I didn’t need the extra gain yet, so I can’t help you.

on modular grid under module search there’s a “function” dropdown menu. It’s just words with no descriptions, but you can google from there anything that looks unfamiliar and see if you might need it.

Some are obviously vague like “utility” (but then every major utility function I’m aware of is also listed, separate from that broad category). I know it’s not quite an encyclopedia, but it is a “reasonably comprehensive list.”

A separate kind of concern might be ‘varieties of synthesis’ or ‘conceivable shapes of envelopes with every possible knob response’ which is a different question altogether.

I’ve found Michael Hetrick’s dissertation, Modular Understanding : A Taxonomy and Toolkit for Designing Modularity in Audio Software and Hardware reasonably comprehensive. It provides a taxonomy for discussing modular functionality with plenty of examples.

So, the MN Strega announcement has gotten me thinking about dirty/character delays. What are people’s favorite dirty/crunchy/noisy Euro delays? I used to own the Lyra-8 and loved the delay on that thing, so the Lyra-8FX seems like a safe bet. I’ve always heard good things about the NLC Delay No More but have never owned one (and now there’s the Delay No More 3 which seems even wilder). Any other favorites out there?

Echophon is great and the looping function is super fun!

I use NLC’s dispersion delay and delay no more 3 (both pt2399 based) and mungo d0. I mention d0 because, depending on what you put in the feedback loop, say a lovely gritty filter such as Belgrad, it can be as dirty as you like.

Both NLCs are triple channel so they are good for stereo effects, feedback stacking and so on. They’re large and currently I rack only one at a time. I finished an album recently that was a kind of textural indulgence in the pt2399 chip, by way of how it’s used in these NLCs. As much as anyone else I love how it sounds when the chip is right on the edge of breaking, and the feedback goes all snap, crackle and pop.

As pure delay it is vey limited for sure, but I really like Field Kit FX with it’s combo of bitcrush, dirty delay, spring reberb and tone eq.

Is this album available for listening anywhere?

It seems that Wowa Cwejman passed away yesterday.

Sound of Shadows by Flight of Harmony is a classic
noisy PT2399 delay in euro. Gnarly bugger, with extras and quirks. Cheap too.

I have a private streaming link as I’ve been demoing a couple of labels. This is largely at the encouragement of the fellow who mastered it, for I’ve lately felt quite alienated from the scene as far as putting material out, seeking recognition and working with labels etc. are concerned. It’s begun to feel more removed to me than ever from the musical process. But that’s just what somebody without much recent demo luck would say! I guess I’ll push it a little longer and see. In the meantime I’m happy to PM the link if you like.

Sad to hear about Cwejman.

I would also check out the Bizarre Jezabel Athra. It is beautiful in sound and appearance, and is an insane deal at $150. It will take a bit to arrive from Russia though…Bizarre I Jezabel Athra 2020 black/gold Stereo Delay with | Reverb

Good point on feedback - there are lots of ways to make a clean delay dirty if the feedback path is open. I do really like the strange crunchiness of the pt2399 chip though.

I’m curious if you’ve tried the original Delay No More? It seems like the attenuators for cross-feedback would be useful. Also, what does the 4th row of knobs on the Delay No More 3 do? I’m not seeing any wet/dry knob on there so I was wondering they was related to wet/dry control but named differently.

A couple other modules that do more than just the basics w/ the PT2399:

Anyone with an FX Aid XL having a nightmare of a time flashing firmware? I’ve done this before with MI instruments but I can’t get this to work for the life of me. I’ve tried the direct out and the headphone out from my audio interface, and even if I lower the signal it errors out at seemingly random times during the flash. I’ve tried higher levels, lower levels… at some point I get so low that it errors right away, so I start bringing it up and then it errors again. I’ve checked for 2V pp like five times and I still get the error when flashing. Anyone run into this?

edit: I’ve also tried re-creating the firmware file.

sample rate might be something to look at

What I have been doing is running wet delay signal, in my case a 4ms DLD, into a filter such as Ripples, then I send a noise source or random into the fm input, it pretty much destroys any clean signal you have. The combo of low pass or band pass filtering plus the fm noise really works for me.

It looks like the files are created at 48 kHz, which jives with my audio interface / system settings. No luck there. :frowning:

I’ve had no trouble updating the FX AID from the headphone jack of my laptop. Volume set to about 70%.
