i used a mk4 disting for this exact purpose for years, and it works a treat but it’s not without its caveats…

the longer the sample length is of the loop, the more processor intensive it becomes (as one might expect,) so if you try and do anything fancy to it (reverse, scrub, speed) other than just playing it back, it could get weird. if you drop a super long sample onto the card and select the algo with reverse, the module creates a whole new reversed version of the file the first time you do this, and if its big, it takes quite a while to do that…so def don’t try that live.

also the dual playback mode is nice. similar to having two plays, but with half the power consumption and more options.

@baleen yeah this has quickly become from 2hp play to recommendations fast.

More details on what im looking for is a modular:

  • wav player/sampler(i don’t need sampling for what i want to do)

  • play longer field recording in a seamless loop(i know on my end i would hav to prep files to be seamless just don’t want player to add an audible gap)

  • pick a sample out of a bank as i would use one field recording for each “song”

  • pitch down and slow sample to taste

  • 4hp max(trying to build a portable)

bonus thoughts
Stereo is not needed but would be a bonus for future or bigger case. Im not looking to be hands on with this module other then ocasianly choosing a sample pitching it and carrying on the music part.

@jwm think it would work for me. I have been looking up demos on youtube and i saw a looping one but it seamed the cv was for startpoints instead of pitch. but im unfamiliar with how this thing actually works so some of the other modes or sittings might do it.

What about a radio music? I totally have mine loaded up with banks of drums samples in one shot mode hooked up to a Zlob 2hp VCA and Timo’s Ian Fritz dual simple AR controlled by a MIDI/CV voice of my Dubldeca. Sample selection with 1v/oct and the station knob and the start knob is acting as a pitch shit. Killer sample player and it can most definitely loop on end plus scrub where ever.

I’d really check it out.

Disting is great too of course

Yeah Radio Music looks good. I didn’t see it had an updated firmware that can pitch stuff. @jmsiener @xenus_dad dad.

I would second this. I have 2 that I use exclusively for field recording playing / mangling. It’s easy to use and super fast. Works great, though the mini sd card insertion and removal is fiddly at best.

Hi all. Anyone have a tip for a solid module with S&H and noise that’s 8hp or less?

Qu-Bit Nanorand could be good?

Animodule has a nice 4hp module that has noise, s/h, and slew called SHNoize I believe. I used to have one and it did the trick. If I were looking for something now I’d probably go for the Doepfer a-118-2. Lots of different noise types plus switchable S&H and T&H

If you can diy, I did this (it’s three sections of MI Kinks S+H with independent noise and s+h in 4hp):

Looks nice, but seems a bit overpriced to me. I like the Doepfer A-182-2 that @hinterlands pointed out (it was already looking like a solid pick).

Looks like a solid choice but I kinda wanted tunable noise.

Ah, sorry, didnt see that! Oops - sorry! (Filter it?)

Eh, for some weird reason, I only have one (functional) filter. :woman_shrugging: I definitely need more of those, but I am currently building a PMF FK24 and am trying to make a Supersynthesis CEM3328LPF.

Another vote for Disting mk4. Last time I used it to play a 30 minute recording as the background for my set. Even dug into the playlist file format, where I learned I could turn one of the audio outs into a trigger output. The triggers are evenly spaced across the file, which was surprisingly useful for that set.

Just a general question/discussion on LFOs here.

How do you guys use LFOs? I’ve enjoyed using clocked random voltages a lot more than the one LFO i have at the moment. I think i perhaps get bored with LFOs because the modulation feels predictable. I think part of that is probably attributed to how i’m using them at the moment.

So i guess i’m asking, what am i missing? How do you guys use LFOs? What do you like to pair them with, and do you have any key advice to use them creatively/tastefully?

Mixing two (or more) LFOs of different frequencies can make them less predictable. You can also run modulations signals like LFOs through many ‘audio’ effects like wavefolders, delays (as long as the inputs are DC coupled), etc. for more variation.

My go-to is quadraturia on ornament and crime, paired with tempi. with tempi, I can send a modulating clock that modulates in intervals of the main clock 2x,3x,/2/6 etc). quadtraturia generates 4 related LFO’s , where you can control the phase relationship and waveform of each, as well well as control those via CV. Also important is that you can control the output range so you don’t need to attenuate on the other end or in between. It’s a great source of morphing modulation! Lately I have been running one of those LFOs into the CV in on ochd which provides another 8 semi-related LFOs that are unattentuated. That’s a lot of modulation in very little hp. Have fun!

Multiple unsynced LFOs into multiple destinations that affect timbre.

Or just not worrying whether LFOs are predictable, with other musical elements in play… or taking advantage of it and having LFOs influence the rhythm of what I perform
