thanks for the response! is there a certain direction the piece should be facing? it looks identical on both sides to me, i am unfamiliar with the piece though.

Wow, that is so kind of you! I think a big part of the problem was the solder iron, which I bought new but I think might be broken or otherwise defective. (Even at the highest temperature it would take roughly 10-15 seconds for the solder to start melting.) I bought a new one and am going to give it one more shot, if still no luck I would still so, so much appreciate your help! And would want to pay you at least something for it  I will DM you after I give it one more try, but thank you so much again for all the guidance!

Another inexpensive purchase I can recommend is some soldering-wick which can suck up excess solder. It really helped me after I did a bit of a bodge job on my first attempt - during which I became so frustrated with myself that I soldered one of the encoders on the wrong side of the PCB :upside_down_face:

Hey guys, i builted a norns shield a few weeks ago but i have the error : supercollider fail, i’ve searched here and on the monome website what could be the problem but can’t get it work. on maiden it says i’m not connected to sc and don’t understand why. when i restart it using matron it says ERROR (i2c/hp) failed to write, did somebody had the same problem here?

first check solder DAC and Crystal

Hi all, we are getting the error supercollider fail. Here is a picture of the solders, (we fixed ic DAC bridge in that photo). When we go to load scrips, it hangs on loading. We can connect to wifi though. 20201005_021133|225x500

Is the navigation of the menus (to connect to wifi, choose scripts, etc) a little slow and laggy? I’ve found when there is a supercollider fail and the menus are slow it is the crystal. The crystal looks put on a little crooked in your photo. Could use a little love :+1:

That error is normal and can be ignored on shield.

if you’re having SUPERCOLLIDER FAIL (after a couple reboots) you likely have a problem with your audio codec.

if you got a shield pcb from monome, the codec itself is almost certainly fine, so check and reheat your solders on the header that connects to the pi itself.

sure, sounds good. Na menus are not laggy at all. very snappy

Okay, super collider fixed (was a bad solder)

Now we are getting some nasty static through the headphones. I can hear “awake” playing in the background behind the static. How do we fix static haha

just another bad solder. PROBLEM FIXED

my god lets hope this is the final speed bump. E1 doesn’t seem to be working/showing up. We turn the knob and nothing happens, all the solders look fine, any ideas?

You see the trails that goes from encoder legs, go with them and reflow everything on the way, don’t believe your eyes just resolder (and use flux)

R29 there may need a bit more solder
Here is the whole path to check

Got a shield and a crow for a friend. What a wonderful build the shield kit is.

Have you ever considered making a workshop for the kits @tehn? A kit of sorts that someone could order to have a workshop? I wish I was better with the programming part, but I would love to help structure a kit/guide that one could use in a workshop setting.
