Agreed - I also have a Pam’s. It gets used in every patch, absolutely. Incredibly versatile.

I love my teletype, but this level of insanity/control is beyond me for sure. I’m eager to get to this point, but dang if it is not extremely tough to get my sea legs.

I have a Teletype also and agree with all the points you bring up. I’m not sure I would recommend it before a Pams though especially for someone two months into getting into Eurorack.

Fair enough! For the first year and a half or more with modular I was mostly using MIDI sequencing. When I got into Teletype it was after I’d tried out Pam’s, Stoichea, Circuit Abbey G8 etc. Also I’m a software developer and feel like the complex stuff is just an assembly of smaller simple steps, and I like working with complex and odd rhythmic relationships even when the result is slow or sparse.

Also I think if I were doing modular techno I’d be more likely to lean toward Pam’s plus things like Euclidean Circles, Grids etc.

Yeah, I get Both those points. You can continue to just add more bits of code for more necessary tools, and with time, these become second nature.

I have a OP-Z, crow and O_c with the hemispheres firmware to generate more techno, traditional or punchier sequences, and find the Teletype to be more of a chord machine (thanks to the JF stuff) a semi random sequencer, a Swiss Army knife of a function generator/LFO machine and sound shaper, thanks to the sequencing abilities. It’s wonderful to have a couple of fluctuating CV and Trigger parameters across multiple scenes and just suddenly and softly swap to new sound structures while playing a sequence from somewhere else.

Also check out Make Noise Tempi. Pam’s is good if you don’t mind menu diving, but Tempi is better IMO if you want something immediate and performative. I borrowed a Pam’s from someone for a week or two and I just didn’t jive with the workflow after being used to Tempi.

I dislike the Tempi key combos for configuration, but once you have it setup, it’s great. Having 6 clocks that can either be in relationship (or not) is useful.

Pam’s is explicitly not designed for live use and can do much more than Tempi. I’ve also personally found them to have sync issues when used in combination.

Also the start / stop button on Pam’s is nice.

Tempi is a cool module, but I think everyone should try Pam’s because of how much versatility it offers.

True, but I pretty much only use my modular in a live/improvised setting. Even if I’m just at home playing, I like things to be as immediate as possible. Pam’s felt like it disturbed my worklfow a bit. I really wanted to like Pam’s, because it does offer a lot more functionality. Maybe I’ll try it again one day and like it more.

one more question for y’all for now…

as i said earlier, i’m starting small and building slow - here’s what i’ll be starting with, clearly inspired by the crow introduction video.

note that the second rip is just there 'cause i’m making two, it’ll hang out in the case until i have a use for it.

my question is - what lengths of cables should i get to start? i was thinking 3-4 10cm cables and 3-4 15cm cables to start. should i get longer ones at first?

I have a 62HP case (Palette), 30cm cables are the ones I use the most, by far. 15cm cables are good for close connections, too. 10cm might be a bit too short.

Has anyone here get themself an Intellijel Tete? Thinking about picking it up to expand on my René.
Also maybe someone has any thoughts about using Planar as a sequencer?

re:Planar, do you mean quantizing the XY values? It works and loops the recordings with Planar2, but it can’t be clocked or reset. Obviously there’s a spacial continuity because it’s a joystick, so you can’t jump around except for the loop point. Depending on how you clock the quantizer you could use the gate out which could be interesting, but I didn’t try that. Regardless, the joystick feels nice to use!

Jumping on the Pam’s conversation. One thing it offers (via expanders) that is super useful in my setup is midi clock output. I use it along with CV Tools and an ES-3 to get (almost) latency-free sync between Ableton and all of my midi gear with no jitter. It’s really solved a big problem for me so I can deal with a bit of menu diving. Personally I don’t find the LFO’s or envelopes that useful because of their resolution (I get zippering when used with VCAs) but the random voltages get used a lot (along with clocks obviously).

Got the Tete the other day. It’s a super powerful addition to Tetrapad. It looks like there will be a bit of a learning curve, but I accomplished some really complicated animated modulation and control patching without cracking the extensive manual. I’m pretty sure that it will be an extremely useful live performance tool.

Is there any real alternative for Pam for… say… half the price? Except 2nd hand Pam of course. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

You could maybe find a cheap Ornament&Crime or TempsUtil which can do many things that Pam’s can do and some things it can’t, if in a very different way? I dunno, they’re definitely different beasts, but those are the only things that come to mind. :thinking:

Though honestly, if you think Pam’s is too expensive, Eurorack is maybe not the format for you? Most every module is pretty expensive outside of DIY.

I’ve got Ornament&Crime (micro 8HP version) but the areas covered by the O&C and Pam are rather different AFAIK.

The Hemisphere firmware has a number of other things that regular O_C can’t do. And again, alternatively, TempsUtil is more clock focused.
