Saw this the other day and thought it looked pretty interesting…dual lowpass/highpass filter each with an overdrive. Can be used dual mono or linked stereo by the looks of it. Also can be purchased in a standalone pedal format which is cool and might open up some hacking possibilities?! Might be worth a look anyway

Yup saw that one but feel more drawn to the 3 sisters twinpeak things.

another thing to keep an eye on is diyre’s upcoming two-channel pre-amp/colour box that’ll be in a rack format, rather than their existing 500 format modules. might be more practical rather than shelling out for the 500 rack cases.

I’m really stoked about this as well. However, his shop is apparently, understandably, shut down and not shipping anything at the moment. Don’t know how much progress he will be able to make under these circumstances.

That sounds like them! thx

The pieces I have use a quarter-inch jack out so I would put that into a small amp.

I’m looking to build a small cheap-ish filter to get some more mileage out of my PO-33. I like the sound and the price of this Erica kit, and I have a Frequency Central power supply sitting unused… Is it likely that the PO-33’s line level output will need amplifying? Should I be looking elsewhere for a specifically line in filter?

This kit will deal with the level matching: https://aisynthesis.com/product/ai006-eurorack-stomp-box-adapter/

In that case I’ll need a busboard: and my cheapish filter idea begins to get not-so-cheap.
Do guitar pedals/stompboxes take line level in, then?

You’ll need a bus board or flying cable to power your filter module anyway. The cables are inexpensive, around $15.

I spoke to him about the progress and it’d obviously up in the air because of the current situation

Any great and small preamp recomendation with lots of gain and quality sound?
Thinking about an echoplex clone kit.

Also any idea what i could do with a vactrol an styroflex cap from an lpg build. Since i am getting out of eurorack and ant find a buyer i would really like to use those parts, maybe in the preamp?

Another question. Does someone know a diy kit for an envelope follower with shape control, that sends out the envelopes and runs on 9v?

@bradfromraleigh, your post prompted me to look into AML and I’m glad I did. This has been a great project with all this extra stay at home time. I went a little nuts and bought the CAPI rack kit and enough module kits to almost fill it up. Here’s what I’ve got done so far:

pairs of CAPI LC25s and JML LA500s are in the mail, and I’ve still got to build XLR TRS snakes to connect this to my patchbay.

Do you and @bradfromraleigh have an idea about the amount of clean gain you can get out of it? I have an SM7-B that’s super low output, so my RNP and even the pres on my MOTU are too noisy when I crank them. I’d love to pick up and build one of these if it’ll push a dynamic (especially if it can handle a ribbon)!

Here’s a picture of what I got when recording the ez1073 with max 65dB gain, input terminated by a Radial JDI direct box. This is probably the noise from the switching power supply of my rack. It is not audible at normal headphone listening volumes and does not visually change with different gain settings.
Real life test: I don’t have any low output mics, so I used a SM57. I’m just starting to hear hiss at +55dB with high headphone volume. This is from the mic though, as it’s the same result straight into the MixPre 10II which has very quiet pres. Well, the hiss sounds a lot prettier through the 1073, but it’s the same level.
So the ez1073 isn’t noisy, especially compared to my mics. I doubt it’d be the first choice in 500 series pres for clean gain though. Recordists these days usually choose a 73 type pre for the pleasant distortion it imparts.
edit: I should also mention that this pre clips very obviously when overdriven

I’ve tried an SM7b with mine with good results. My setup is not very elaborate.

ez1073 > Apollo Twin (no Unison plugin), gain usually at 55 or 60 on the 1073 and i might add another 10db at the interface.

I ran the ez1073 through the free REW software as well as a spectrum analyzer plugin to take a look at what it does to the signal (and to compare to the Unison 1073 plugin from UA). At extreme settings of 60-65, you begin to see a lot of harmonics as you would expect. Overall, very happy with it. I did end up getting the EQ add-on and they sit in a side-by-side rack now as a channel strip. In hindsight, I maybe should have bought the channel strip kit (?) but this is working nicely (with the help of a 10-pin ribbon extension cable).

This looks great! I’ve been looking into 3u racks - how was the CAPI build? Are you happy with it?

Also, out of curiosity, I think calibrating the ez1073 was the most head-scratching moment for me. With just one, I guess no big deal. But if I had a pair, I would want them to be reasonably closely calibrated. How did you go about that, if you don’t mind me asking?

(I ended up just setting it somewhere in the middle and moving on…)

The CAPI rack is excellent quality, and the price is unbeatable. It’s heavy, rock solid, and the tolerances are perfect. The only issue I had was those cursed self tapping panel mounting screws for the Neutrik XLRs. They take a lot of force but don’t hold the bit well, and I ended up rounding off a totally decent #1 Phillips driver. In the future I’ll use a driver with replaceable bits for these. Anyway, I’m very impressed with the quality of this rack and would not consider buying anything else.

To calibrate the ez1073s with a multimeter, I made a termination cable with two 300 ohm resistors as shown here: https://www.montagar.com/~patj/db_db.htm.

I’m jumping back into DIY this summer … just ordered a Nava kit (faithful 909 clone). Can’t wait to build it and start banging out some new techno

Also need to pull open the Serge for some more calibration … It’s a good time for it.
