

Nope, just the little dude sitting here. I thought the pi used had WiFi built in.

unless i’m mistaken you’ll need a wifi adapter

then when it’s plugged into the usb port…select ADD, choose the network name and enter the password

Which pi are you using? My 3B+ has built-in wifi. Do you have a display, and/or can you SSH via usb?

Just getting parts together of this build.

On the github, under mechanicals, for the nylon spacers, is the 3/32" length accurate, because I can’t see anything on Mouser that even comes close to that.

You can also go with 3mm

If @Irving has a Pi 3 B (not B+) in their prebuilt one, those only have 2.4GHz wifi, any 5GHz networks won’t show. This has tripped me up on other Pi projects until I phased out the older ones. (If I understood the conversation correctly, that is.)

Edit to add: As recommended above, get a wifi nub which should solve it.

this is crazy
totally missed this feature!

thank you

the term “prebuilt” is being used confusingly here. if this is meaning an actual non-shield norns, please use another thread.

the included wifi nub with norns (not shield) only supports 2.4 i believe.

pi3B has wifi, and supports 2.4

as a simple fix i’d consider just enabling a 2.4 network on your router

Not sure if this has been answered here before, but is there any advantage to the Shield over a proper Norns, hardware-wise? I got a Norns very early on and while I liked it, I didn’t have much time to be using it at that time, so I sold it. Looking to get one again in the next batch, but also just wondering if my money is better spent on the DIY (not price:performance, mind you; literally which one is just the better box to own). Thanks, and sorry if I’m repeating old questions!

norns

  • finished, thoroughly-designed instrument: small, ergonomic, custom knobs/keys/etc
  • battery with integrated charger
  • 1/4" jacks with separate headphone + driver, very clean audio path
  • built-in eMMC storage is nominally better than sdcards, and much less hassle

shield

  • it’s DIY, optimized for price, with typical DIY tradeoffs like a plexi case
  • works with all existing norns software, so not necessarily a functional downgrade

Appreciate the fast response! Looking forward to the next batch of Norns and Grid. Looking at next month, correct?
