I wouldn’t buy the 301 based on its ability to replicate another module. Rather think meta about it and then implement a certain concept in the 301, following it’s strengths and low hanging fruits. I think you’ll be much happier with it this way…

Well, I wasn’t thinking about it TO replicate the magneto, but if it covers some of that ground, it might make the decision easier. As I said, while looking more seriously at it, I was reminded of @scttcmpbll’s tape unit and it got me thinking is all. Appreciate all the insight.

with some patience you can emulate tape ‘flavour’ of delays with filters, add some noise and several delays into a path with some changes. It’s worth to look at Sloop custom unit for ER301. Basically it’s a looper but can be turned into dub-tape echo.
Magneto (which I like and use) is also tape delay emulator (with extra features) and not very close :slight_smile:

I think this really is my thought process on this, I’m already using an emulator to sort of lofi up some of my sounds. I do that in many other ways in my case too, so maybe, something that contributes more possibilities to my system makes more sense. I am still clinging to the idea of sticking with one case, so I’d need to free up a lot of room to put in the ER301… Magneto kind of room.

In terms of lo-fi’ing sound I like the combo of OTO BIM/BAM - they both very musical and kind of lo-fininstruments: with overdriving artefacts, filters, modulations and vibe.

I’m a bit late to the party but I’m loving my newly acquired ER-301. In search of some (more) physical control, I’m thinking of using the FH-2 I already own. I did some quick Googling on an i2c connection possibility between those two but it seems im out of luck, right?

@bobbcorr was asking around on MW a few years ago but that’s about it :frowning:

I was seeing these on Instagram. Really cool. What are you using to interface the arduino to crow? Are you passing the arduino signal to max and then crow?

Essentially, yeah. There’s an Arduino.amxd device as part of the Connection Kit, and it works kind of like the Max LFO. You can map each of the Uno’s analog inputs to anything in Live. So, I’ve got it mapped to the “remote” encoder of the Outs object. There’s probably a more elegant solution, but I was having too much fun to stop and think about it.

This is actually a pretty clever solution. Again, I was getting unnecessarily complex and thinking about i2c connections able to be made in Max. I’m only now jumping in to Max/MSP (I’ve moved away from Live to Bitwig, so being able to break some of these tools to Max are helpful). I’ve been exploring sequencing the TXo’s four voices using a midi to i2c conversion in Max. This is preparation for creating cool Max conversion toolkits for when I eventually have a 301 (as they speak similar language).

Very very cool implementation of the tool set! Looks like a whole heck of a lot of fun to play. As if you had a theremin chewing on a guitar sample.

Exactly! In fact, the (very basic) circuit is straight out of my little “getting started with Arduino” book, specially for a very basic theremin. But instead of routing the voltage to a piezo, it’s going to Max For Live. I have a little prototyping board from Adafruit, and I think I’m going to solder a little right together that’s a bit sturdier than the prototype.

The simplist answer is often the best. I do hope to have a greater understanding of the basics of Max by the time the 301 is up for sale again. There’s a lot of cool interaction that can be done between the crow i2c and monome tools. I’m especially curious about the DIY arc I’ve been building and translating it’s information to i2c. Having spent some time with the teletype, I’ve developed a thirst for i2c, but enjoy further control. There seems to be some audio mangling that the 301 can do that might be out of the scope of softcut on the norns, thus it seems cool to begin learning some of the tools to further take advantage of the communication methods between the 301 and crow via max.

Anyway, this is a long story to say that I’m looking forward to seeing any of your further explorations with the 301 and hope to be able to add some arrows to your quiver in the future!

Summary

I’m going to be adding a 301 to my i2c chain tomorrow but something is confusing me; is it true that the SLC and SDA pins are swapped on the 301 as opposed to the rest of the Monome family? How do folks deal with that when trying to add a 301 to a i2c chain?

I currently have all my modules via one continuous ribbon cable with 6pin female jacks to plug in to each module. What are some tricks for safely and securely getting the 301 on to that chain?

Okay, just read some documentation I had issues finding before. They’re all 1 to 1. I’m good.

Does that mean you don’t have to swap individual jumper cables around when adding the ER-301 to i2c?

The last time I tried to hook it up to my Crow and Ansible I did make sure they were in a different order and I couldn’t get it to work.

Anybody have some tips for routing to work with live buffers? I happened to score a ER-301 this week (insane) and get it installed. I’ve got some fun synth and effects tracks going and learning the general vibe of the product, but I was hoping to see some tricks for say, granulating or chopping live buffers. Any tips?
