This kind of continues a discussion above and I hope this final request for advice wraps up my first rack: what to fill the final 12hp.

I have a Shared Synth (dpomathsdemixopto) plus Pittsburgh Microvolt.

I’ve already ruled out: Kermit and O_C due to their menu diving (but am open to a persuasive case)

So it comes down to: Cold Mac + ochd vs Batumi+ (2hp panel) Poti

I’m totally crazy for Cold Mac. I think it’s just a genius module and Whimsical/Trent is just lovely people. Add an ochd and the idea would be really interesting modulation possibilities. Plus it would serve to glue all my modulation / sound sources together.

But I feel I’d be better served by a Batumi with regards to modulation possibilities, which at the moment I am “lacking”. Plus audio rate, random etc.

Thanks in advance for the continued help. This board is wonderful.

“final” “wrap up” “fill” not a good basis for buying modules.

Ochd, Cold Mac, and Batumi are all solid and useful. The former two offer you more—and more interesting—modulation, the latter offer tempo-sync. Batumi is a bit fussy if you try to use some of the special firmware features (I ignore them) and the very existence of Poti is enraging. Regardless, you’ll need to think through attenuation and offset for of all these LFOs.

Clearly I’m not looking for the easy answer  But you’re absolutely right.

@mdoudoroff Well the basis of buying is more modulation. As I don’t want to expand any farther than 84hp (for now), what modulation in 12hp…

DPO is thoroughly attenuated, plus maths and vcas.

when i first built my case, not too long ago, i mainly wanted to be able to use a eurorack granular module. that’s what finally convinced me to go this route. after thinking about it, i decided it would be fun to use one of my favorite sequencers also now that i have the case to use it with. so i got rene, and since i would need a voice to make use of that, i got rings. I have also wanted rings ever since i used the vcv rack emulation.

I really love rene, but i almost never end up using the rack for sound generation or melodic things. rings has become almost entirely useless as far as big picture production even though it sounds beautiful. and so i feel like i don’t really need rene anymore either. I would have liked to use rings as a resonator, but i really don’t find it very useful in that case. I have a digitone and a Fates for sound generation and sequencing so the rene and rings, while they do add more organic and unique possibilities are essentially redundant. If i had a bigger case and could justify buying more modules like a Piston Honda, Mangrove, sequential switch, maths, it would make sense to use the eurorack as a sound source, but in my case, it doesn’t really make sense.

I do really love the o_C for modulation mostly (low rentz & quadrature), sometimes piqued, and sometimes the hemisphere suite. and i like the Tilt for more organic modulation and nice ADS envelopes/slewing. Blends is good as a vca and logic/mixing. and I like my little filter. Obviously i love the Nebulae, it is one of my favorite pieces of gear i’ve ever owned.

So im thinking, I should get rid of Rene and nRings and turn this into a audio manipulation unit. bring in external audio and warp it here. I would like to have some audio generation, maybe a noise source or something like dinky’s taiko. like something to add to external audio signals that are brought in, to layer textures, but that’s not as important. I used to have a Thyme, which i loved but wasnt practically useful for the digitone, which is how it was routed in my signal chain. But im thinking maybe the Mimeophon would be good in this case. More experimental, hands on processing for sound design. Phonogene and Echophon sound cool too. I was thinking of the Modcan Frequency shifter, kamieniec, maybe Cold Mac, Three Sisters (to replace the 2hp mmf possibly), Warps. The type of audio mangling modules that can process audio in a way that my octatrack cannot. Any ideas for that?

If i sold nRings and Rene, i’d have 42hp free. I wouldnt really need more modulation sources, although Ochd looks very cool. I also have the Warped Circuits 0hp Lpg, so thats another sound design aspect that i enjoy covered. The makenoise systems usually have a lot of these bases covered i guess.

Do any modules that can do creative experimental audio signal processing especially well or originally come to mind? tyme sefari? tahn? I find that when i am processing my field recordings in ableton for sound design/ambeint soundscapes/concrete style arrangements that i use a lot of the utilities like transient processors, saturation, freq shifters, eq, compression, filters. but i also like to throw in the more interesting plugins like puremagnetik’s newer granular type plugins and the plugin alliance Unfiltered Audio series and a lot of m4l stuff. i like being able to deconstruct, smear, re-layer/piece back together, stretch, spread out. I assume mimeophon is good for this. I’d have close to enough money if i sold both the rene and nrings. I think that might be a good start. maybe a zoia would be a good idea? thoughts?

You might already know, but rings can be a pretty interesting audio modulator. You could put it before or after the nebula or feedback though both.

wait, how do you mean? as a resonator?

