My bad M2.5 I’ll edit my prev post.

I do the M2.5 via Pulp Logic rails (I run the 4ux19" aka 3+1 frames).

I only have a Structure 96, which may be M3 or maybe I have been forcing M3 screws into it

Oh nice, I wish they hadn’t discontinued that case it seems a useful size. Glad the M3 screws fit for you, they don’t for my Structures 208.

Hey @Noisetrees - just popping in to say that I tried the K&M Heli 2 acoustic guitar stand you mentioned a long ways back in this thread and it’s just perfect for my needs.

I’d recently transferred my modular system from a RackBrute 6U to a Mantis case, but immediately missed the elevated position the RackBrute had with its unique stand. Now that I have some clearance underneath my rack again, I can have a more natural position for the KeyStep Pro and the many cables exiting its back.

Sweet!

Good to hear you’re happy! I have three of them, two for modular cases and one for a Tascam 424. I have used them at live gigs too, as they pack flat and are of great build quality for the price. They also don’t take up too much space in depth, which is nice.

I wanna chime in this thread and say that the ‘Simple Skiffs’ from Tall Dog that Control just started selling are simply amazing. I sold my Intellijel 4u 104hp skiff to fund this 6u 62hp setup below and I’m incredibly happy with my decision.

The intellijel was really good quality, but I think value-for-money these cases are going to be the best bet for a lot of people. Shrouded power headers, variable wattage and price depending on the transformer you get (which uses a very solid DIN connector), expandability, very solid and heavy metal build, with a matte black finish, and so on.

My only complaint is that the rails use M2.5 holes, so I had to order silver knurlies.

This looks gorgeous. Are these two cases attached together, or is there a 6U option that I’m just not seeing??

I believe they attach together so you can stack multiple.

super good to see this

how portable would you say one 3U is? would you feel good traveling with it in a carry-on book/messenger/duffle bag?

I’m excited to see this, I think there’s a dearth of case options in that sweet spot of 62-ish hp.

Is only one of these the powered version?

I actually misspoke - These are 64hp! Personally I think that’s better and more workable.

Yeah - You get a 16-16pin cable that slots in between the cases when you join them together! The orange cable in my post above is just the bridge to link Mixup to Outs.

I think it’d be doable, but do keep in mind that the cases themselves are quite heavy! As long as you don’t mind a little weight and don’t have your skiff patched, I think you’d be good.

It’s like @Whatwetalkabout said - You can buy a small kit that has joiners for the sides and rear:

Oh, that is very clever. Does it feel fairly sturdy when connected? (Like, can you pick it up from just one of the cases without the other one sliding out?)

The possibilities here for a meta-modular synthesizer are incredibly alluring.

Thanks for the intel!

Oh, absolutely. They’re fastened together with flush hex-head screws- Once they’re tightened there’s no give whatsoever. Allen keys were also provided with the add-on kits for vertical standing and for joining the cases, and it wouldn’t be difficult to separate them.

As a test I did actually just lift the system (and with one hand!) from just the top option. Apart from the weight being awkward it was all good.

I really do think that these cases are gonna take off, and I hope they do; I used to work at the print shop where Dan, who runs Tall Dog, got his materials made and I recall him very enthusiastically mentioning a project like this to help beginners have something scalable and affordable to start with. Had these been out at the top of the year when I got into euro, it would have been an easy choice between the unpowered Moog cases and the non-expandable Make Noise skiff.

Dang, I didn’t want to juggle cases so quickly into my modular journey, but swapping out my 2x84HP for a little 64HP skiff and an extensible 104HP row is pretty tempting. This could be a great alternative to the “buy a big case so you don’t outgrow it” bromide.

Mm, I will say that I don’t think the different case widths are compatible! At least not currently.
Unless you meant as two different cases! In which case, so far as I know that’d work great.

Oh, yeah, that’s exactly what I meant:

  • 64HP skiff w/ smaller power supply for portable/social jamming (or a small face-up control rack)
  • 104HP row w/ beefy power supply for home, with ability to expand to another/more row(s)

Just wanted to hop on the thank you train about that guitar stand recommendation, my 2x104 case fits perfectly. Can’t wait to patch neck pain-free

Is it the acoustic or electric guitar version of the stand? What’s the maximum depth?

Yep, this one exactly: https://www.k-m.de/en/products/stands-and-accessories-for-instruments/fretted-instruments/17580-a-guitar-stand-heli-2-cork?number=17580-014-95 The base the case rests on is 15 cm but it’s probably best if your case is less than this so it can lean comfortably on the back and not risk falling towards you (unless you strap it at the back somehow). My case is about 7/8 cm deep, so it’s very stable as is.
