Anyone using the beatstep pro with modular?
I had my first go tonight but it did not go well, as the notes played with the beatstep where very shrill and with no gate at all (dunno why, I asked Arturia, I am sure they will help cause they are great).

I would like to know your techniques and tricks!

Yeah just started diving thru the manual…I was expecting the doepfer oscillator to take positive voltage but now I am not sure anymore and I will check

I do Beatstep Pro & modular and it works very well. I do remember I had to get the configuration right using the laptop configuration software, but after that everything’s been fine.

I do for one of my 6U systems and I love it

i am adding the crow to my shared system first i think
anyone else done so?
is crow overkill with a tempi?

I wouldn’t think so, given that crow can be pretty much anything you want it to be. Gives you interop w/ other systems that MN doesn’t really provide in any of their modules.

that’s what i was thinking – i tried a Yarns 6hp “mbrane” and though small and economical it worked “ok”
as a master timing clock. I refuse to spend any more money with Expert Sleepers so i didnt even go there so perhaps crow will solve it

I have a Metropolis it’s a great format for a sequencer, I’ve been having a problem with the slide buttons. They seem to turn on by themselves, and pressing them often has no effect, sometimes pressing one turns another one on while not changing the current one. It s really maddening and frustrating.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Been thinking about something I want to do but not sure if there’s a module that exists to do so. I’ve been running into situations where I may want to dynamically change the routing of of an audio signal from one place to another but in a way that’s smoother than just outright repatching. For example, last night I had my Digitone going into my Morphagene while I had another synth line running through my QPAS and Mimeophon. What I wanted to do was essentially fade out the synth line and fade in the sample I got in the Morphagene through that same signal chain. I realize there is some cross fading that could be done with something like Cold Mac, but does something exist along the lines of like Frames where I can set routing “presets” and then fade one signal between multiple outputs (but with multiple input signals).

Not sure if that makes a TON of sense but I feel like it could present some really interesting patching.

You are looking for a matrix mixer which remembers the connection graph (eg whoch input is connected to which output), has built in VCAs (controlling the level of each connection) and built-in storage of each VCA’s gain. These are not so common.

Your best bet is to treat it slightly more modular - a VCA matrix like the 4MS one, plus a separate module (like frames) to control the VCA gains.

I had a feeling something like a VCA matrix would be my best bet. What I’m imagining in my head is almost like Frames but with multiple outs for each in so for each “preset” you make, you can determine which output you want to send it to and then effectively fade between outputs as you change the frame. Only issue with something like the VCA matrix by 4ms is most of my signals are stereo so it would be a lot of real estate for effectively only 2 channels. Stereo is expensive!

yeah, there are several matrix mixers which let you store presets, however many of them don’t have VCAs, so they are just essentially MIMO switches; however it looks like the one @oot linked above has both preset routings and cross fading between presets!

Doepfer A-135-1 or 4ms vca matrix combined with a Pressure Points or some other programmer would give you preset mixes. The challenge is the cross fade requirement—you’d need to add multiple cross-faders. Doesn’t Frames do this?

The A135-1 will fade across channels with the companion module, but you’d need two of the 135s to do it in stereo.

recently acquired a WMD/SSF Ultrafold, thinking it might be a good compliment to the various outputs (self-oscillating) of a Filter 8. I’d read a bit about it, watched some demos, etc. but I’m wondering if anyone could share tips/suggestions about what might be conducive to getting interesting results.

I’ve been able to create saw waves (quite pleasing) by self-patching the filter’s exp. FM input, but i’m wondering what types of waves are ideal for the wave folder’s input (along with the feedback input) … there’s a YouTube video by Brandonlogic, where he’s created a sort of Krell patch (it sounds really good) using an Ultrafold, among other things … trying to think of ways to alter the frequencies of the various outputs of the Filter 8 (so that they’re not the same freq.), for the feedback input on the Ultrafold, and I’m thinking there should be an easy way to do that, I just haven’t really taken advantage of the functionality of my Disting (mk4) … curious about the various ways to get satisfying timbres out of the Ultrafold using simple waveforms, and potential ways to use more complex waveforms with a wave folder (if that’s even worthwhile), etc.

Sines and triangles generally. I gave a tip earlier in this thread about using a filtered saw wave instead of a triangle but typically straight up saw waves won’t give great results.

I use the feedback a lot on the Ultrafold. Some wave shift settings can thin out the sound, which can be used to get different dynamics. Also, the plus and minus side of the feedback behave differently, only the positive side uses the external input. You can mix another source by plugging it in the feedback in and control its amplitude with the feedback cv. There are so many things to do with that module…

Since Filter 8 is capable of linear FM, I think my earlier post here is relevant:


For getting different frequencies out of the outputs you could either use a clock divider to go down or a full wave rectifier to go one octave up, although I think its sound would be very similar to a slightly wavefolder sine and thus not give you the variety you’re looking for. Dividers often output squares which don’t work in a wavefolder on their own although mixing one into the feedback input will give you some interesting results, same with modulating the fold amount with it.

The other piece of the CV bus deals with audio IO, so some combination of the 1u modules.
