I’ve been kind of in to that thinking as well.

Do you have any modules to recommend?

you can get interesting and surprising sounds outside of a modular environment. the workflow is probably the only thing truly unique, so if you dislike that workflow, it may just a be a bad fit altogether.

Why don’t you try using Rytm’s impulse machine (may have to raise gain with overdrive in amp section) to trigger sounds in place of or layered with the Rytm drum sounds you like? Or you could trigger a delayed and modulated drone/filtered noise/ambient fx event with EOC on Maths.

I’ve been playing around with impulse machine into Marbles (pachinko) which set of the integra solum which is connected to the inputs of the squid. A basic 4 to the floor pattern added some real funky stuff thanks to the dividing of integra solum. It was pretty fun actually

That is my fear, that is why I’m thinking of selling it alltogether.

Morphagene, Arbhar et al are very gratifying. They also go well with samplers like the Salmlple. Lml…

In terms of oscillators, I’m very partial to wavetables - things like the E352, Piston Honda Mkiii or even Shapeshifter (more of a complex osc w/ wavetables as one feature). EDIT: And, of course, the SWN, too.

There are also some filters that allow you to do interesting stuff. Klangbau’s Twin Peak Resonator is my favorite, for sound shaping but also as an oscillator for pinging. The QPAS is cool, too. Doesn’t track 1v/oct, though.

Lately I’ve greatly enjoyed me some Just Friends evolving drones, some Akemie’s Taiko FM pads, some Mimeophon resonant textures, some MCO animated wavetables and some Zadar glitchy kinda wavetables. Each has gone nicely with a side of rhythmic stuff.

Cheap, cost effective, and flexible is a Disting. The various implementations of the Radio Music / sample playback & scrubbing means you can take looong files and add them in the background for texture. Field recordings? Breakbeats? Whale songs? It’s all there to be modular-ised. It can also be roughly 1,400 other things in a pinch.

You have random covered with your Marbles clone.

Having flexible / related modulation is useful, for that either the Just Friends that someone mentioned or a Tides 2018 gives you lots of options. I could consider keeping Maths just for its flexibility and use as an envelope follower. The trick is to find ways to mix / combine control voltage to find unpredictable results.

For oscillators, the world is your oyster. I’m partial analog menu-less stuff, but something like Plaits gives you a lot of timbre options.

This is close to a litmus test. If you don’t find patching and re-patching to be fun, then the modular process may not be for you. If so, buying more modules won’t fix it.

If you generally do like patching, but you found a particular aspect of your patching process to be repetitive and tedious, then that is something that might be solved with a module purchase to alleviate the point of frustration.

i try to approach daily modular with a goal, try to learn some aspect of a module that I haven’t tried and a lot of the time something stems from that i can tape and use. recently that has been as simple as “try to get Bindubba to output all 16 steps in a row” or “finally try FM on the Blacet Oscillator.”

I agree that is a bit weird!

Is it reason not to get one? How is the build quality?

(Not the person from whom the question was asked from, but) For me, having the LED’s next to each channel negates this issue pretty well. You can see what’s happening on the channel, and especially if it’s an offset you’re dealing out from the channel, you get a rough idea of where you’re at from the LED.

So I would say no, it’s not.

I think the build quality is good. I’m not that troubled by the pots being looser than on some modules, but I know many people are.

I have this one:

If I’m reading the manual correctly, the Mixwitch can add gain to the signal per this sentence:

Mixers
The mixing section is made of a pair of two-input mixers. Each of mixers A & B works the same.
Each potentiometer controls the gain from zero to max. At maximum setting, the signal is
amplified slightly above x2.

But that’s not listed in any other bullet points. But if that’s correct, it can add roughly 6 dB of gain? This could be a flexible solution to my low output Epoch modules and RxMx.

Yes. Each of Mixwitch’s channels can add a little more than 2X gain. +10v and -10v offset are also on hand. The unorthodox approach using attenuators and a polarity switch takes a moment to get used to if you’re used to, say, Maths, but it has its advantages (such as knowing exactly where zero is). My only warning is that the LEDs are rather bright.

don’t discount the Nebulae. I haven’t used the Morphagene, but i’ve used many many granular samplers/synths/effects processors and this does exactly what i’ve always wanted them to do.

that most recent ig video you made by running cv outs of the rytm to your modular setup is incredible. I think that’s a really cool way of combining the two. sound design and complex patterns

Thank you! Yes I’m really fond of that way of modulating clock. I’m not a huge fan of the squid Salmple though. I want something knobbier. Sometimes I get really cool textures and rhythms from it, but it’s very stativ I can’t change up the sound in a natural manner with out repatching and I think that is what is bothering me.

Nebulae is great in its knobbyness and overall hands on way of handling an audio buffer.

On the topic of approaching modular with a specific purpose and intent in mind — which is just so so important and has been discussed at length already in this thread — this is a neat video that popped up in my feed today:

I think JakoJako sums this all up very nicely.

For me personally, after a couple of years into euro, I realised I had the beginnings of lots of would/could be individual systems in my rack, but had tried to squash all of these ideas into a singular 6U/104hp space. It wasn’t a cohesive instrument, and I wasn’t enjoying playing it.

I’ve had to make some tough decisions, but have since cut a number of modules from my setup (which I otherwise love), in order to make room for functionality and achieving my specific performance goals etc.

this really made me GAS for the Piston Honda, along with this one. Sounds so beautiful
