A slight mystery. As many others I have a Silhouette incoming. How to make room for it?
Here is my Mannequins/i2c rack.

I can probably offload brass somewhere else. Maybe also Please Exist? Any other obvious ways to rearrange?

What to lose is a personal valuation, depending on usage, but it would be neat with an outside eye which might inform some ideas.

I get that trimmer pots are small, affordable, not bound to single manufacturers, easy to implement in design, replaceble, and also kind of cute¹… but I am not super excited about them I have to say. Some of my ten slip in an unsatisfying way.

Maybe should, haptics matter! They would still slip – this is about something about the friction or lubrication inside the knob.

On an unrelated note, filter self-oscillation is somehow more counterintuitive=fun than I expected when hesitating if I should get a filter at all. Normal rules don’t apply: gain affects pitch, resonance is gain but not always , LP/HP mix is somehow upside down, and some underwater animals have taken over.

I think ending up with more filters than oscillators is a rite of passage for anyone into synths, they feel more alive IMO

I have a patch idea I’m trying to figure out how to make work.

The idea is to use maths as a comparator being fed a signal from vco #1 and whenever that signal goes silent fire off a gate to open a vca, letting through the signal from vco #2. And then when vco #1 goes above a given threshold close the vca and mute vco #2.

Are you with me?

So far I have tried the comparator patch from the maths manual, while also utilizing ch 4 to get the inverted gate from ch 1 eor, but it doesn’t behave the way I expected it to: There is no gate coming out of ch 4 when vco #1 goes silent.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

I just did a patch like this, but with Compare 2. Maths does lots of things. Unfortunately many of those things are only done mediocre.

Hah! I just figured out the, hands down, simplest workaround ever.
If I patch the signal from vco #1 straight into maths ch 4 and set the fall time to somewhere around 11-12 o’clock it works quite well and I get a steady gate when the input signal is off.

The switch between the two signals is of course not instantaneous, but it’s good enough for my purposes.

Maths is awesome.

Looking for some suggestions or inspiration right now. This is my current set up and I’m looking for a clean but interesting digital oscillator and another effects or granular option. For the oscillator I would love something capable of producing pretty glassy tones. Clean but also flexible. For the effects/granular module, something that degrades and destroys sound in a beautiful way. Any suggestions?

“Glassy” sounds from oscillators often points to FM. You might investigate the RYK Algo. For effects, beautiful degradation is a bit of a subjective thing, but the QuBit Data Bender might be relevant. Mylarmelodies, Unperson, and Cinematic Laboratory all have Algo videos. Unperson has a lot of great videos on the Data Bender that cover a lot of its range.

The first oscillator I think when I hear “glassy” is Xaoc Devices Odessa.

I would say that Pladask Elektrisk Dradd degrades and destroys beautifully, but it only does so in mono. That’s why I splurged and bought 2. Beads also degrades wonderfully with the orange and red quality settings.

OK the RYK Algo is a great suggestion. Looking into it now. I have a Hertz Donut on a shelf and it’s too harsh for me right now. I’m also eyeballing the Xaoc Odessa but the size and price is holding me back. I owned a Data Bender before and I got a little frustrated with it because I can easily recreate effects like that using plugins. I’m looking for something more uniquely modular.
