Totally helps a bunch! Thanks so much, super clear explanation of what I imagine is happening, particularly since you can’t really adjust the attack of envelopes from Pams.

This may be a cop out answer but have you considered Filter 8? I would say it has a pretty similar Roland-esque tone to Polaris but you also get 8 simultaneous outputs. It also has a lot more useful functionality beyond being a filter.
I’ve heard very good things about the Doepfer filter though. Some people swear by it.
But filter tones are so, so subjective and you should go with whatever you like the sound of best

I’ve looked at it before but it isn’t quite what I’m looking for. It has 8 outputs, but only 8 filter types, whereas the A-106-6 has 16 and Polaris has 27. I’m looking for a LOT of filter shapes, and I’m particularly interested in the bandpass and allpass variations that those two have to offer.

I have the Polaris. To me it’s a filter that can really sculpt a sound, precisely cut frequencies exactly where I want. The drive adds some really nice subtle grittiness and makes the resonance sing. I haven’t been bothered by the set-and-forget nature of the filter modes/types as they’ve been just that, set-and-forget. Having dual FM inputs is a nice thing too. It also responds nicely to trig pinging.

It doesn’t really have its own distinct sound and character but it’s more a tool for culprits sound.

What exactly would you like to know about it?

That’s what I ended up doing, no regrets. Similarly, I went with a 90% Make Noise System. I went through most of the regulars: MI, Intellijel, etc. All great stuff, but MN really spoke to me and I made a single cohesive system that has yielded years of fun.

I look at it almost like a good Serge system - two Serge panels is a playground of fun, that’s all you need. That’s how I feel about my MN rack.

I’m just wondering what people think of the sound of the two filters, and especially how they like the sound of the 106-6 given how few examples there are of it. The Polaris is probably the better option. More filter types and I know it sounds great. I just really love the interface of the Doepfer one.

I haven’t used the Doepfer one so can’t compare to it.

Maybe my favorite sound out of the Polaris was telharmonic noise to optomix to one of the band pass types of Polaris with high resonance and some drive, to subtle Polymoon delay, heard in the latter half of Fives

Went into almost piano like singing mallet territory.

More good info! I can’t put into words how I felt when I first saw the 0-Coast. I felt it all over again when I got my Echophon earlier this month. I love the philosophy and thoughtful layout of their modules.

I think I may start inching towards a shared system, but I’ll try to take it slow!

XI am just about to complete some kind of a mixed Shared System. Magneto instead of Echophon, Rings and Clouds and Intelijell Mix Up.
I use an external reverb ( Eventide Space) instead of Erbe Verb. I don’t have Pressure Points.
The 0 Coast is never far away, as an external sound source/functions to the system. I really enjoy the system as it is and Rings brings in some interesting colors. Not very sure about keeping Clouds in though…

Ho guys, I just bought a Rings and would like to make sounds like Ann Annie. How does he do that? Any suggestions?

Paging @annannie

(With additional characters for compliance)

Have you tried pausing any of his videos and setting yours rings the same way as his? And then try to figure out the kind of modulation you like from that:)

I’m not sure how much of a difference it makes, but I know they almost always route Rings into Optomix!

The thing I learned from watching their videos is, structure and position 100% ccw to get “tuneful” sounds.

They vary the settings from time to time, but you’ll want to be in red/red modes with brightness nearly full ccw and structure something similar. You can get more variance and what I think is a more organic sounding version of this particular rings sound by running pink noise through a vca (with a snappy envelope) into rings. Bonus for running the pink noise through a filter first, though you may want a vca like veils so you can increase the gain a bit on the filtered noise when necessary.

What the best way of determining the max mA output of a power supply? I’m trying to sell a case that I don’t know the specs for and I need a way to figure it out!

No better method than finding the datasheet for the power supply / regulators. Achieving their rated power will depend on adequate heat dissipation though.

I’d like to get into modular with a small system, I have some rails and can built a 3-row 42HP case that fits where I need it to fit. I also have 3 modules already (Perhaps not ideal, but so be it): Pressure Points, Filter 8 & Warps, as well as a Neutron.

I’d like to do a fair bit of external processing from a variety of sources (Tapedecks, radios, other synths through patchbays) and have some external effects, so not looking to add those to the modular at this time. I’d like to then re-sample these for use in samplers or sequence it through MIDI.

I’ve made a little set-up based on my current knowledge, but would love to hear what’s ‘wrong’ with it as I’m sure something is. Would anyone mind taking a look and see what doesn’t make sense, or suggest changes? The Morphagene seems to do a lot that I’m after, so I’ve tried to build it around that. Perhaps having stages + maths is a bit much?

I’d personally lose maths and add tides ii plus a multiple and attenuator/attenuverter eg shades or even passive for clouds plus a noise/s+h - it should just fit! I’d use warps parasites fm and use a fw for stages that allowed easy use of the harmonic oscillator.
Otherwise it’s nice - you can mix with veils, you have a complex/tzfm oscillator with warps plus processing. Ideally you need a buffered mult (or I’d want one), clouds eats modulation but needs attenuation.
For similar reasons I made a triple buffered mult (12 jacks) in 4hp and a 4hp triple s+h as diy…

I dont think warps and stages is too much! They’re both really versatile. Warps with parasites has a great delay as well… you can use it in interesting ways - eg not too many people use the tzfm on it! Stages as a harmonic oscillator is great!

Thanks for taking the time to reply! I’ll look into that, didn’t know there was a custom firmware for those, will look into that too. I meant to say Stages + Maths being too much, not Stages + Warps, my bad! I’ve edited the previous post.

Adding a buffered mult sounds like a solid plan, perhaps I can DIY something built into the case so it doesn’t take up any HP.
