MIA’s are incredibly versatile. I reach for it often. Highly recommend, if it fits your primary use-case.

Bastl ABC probably worth a look. You can normalize left to right inputs via jumpers on the back, too, for easy mono to stereo action, or treat each side separately.

Then there’s the Knob.farm Hyrlo that’s just 4hp so you can have 2hp for something else.

3xMIA can be difficult to zero out if you’re planning to use it for audio. Great for CV and offsets though. For audio I use Happy Nerding’s 6xMIX.

Do you have one? I’m about to order one…

Ah, thanks for this call out. I totally would have grabbed the tool that is not quite ideal for the job.

Thanks for the Hyrlo & Bastl suggestions as well folks.

I do yes. I ordered their trio a while ago. Happy with them so far

Then you might want to have a look at 6x MIX instead of 3x MIA.

I have a Hyrlo and an Ooots, and I like both. I’m still tempted by a Befaco STMIX though.

Hi ! I apologize for the newbie question, I imagine people here must see that kind of questioning quite often. If that’s not too much trouble, I would greatly appreciate any feedback, tips, pointers, ways to optimize space / money on this system (based on the MN shared System), that I’ve been iterating on (and wracking my head over!) for about a month.

I’m looking to build an instrument that allows me to potentially make whole pieces, as well as sound design. I’m specifically hoping to avoid wasting money reselling modules, and to minimize GAS.

I’ve given myself a few design principles :

  • Function and form, but function before form
  • Immediacy and playability over feature depth and precision
  • Minimum to no screens (save for spectro/oscillo)
  • Whatever you do, don’t go above 15-18U. The lesser, the better.
  • I’ll not skimp on the right module/case

Regarding the how of it all :
I’m thinking as a target : a Make noise Shared System case (main beast) & 3U 104HP skiff (for extra in-studio stuff & module holder). As a start I’ll fill up the Shared System case, then move on from there.

For context, I own a Blofeld, a Minilogue, Bitwig, an 0-coast and a wonderful Deluge. Any sequencing is therefore likely to come last, but I’m too impressed by the René not to want it. My musical style is shifting at the moment, but overall techno/ambient/idm/industrial/noise/concrète.

Thanks in advance !

The link seems to be broken. The question though is why not just Shared System?

Fixed the link, should be working now.
Regarding the Shared System, it definitely started out that way, but I didn’t feel the Echophon, yet liked the Mimeophon a great deal. Plus, I really wanted Rings + Noise (modal synth) as well as Ears and ES-8 (because I’m still on the computer a great deal, and Bitwig is getting deeper by the year). Thus did I discover the pains of not having enough HP !

I personally hate the pots on mini versions of mutable modules, especially rings. I’d strongly advise for original version of rings.

That’s concerning. Is this issue worth losing a module in the main case (bear in mind I’ll likely stick to it for a long while) ?

Rings is a really playable module and those pots for me are “set and forget” as I have big hands. It’s even more pronounced having cables all over the module. It might not be an issue for you, just check it.

Will definitely do, thanks.

The minipots thing is a personal preference but you really do notice a difference workflow-wise that isn’t immediately obvious when just looking at pictures online.
A minipot requires a positive grip with two fingers and generally has more resistance (yet less precision) than a regular knob, which you only need to nudge to affect.

I want to stress that it is personal preference but they are more different as a user interface than you would expect not having tried them.

That makes a whole lot of sense. Interface is essential to me! I’ll see if I can shift things around.

Looks like I’m gonna have to sacrifice/replace either Erbe or René or DPO.

  • DPO I’m bummed about : I originally came to Eurorack because I wanted a Buchla Easel and realized I could do more with EuroRack for around the same price. There are a few other oscillators that have caught my attention, but none of my favorites are “complex” (which is the direction that makes the most sense to me for modular), and those that are I either don’t like or make for a marginal HP gain (CS-L).

  • Erbe I always regret leaving out.

  • And René while not a priority would not make the box really standalone which would be a shame. I question the use of a tempi without René, as well.

Any ideas ?

A couple of options:

  • Since you have es-8 use the rings in VCV rack
  • Complex oscillator makes sense when you are into FM stuff, otherwise a lot of ground can be covered with a couple of simple oscillators like ts-l for example.
  • Also some uses of brains and wogglebug can be approximated with stages and marbles (or smaller pachinko version) combo (which for melodic cases I’d prefer), here also VCV might be useful.
  • In eurorack all hp gains are marginal