Take external audio, run through the rings input, then into nebulae? or take nebulae into the rings input and send rings back into nebulae’s input?

I have tried similar things, but i never get good results when trying to use it as an external audio processor or resonator

maybe im doing it wrong

On top of that, Rings can be put in it’s Disastrous Peace mode where it becomes a string synth, where it’s input is run through its effect with multiple modes (Phaser / Formant filter/ Reverb etc).

I guess it depends on what you’re looking for (how you define “good results”) and what sort of audio you run into it, but Rings is probably my all-time favorite module and what got me into Eurorack in the first place.

Have you tried using a constant voltage into the frequency input to drop Rings’ frequency way below normal? It acts like a lo-fi delay/reverb at that point, depending on the mode.

Have you tried modulating Position while it’s got something running through it? It’s kind of a phasery effect. I personally think that works especially well in red (Karplus) or red flashing (Karplusverb) mode.

I’ve sold a lot of modules and rings is the only one I regret selling. I got stuck in a certain way of working with it which was not very inspiring. When I listen back to what I recorded when I first got it I miss it. Maybe coming to it without any preconceptions about what you want to get out of it that day, letting it guide you toward something interesting, is the way to go. I think I forgot that for a while. I totally understand if for some people that kind of workflow is a turn off though, some days sound ugly for sure.

I have never tried disastrous peace mode with an external source, i was under the assumption that the point of that mode was for the sound engine but thats awesome. i’ll have to try it. thanks @Demure

I haven’t tried putting a constant voltage into frequency. would it have to be a negative voltage? that sounds really cool. trying that now. *Edit: this is really cool actually. thanks for the tips gentlemen

i have modulated everything while using it as an external resonator, yes. i never really noticed the phase effect in any mode. which is kind of what i mean by “good”. it’s usually not noticeable. i guess my expectations came from the vcv emulation. when you run super slow lfos into structure and position, a little bit on brightness and maybe damping in vcv, you get this gorgeous drone. the only nice sound i get from the module are nice guitar string karplus strings in poly mode

this is the heavily modulated (but attenuated) drone-like sound i coaxed out of the vcv rack version. can’t seem to get it on my module for some reason:

I think batumi+poti is an amazing setup for classic (and not so classic) modulations and to me feels slightly more “penetrable” from a usability perspective than cold Mac where classic modulations are what you want; in other words, for your purposes I couldn’t imagine batumi would disappoint. It does have some secondary functions on the faders (e.g fine tune mode) so it’s not 100% WYSIWYG but everything is quite close to the surface and obvious.

Cold Mac I’d describe more as a device you need to learn to “collaborate and cooperate” with to get the best out of it. It has a more particular user interface that can get into very interesting territory when you explore the patching possibilities. I’d say that possibility comes at the expense of having to dig a lot further and a need to really internalise and gel with its way of working. Adding ohcd will give you some of the more direct possibilities batumi provides but in limited number (but in a very good function per HP yet usable form factor).

For my system, if I had to choose batumi or cold Mac+ochd I’d go cold Mac (probably no ochd) as I want opinionated and even obtuse elements to force a unique way of approaching things. If I was someone wanting a powerful, interesting and direct modulation source I’d vote batumi.

I didn’t know Disastrous Peace mode used the input either… I pretty much never use it, I’ll have to give it a try sometime

Thanks for the offer but I’m not feeling the clones. If I get another one I’ll get it from Mutable. Exited to see what the new thing is too!

me too. i wonder if it will be worth getting over arbhar, which everyone says is like a clouds 2

ok ! just want to confirm some research I just did. the motu ultralite interfaces have DC-coupled outputs but AC-coupled inputs - BUT ultralite mk4 has an optical input, therefore, mk4 + ES6 = 8 x CV/audio in / 6x CV/audio out ?

From the ES6 product page: "Please note that a connected ES-3 or ES-8 is required for operation. "

Yeah, the ES-6 is purely an expander of sorts for the ES-3; I think it has something to do with how ADAT clocking works.

Well said. Batumi and Cold Mac also make quite a wonderful pair for each other. I love how they inspire very different mindsets so I can focus on one or the other first depending on the feel of the patch, and most importantly there’s a huge amount of options for different ways for them to modulate each other, and run Batumi through Cold Mac for further exploration (and back into Batumi too). I have mine sitting next to each other in my system with a WMD/SSF SPO close by for further attenuation, inversion, and offset.

Maybe I’m looking for a unicorn here, but is there a compact(ish?) mixer out there, preferably with mutes, that also attenuates to line level so I don’t need a separate “outs” module? I’m looking at the Cosmix (https://cosmotronic.nl/cosmix.html) but not sure whether the main out can go direct to my interface as long as I turn the master down.
