Is there anything besides Mordax Data that has a tuner that shows measured frequency in hertz rather than just notes in the chromatic scale? It doesn’t even have to be a module, and actually, I’d prefer using something inexpensive and compact that can exist outside of the rack. I have a chromatic tuner built into my Zoom H6 that I can use for tuning to a specific note. I’m not interested in using any DAW-based tuners since I don’t record straight into my computer, and typically only use my laptop and DAWs for final editing / mixing / mastering and making artwork before uploading stuff. I’m just looking for something that can do it so I can dial in specific frequencies or mess around with intervallic and mathematically-based tunings.

Not quite on point, but the Z3000 VCO has a readout in hz. And is a great-sounding vco.

There’s a bunch, I’ve always used n-track and never had a problem with it or with being out of tune. That said, I use it for acoustic instruments only.

Wondering if any fellow Arbhar owners have run into issues with digital noise (almost sounds like clock whine; it’s semi-rhythmic in nature). Was talking with a friend this morning who mentioned the exact same noise coming from her unit. I‘ll record a super specific example this morning and post it.

If you’ve dealt with this successfully, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I had a bunch of noise issues a while back.
Is it like a kind of whining sound?

I moved my Arbhar from my big case with all my modules and put it in a smaller case by itself and I think the noise stopped.

However, I’m still concerned and I’d love to hear a recording of your noise to see if it’s similar.

If you have an easy way to move it into another case and test if the noise stops, it could be another module that’s interfering somehow.

Let me know how you get on.

That’s exactly right- a whining sound. I’m actually on my second case with this unit (the first being a palette). Both with integrated Intellijel power supplies. The issues persisted through both cases.

They recently fixed some noise issues with a new firmware - are you on the latest (although it doesn’t quite sound related).

Hey y’all,

Been thinking of building a new system and trying to go for something relatively small and coherent.

Here’s one idea based on MN tape and microsound music machine. I already have Maths, PNW, and QPAS. I don’t have much experience with Morphagene but I like the concept of the TMMM System. Any thoughts from those of y’all familiar with that system and modules for this build? Thanks!

I have a Morphagene-focused system. You can do a lot with this! You can do a lot of processing of the sound into and out of Morphagene. Few observations:

  1. Depending on what you plan to input into Morphagene you may not need the input module (e.g. if I hookup my phone to it I don’t normally need to boost it at all). The auto leveling function is ‘fine’ (not as nice as phonogene but…). If I was bringing in guitar or something that needed a lot of boosting I would look at something like befaco instrument interface etc.

  2. Your output module is mono but Morphagene, QPAS, Monsoon all have stereo outputs. If you need an output module then Befaco Out V3 is 4hp, or the Joranalogue Transmit 2 or WMD output might be worth investigating.

  3. PNW is a very handy module since you can attenuate the outputs, which you’ll need for modulating Monsoon. From what I remember it only has stepped random outputs though? You could always look for a wee random module at some point later; I like stepped random into Morphagene’s gene input and smoother random into the slide input. Attenuated noise is also nice for monsoon (e.g. zlob entropy) which you could attenuate with maths.

Looks fun! Morphagene is nice. I like it a lot more when it is the main sound producing thing in a system, I’ve not found it nearly as likable treating it as an end of chain FX, etc.

Guess I am curious why you don’t just round out the TMMM system? PNW would slot nicely in the remaining HP. I think you’ll be glad to have the woggle randomness and Mimeophon > Monsoon (for this system IMO). I mean, you’ve already got the bulk of it, why not just go all the way? Disclaimer - I do not work for Make Noise :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

thanks for the feedback! Good to know about the auto level being adequate. I wasn’t sure about that and heard mixed things online. The pico output is stereo (I have it already). Really appreciate the ideas for PNW too! cheers

true rounding it out would be nice and I like the uniformity of one brand. I actually have the MN skiff housing modules that mostly complement a 0coast and swapping out stuff to try, so I’m pretty close. I had a thought of slimming down the rack idea more to fit in a 60hp case or a lunchbox to take around and do some processing of recordings in the field.

That’s VERY interesting.
My main case is an Intellijel case too.

But I haven’t had time to take out the other modules one by one and see if another module is causing the issue. But it did seem to improve when I moved it to my tip top rails (uZeus power)

Can you report back regarding the firmware? I’d love to find out what’s going on here, as I have suspicious feelings the problem may return when I pick up a second intellijel case to expand and move it back over.

Nice article on the use of VCAs. It goes over common and not-so-common (for me at least) uses.

I used to have a Quad VCA and swapped it for an Optomix. It simplified things for me, making the creation of melodies more immediate. But I was bearly using (if not-at-all) VCAs to modulate CV.
Which double VCA modules do you recommend? I was going to pick a uVCA but now I’m tempted to go with a Moddemix instead. I’ve heard it adds some distortion to audio signals. Is it character or is it noise? Even though I plan to use it mainly for CV, I’d like to be able to use it for audio signals (and use the built-in VCA in Mangrove more freely for sound sculpting).

For modulating CV signals, it’s hard to beat Happy Nerding’s 3x VCA. 3 channels, 6hp, initial gain and bipolar modulation attenuation for each VCA and switchable cascaded mixing. It’s very clean for audio use though–won’t add any character there.

Befaco’s A*B+C is also super useful for CV, and sounds great as a ring mod for audio signals.
