my goal starting out a couple years ago was ā€œlearn how to modularā€ and iā€™ve leaned on the Neutron for establishing the basics. iā€™ve kept it in because, dollar for dollar, itā€™s a pretty heavy hitter.

i have a lot to learn wrt patching methodology and making voltage do what i want. i tend toward slower, evolving, darker ambient, somewhere in a tim hecker / the fun years area. hereā€™s a patch from a little while ago, and one i enjoyed from perfect circuit ā€” particularly the more chaotic wavefolding bits.

so now, the 104 is a little more Buchla inspired, since iā€™ve just discovered what a low pass gate really does.

i have Surface performing the duties of Plaits and Pluck, and the turing / O_C / Arp / Shifty combo feels flexible enough in getting a few layered voices in there, though it might be overkill. i may be doing myself a disservice in losing another voice in Plaits, though. also considering Plonk taking the place of Surface.

i think i like the concept of the 0chd more than the execution ā€” iā€™d love a triangle / square switch, and i wish i could retrigger a cycle (though maybe i can with the CV inā€¦) ā€” but i also think itā€™ll add that organic, evolving modulation across the board, and will be a nice match with the Erbe Verb.

didnā€™t really plan on utilizing the Intellijel caseā€™s I/O, maybe because i donā€™t fully understand how it works. :stuck_out_tongue: i need to use their 1U I/O modules to access whatā€™s built in, correct? iā€™ve been using the Tangle Quartet mostly as a mixer, and thatā€™s been mostly fine, so the 1U Out module can likely go away too.

so, all of that said ā€” whatā€™s sticking out as potential overlaps or shortcomings? appreciate all thoughts!

Why might someone want a pin matrix when they could have a matrix with a pot or a switch instead? I donā€™t really get this concept, obviouslyā€¦

Itā€™s a different approach.

A matrix mixer (the kind with pots and sometimes VCAs) prioritizes mixing signals. A pin matrix prioritizes routing signals. With the latter, you give up fine control over mixing of signals, but you gain (at least in the Hordijk/LƬon design) the send/return functionality and a smaller form factor.

Hey allā€¦ Iā€™m kinda struggling with deciding what I want to do with my remaining 8 hpā€¦

Leaning towards something Nonlinearcircuitsā€¦ butā€¦ tbh main thing is I just want to close the rack. I donā€™t feel like Iā€™m missing anything really when Iā€™m patching, so this can just be something new and fun. Whatā€™s a cool thing I could try that Iā€™m missing? Switch? Mixer?

What would you doā€¦ and if you dont mindā€¦ why?

You really do have a lot of your bases covered, it looks like a nice rack. Maybe an effects unit like an Endorphines Milky Way or a Happy Nerding FX Aid (if you can find one!)

Well, Iā€™m coming at this from the perspective of a complete newbie with just a humble palette and only a couple of months practical experience, so if youā€™ll kindly indulge me for a minuteā€¦ :smiley:

Iā€™d say: leave it empty for now. Maybe get an 8hp blank, to keep out dust and cats =^.^= and just enjoy the system youā€™ve got, as it is. Make a few patches and see what your rack wants you to get, when itā€™s ready!

Why I say that is because I find Iā€™m regularly swapping out modules, trying out different configurations, seeing where each new re-jig leads me and quietly, in the back of my mind, making a shortlist of what I think I need. And I can say that, each and every time, Iā€™m glad I didnā€™t impulse buy something that would just sit unused for months, until I finally got back to it.

Play ModularGrid Tetris if it helps to ease the GAS!

Other than that, as the saying goes: ā€œYou can never have too many VCAsā€! :sunglasses:

did anyone here pick up the first run of michigan synth works BLN ? it looks like a pretty dreamy companion to norns at that footprint

Thank you everyone for the advice. Iā€™ve resisted putting fx in the rack though eventually I may do an fx pod or something. Tripe Sloth seems like the direction Iā€™ll go. Micro Tides would be great too but hard to beat 11 cv outputs in 8hp, and while Iā€™m not sure that Triple Sloth is the most flexible substitute for a source of random voltage, it does fill a gap that Iā€™ve got and seems like it could add some real life to patches.

That does look handy for Norns, though I find that I often need to make subtle adjustments to levels, both in and out, and might miss having those controls. I use the 4ms Listen IO to move audio between the rack and Norns. Itā€™s great, but thrice the footprint and costs a bit more.

whatā€™s kind of an average input level that you set the listen i/o to with norns ?

BLM can be set to either -10db or 4db and the listen i/o goes -inf to 30db. assuming this gets loud enough Iā€™d be happy to to use mix controls on norns (I can midi map them if I feel like it), but a gotcha would be an output level thatā€™s too low I suppose ā€¦ but it seems like any volume bump would do the trick, so maybe I answered my own question : )

Yeah, youā€™re probably fine with the mixer in Norns.

On the 4ms, I generally keep the knob at around 10:00, so itā€™s down quite a bit. Even then, I find myself reducing levels in Norns as well.

Long shot: does anyone have x-pan, maths, chord v2, basimilus, an optimix or one of those unpowered low pass gates, a filter, maybe a Mult, and maybe an 0-ctrl and 0-coast? If so whatā€™s it like?!?!

If I were to make a skiff with those modules only, do you think the results would be interesting? I wish there was a YouTube video of this combo so that I could hear its strengths and limitations to anticipate what to add or subtract.

Ah. 0-CTRL is a perfectly reasonable control surface and sequencer to start with. 0-COAST is a perfectly reasonable semi-modular synth to pair with it. If youā€™d rather start a rack than buy a 0-COAST, then I would start with something like Maths, Optomix (or other LPG) and an oscillator that looks fun to you (but probably not Chord 2, which is rather specialized). Either way, master the combo and then let that experience guide you forward.

There are plenty of examples of how 0-COAST sounds. If you go with your own oscillator, an LPG shouldnā€™t color it drastically, just provide a nice way to shape discreet notes in conjunction with the envelope generator.
