What about ./build.sh norns_raspberrypi3_defconfig script on the repo readme? Don’t i just need docker?

i tried building everything using that script and it worked, but there was a weird bug where when you turn the top encoder to view the params page it messes up the screen

That image is still a work in progress, a bunch of stuff isn’t done/working as it should, the main one you’ll quickly notice is that the filesystem is limited in size and there’s currently no way to expand it, so you’ll only have about 20MB of storage.
Like I said, easiest is to wait for an update of the current norns image.

I’m expecting some Cairo setting to be wrong, but haven’t really had time to dig in to find the cause.
It sometimes resets to being sharp if you load a different script.

How big a problem is this? (Really i have no idea)

So, i’m not super experimented with soldering but i don’t think i did a too terrible job for everything else (only left was the rPi header), but for some reason i had to desolder one the switches (it wasn’t perfectly ‘right’ / straight – sorry about the english–), and it was painful… Used the usual solder sucker, solder wick & flux, it took me forever & i still couldn’t move or get that switch out. (i also had a couple of extra switches…) but yeah…

it will be ok. that pad can float.

I found it hard to believe everything worked at first boot, or even that it booted at all. That i didn’t mess a couple more things.
'turns out there’s one issue, SW2 makes the rPi3b+ reset. :slight_smile:

Before I start taking a look later, any idea if there’re specific parts/areas I should start by / focus on? (Or any general suggestions/advice?) Do you think it could be caused by a bad soldering on one leg of this switch or there are more chances it might be a short somewhere on some headers’s pin?
For some reason I had more trouble soldering these switches than the headers/anything else. I didn’t see any obvious cause of short on the headers while soldering them (used a multimeter to test most of them, but wasn’t so sure about a few pins on the rPi header even tho the looked OK. One thing for sure, on the female oled headers I had around 4 soldered pins that didn’t look great: not a case of too much solder but on the contrary it looked definitely too light… (i’ll try to redo those).

… I could definitely use spacers between the display and shield! - even temporarily - i’m afraid my clumsy hands might rest/push on the display in a moment of inattention and the oled header seem quite frail :slight_smile:

did you do your own SMD soldering on this?

are your switches installed with the same orientation? (ie, text pointed the same way?)

This is not clear for me. Is there a way to access maiden with a DIY norns ?

No, didn’t do any SMD soldering, it’s a shield from Monome :slight_smile:

Yes, all the switches are oriented the same way, text on the left side.

Until the forthcoming update which adds WIFI support is available you’ll need to connect your DIY norns using a normal ethernet cable. Once connected via ethernet if you navigate to the WIFI menu on norns you should see that it already established a connection called Wired connection 1. Assuming you see that then you should be able to connect to maiden in your browser as outlined here:

You can also use a USB Wi-Fi stick if you have one (assuming it’s supported by the kernel) and don’t have an Ethernet cable.

I have got the ethernet cable but I don’t see any connection on the norns wifi window.
Edit: yep ! I tried to plug it directly in the wifi router instead of the mac and I have the IP!

SW2 fixed! I spent some time pushing buttons etc and it’s been working fine.
Norns is 100% alive!

(Tbh i mostly only stared at the traces, pins & solders. Used my multimetter for a while… being mostly perplexed. But i also cleaned anything that looked a bit suspicious, anything that could be some flux residue or something else, i suspected maybe something could short SW2 around the next Rs & cap or near the trace that goes to the GPIO header… — Really, no idea but i thought i’d begin by that.)

I tested one of the old TPLINK wifi dongles i have since the first gen rPis, hotspot mode works.
Midi works.
Now’s the time to play :slight_smile:

Woops, earlier i was a bit afraid i talked too soon. After one hour of pushing buttons and turning knobs, the problem is back. I can hear a sort of BZZZZ tone (?) when the rPi/Norns reboots. :confused:

Perhaps i could try to redo the push button solders? Weird.

I tried to desolder one of the pin/leg of SW2 using a solder sucker. Big ouch again. The corresponding pad was sucked in the process again. When looking at my pic above, it’s the bottom left pin/pad. I was going to attempt something before deciding i did enough damage tonight.

Tested replugging the Shield on my rPi3b+ … the switch/SW2/push button works like before. — ??
I don’t really get it. I think perhaps i lost a functionnality, like when holding the button, for a shorter or longer press perhaps? I’ll try to look at the schematics and see if i understand something.

Nah, all of this is handled in software. Strange that it still works with that bottom left pad lifted though!
