isn’t very cheap, but the NONO Rover is nice

unfortunately I have the 48hp ‘low-cost’ case, but can’t be laid flat due to the power cable installed on the back (one can imagine the ensuing frustration, should’ve done more r’search—maybe my putting this here will save someone less dumb than me from reproducing The Mistake)

Don’t waste time on a cardboard case. It takes the same amount of time to make something out of crap materials as it does to make something out of decent materials. I use 1/4” plywood for my cheap and dirty cases, 1” lumber for my nicer cases.

Unless you don’t own a saw.

…I don’t. I’m particularly risk-averse toward anything that could irreversibly damage (my) distal limbs. I appreciate the sentiment, though … but might be “too far,” for me.

The added humor of your post is that you(?) are playing arco in your avatar. That’s just a little extra treat for us on an otherwise typical Tuesday. Thanks.

A handsaw is no more dangerous than the x-acto knife you’d need to make a cardboard case. I’d recommend this one:

Arco is the ultimate filter/wave folder.

Inclined to agree (wave-multiplier, etc. too) … certainly Xenakis thought so (especially for its non-linear dynamics, against the Fourier-chads of heterodyne’s elektronische musik past)

Hey y’all,

I got a platform output that has 3u rack space, but I’m not sure the width considering inches to hp (not at home right now). What do y’all use for rack rails on the desk (if you have one or can find out how wide those spaces are, I’ll measure this evening)

Thank you!

For a 19” rack? Use regular 84hp rails with rack ears. I 3D print my ears in plastic; you can buy metal ones.

Awesome thank you! I know it seems really basic but that helps.

You could probably get the tip-top HEK as well.

How do you like the desk? I’m tempted by it.

Hey, does anyone here have both an Intellijel Palette case and a powered 4ms Pod case? Is the Palette power input socket the same size (2.1 mm) as in the Pod? They both seem to want 15 V center positive.

I’m asking because I’d like to power both with the same brick and a daisy chain barrel plug cable.

New guy question… Please be gentle (though it seems like that part of the request is unnecessary here).

For first steps into modular, the Nifty Case from Cre8audio seems like a good place to start - powered 3ms 84 hp rack with built in midi and audio.

Any initial opinions or impressions? I know it is super new but I half think “great economical start” and half think “untested gimmick… Go with a trusted name”. Any thoughts either way are appreciated.

Welcome! I don’t have personal experience with the Nifty Case but the perfect circuit video did seem intriguing—especially the bundle seems like a really good deal and an interesting small hp sequencer! When I started I didn’t care about midi or audio outputs (had a bastl dude mixer that did just fine) so I would probably not have invested in this, but if those are valuable to you or if those modules appeal to you it seems well powered enough for 84hp. The couple of reviews I’ve seen sound pretty good too, but again personally I would only get this if I was going to use the midi and the bundled modules.

i started with a cardboard case tip top rails and uzeus which came out to $125 (plus a cardboard box, of course) just to start pairing things with an 0-coast. This, I think, was good for me because it gave me an affordable bit of real estate to figure out what exactly I wanted to do with modular and how I’d like to proceed. Then I didn’t feel bad investing a bit more in something a bit bigger and more rugged once I knew sort of what I could handle and what a good size would be for what i wanted to do. Just my experience, in case it’s helpful.

Obligatory VCV rack, semi-modular recommendations for starting out!

Thank you for the second opinion and the welcome.

And yes, though I am a newbie to having a modular, I am certainly not a stranger to the underlying ideas (VCV, other in the box modulars, hardware routing, Supercollider and music programming - l found my way here thanks to Orca)

I do exactly this with a powered pod and a Pallette. Works perfectly.

Excellent, thank you very much!

Anyone, by chance, using an FH-2 with their Intellijel Palette? Is it in-squeezable?

Any Doepfer portable case users here? Looking at swapping my Intellijel 4u for the 6u 84hp, but the weight of the Doepfer is making me hesitate. Can I swap the PSU for a lighter one?
