I’m not entirely sure what the output of my PSU is, it’s an older Monorocket case and supply I got used. I’m sure that I’m pushing the envelope on whatever the max output is (obviously).

It seems like after pulling the Mannequins stuff (1304mA w/ Mangrove and 3Sis), and replacing them with Braids (1161mA) the problem seems to go away. When I swap Braids with Mangrove, but leave 3 Sisters out (1204 mA) it still power cycles after a little bit. I’ll do some more experimenting in a couple of days.

i had the reverse - adding mangroves tipped my system over a threshold (~1200ma on a distro rates for 1500ma) and after running for a bit a noticeable background noise was introduced.

i removed the main power hog module (eventide ddl) and the problem hasn’t returned.

There’s also this NDLR gizmo. It’s not a module—it’s MIDI, so you’d have to do MIDI-to-CV to integrate with the modular, but it’s an interesting concept:

but wait let me get these two old lil midi synths…

Looking for suggestions for a sampler module. Have started playing live more, and looking to make things a bit more involved and visual.

Looking for something I can plug a mic directly into, sample something (percussion, voice, random noises) then tweak/mangle within the module, or send elsewhere in the rack.

Anyone done anything similar? Thanks

Just recounting an interesting moment with my modular. I got a Qpas, which meant I had to make room, so I took everything out of the case. As I have just in the past 6 months been assembling the thing, it was organized hodge-podge. I sort of deliberately tried to place everything back in a new location and refresh/change how I have been using the modules.
To that end I:

  • Moved modules I wasn’t using a lot towards the center, so I would see them more
  • Moved my 1U digiverb away from the final out module, thinking it would be good to incorporate it early in a patch
  • Using the Returns on Rosie as stereo ins
  • Configured Stages to ouroboros mode, so that it is now a harmonic oscillator. (Now I need another Stages…)
    Lots of other little things.

A few days in, it is definitely changing the way I approach. Strangely, more minimal pages, instead of trying to get every module involved every time.

Since it is a question thread, has anyone rearranged things to discover new possibilities? Any good (or bad) surprises from doing so?

Absolutely! From time to time, I move things around my (largish) rack, and every time I do so, my patching habits change. I also have a smaller portable rack that I will sometimes shove a few modules in, take it somewhere else, and force myself to work with it. Both techniques help me better learn particular modules, and the “surprises” that fall out are usually happy ones.

Of course, now I am questioning my actual cabling strategies, so that I can get to the freshly laid out system…

Has anyone here used the Konstant Lab BoardPWR PSU? I’m thinking of getting it for a small case I’m building since it’s really small and the two IDC headers would be great for attaching a flying bus cable and a Pulp Logic tile power adapter.

The other PSU I’m considering is the Intellijel TPS30W Mini which is a better price but I’d have to expand it with a flying bus since I’ll likely have more than 9 modules + the Pulp Logic adapter.

I have one, I think it’s great. Easy to install, a fairly low profile, reasonable price and plenty of headroom. No complaints here.

I’ve been playing around with a Serge system this week and loving the touch keyboard sequencer; finding a ton of uses for it, even with the drone stuff I’m working on. I’d like something comparable for my small Eurorack case (4u 104hp). Any recommendations? CV control over seq. length, direction, random step etc. Some kind of touch control like the Serge sequencer would also be really nice. Rene is the obvious choice but it’s large, and I’m not sure about dedicating that much space to something I wouldn’t use in every patch. Then again, I’m willing to be convinced otherwise!

This may be the closest thing in Euro at the moment, though it is even larger than Rene and would of course take the majority of your 104 hp case: https://www.analogueresearch.com/product-page/serge-tkb I think any controller module will end up being pretty large, have you considered an external controller, or using a separate skiff for the controller, for example a Rene in a 4ms Pod?

I think I read or heard that there will be a self contained/powered euro version from Random Source at some point.

ignoring cost id say “why not a René in a 4ms pod” but Rene is 34hp and pods are either 32 or 60hp

that’s the problem, otherwise I would just go for that, I reckon. tbh i’m thinking an SQ-1 could do 90% of what I want so…

tbh i feel dumb for not rec’ing the SQ-1

i feel dumb for not thinking of it sooner  seems like with modular i apply the max/msp habit of over-engineering every solution

An SQ-1 can do 80% of a Rene for 20% of the cost. Everyone with a eurorack setup should have one!

There is a 40 HP pod but I agree that it’s not a cost effective solution: https://www.ctrl-mod.com/products/pod40x-powered

the SQ-1 doesn’t offer any external CV control inputs, though, right? I thought it only had a clock input. I think the most interesting aspects of both the TKB and Rene are the potential for external input besides a one-dimensional clock, so I think it comes down to what matters to you (size vs cost vs external control).

it might be obvious, but Pressure Points/Brains also has a lot of overlap with the TKB.

I haven’t gotten to use it yet, but I just got a Xaoc Tirana. only 4 steps, but chainable, with CV control over direction/reset and some other unique features.
