Hello, build a norns shield works great ! thanks to make this project available !
my digitone doesn’t show up in the norns midi menu when connected with usb,
do i need a usb midi cable or usb host ?

I’ve noticed this too actually. but my shield is missing some pullup resistors that I never bothered fixing, so that might explain it in my case…

this doesn’t make sense to me, unless the pcb was a pre-release self-made version?

see https://github.com/monome/norns-shield/blob/master/norns-shield-schem.pdf

the resistors are there

Ensure the Digitone is configured for USB MIDI in the USB Config menu. I ran into this when I got my Digitone used, the previous owner had it setup for USB Audio and not MIDI. Hopefully that’s it!

Hi everyone - I bought a used shields for parts. It has one major issue: the output jack goes in and out. The seller indicated that it could be the pi header that needs to be reflowed, but he wasn’t sure. Does this sound right? Or could it be something else like a faulty jack on the board?

Howdy!
How does the jack itself look?
Going in and out (as opposed to no output at all) sounds like the pads on the jack need some love.

Does the jack look damaged at all? (loose, cracked / melted plastic, etc)

Does putting pressure on the cable cause / fix the problem?

A pic of the board (top and bottom) would help. :v:

I have some pixels on my screen that dosn’t work. Is it easy to fix?

I have the same issue. How did you fix it? Thanks

Missed capacitors C7 and C9 in my order (47u ceramic), I wonder if it is possible to use 22u instead which I have or 47u polarized in some direction and what will be the consequences?

PM me, I’ll set ya up :cowboy_hat_face:

It was a bad screen. I emailed help@monome.org for a replacement.

Hi there -

Sorry for the delay. Here are some pictures of the input / output jacks, pi header OLED header, etc. Do you see anything that might be causing a problem?

By the way, I should been clearer about the output jack issue. It doesn’t go in and out constantly, as if something was loose - it works for an extended period of time and then it goes until I reboot.

Might be hard to diagnose based on the pics. Let me know what you think. Your help is much appreciated.

Cheers,
Ignacio

Thats a prepopulated board from Monome so all the SMD components (including the jacks) look A+

The header does look like it could use reflowing on many of the pins.

If you have solderwick on hand you can get most of it out and more or less start over on it. If not you can go pin by pin and reflow to see if that helps.

The pins with the big blobs are the most suspect as most of the solder may not have flowed in.

Happy Soldering! :v:

How risky is it to power my DIY norns from a USB battery, IE might things get corrupted if the power runs out / runs low without putting it into sleep mode first?

battery is totally ok, make sure it supports very high current output (2.5A).

power disconnection can indeed lead to corruption, try to avoid it.

Finally ordered a replacement screen for my shield after messing up the headers for it when I was building it. Can’t wait to explore and get some experiments going.

Hi
the problem, when playing some scripts, a crunch appears, it is not related to sound, but more like a lack of capacity cpu, how to solve this problem? thx
