The Gate Offset should always be applied when controlling it via CV/gate.

It’s in units of sample frames, by the way.

Oh, that’s a relief… was thinking “it can’t possibly be milliseconds can it?!” The gate offset solved all my crackling problems completely for sure.

Just purchased one of these strictly for the multisampling capabilities.

The piano demos sold me and it reminds me of my asr-10 which crapped out on me

I’m wondering how the string samples sound?

I heard of someone imported mellotron samples should it be pretty easy to import other sort of romper samples?

I love a lot of the old stock sounds from some of the older rack synths, the ensoniq and emu stuff.

About the sample algorithms audio issues: after quite some struggle with different SD cards, gate offset parameters, fw updates etc., I still haven’t found a situation where SD 6 Triggers and Multisample properly play samples without any issue for a long period of time. Sometimes I would think I’m getting somewhere stable and sure enough, after 30/45 mn, something happens, whether it’s a temporary dropout or something that completely freezes the module. The best I could get is to mitigate the issue with a Sandisk Ultra card, by strictly sticking to 16bit mono 44.1 Khz and stay within a 1 octave pitch range for sample playback. The module is amazing, but with the many issues, it has a bit of a Cyberpunk 2077 effect on me: I can see that it looks great, but I still haven’t been able to really experience it as it’s meant to be experienced. After a lot of reading, I’m starting to wonder if some people have managed to use these algos without any problem at all? I still can’t figure out if it’s just my unit or if it’s just the way the Disting EX is. I ordered a couple of different SD cards but I’ve tried 3 already and I’m starting to lose hope a little… Any positive experience or specific advice from those who managed to solve the issue long term?

I have no specific advice I’m afraid, but can confirm that with a Samsung evo SD card my Disting EX works reliably on multisample mode. I have also put together a custom sample set. This took me a while and I had frequent drop out and crackle issues when the sample set was too big (too many velocity sets, etc). I managed to get it working by reducing the sample set size.

Do you have issues with different sample sets? Are some more reliable than others?

Interesting. Yes, some samples seem more prone to issue than others, even if everything is mono 44.1 Khz 16 bit, I’m not too sure why. I still can’t really find a pattern (other than more than 44.1 Khz is a big no no on all my cards (as in big dropouts fest)). The issue is relatively rare on stock sample banks, but they aren’t any different than my own in terms of format or length, so I’m not too sure what’s going on. I will try this card, maybe it will improve things. Thanks!

are the cards that you are trying formatted FAT32 and partitioned ‘Master Boot Record’? Also the cards that work best support High Speed Mode.

I’m using the stock Samsung Evo card and the multisample algorithm works great, no dropouts or crackles. I had another Samsug EVO Plus card laying around, not the same as the stock card, so I formatted that and transferred samples to it and tested it out and got all kinds of dropouts. So using right card seems to be key.

They’re all formatted this way indeed. I’m definitely going to try this Samsung card, thanks for the tip!

On page 10 and 11 of the user manual there are hints and tests for the SD cards. Have you done the Disting EX - SD card speed test? You can find it in the “misc” menu.

The Kingston Canvas Select Plus card has also been recommended. https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-32GB-microSDHC-Class10-SDCS2/dp/B07YGZ7FY7

I just got the Kingston Canvas Select Plus that I linked to earlier, formatted it put the samples back on it then tested it and I get crackles. So far the only card that works for me without any problems is the Samsung card that came with the distingEX.

Hi guys, new here. Came across this thread on Disting Ex as I’ve also had issues with it. I’ve tried the SD card recommended in the manual (Sans Disk) and then Os at Expert Sleepers suggested trying the Kingston Canvas one. I have audio glitches on most sets with both cards, but the soft piano set (the youtube demo that sold it to me) works fine on both!

My own samples play back terribly (44.1, 16bit) and a lot of the stock ones glitch out unless I reduce the voice count to as low as 3.

Ohm, could you let me know the exact spec of the two Samsung EVO plus cards that you tested - you mentio0end one that worked and one didn’t?

Byzero, could you also please share the details of the SD card that works for you?

It seems crazy that the cards Os @ Expert Sleepers recommended don’t even seem to work, and that there’s such variety between user’s results!

Have you tried increasing the gate offset parameter to its maximum? That helped for me (although so far I’ve been using the standard sample sets).

Hey Simon, thanks, yes I tried that  I was also getting the same issue with MIDI.

On top of the audio issue, I’ve started getting a tuning issue too! When using more than 1 CV pair, the other gate inputs are creating variable pitches. I contacted Expert Sleepers, and they said it probably needs recalibrating.
I’ve only had it a week!

the yellow one is the one that works for me

Damn, I just bought some of the red ones…

I appreciate the Disting Ex has many amazing features on it, and the SD Multisample playback is just one of them - but are there any real alternatives to this particular function in other Eurorack modules?

TBH the multisample playback was one of the main reasons I got the Ex

1010music Bitbox Micro is arguably better for multisampling

Is norns capable of controlling the Disting EX via crow using i2c? If so, what are some of the overall use cases/possibilities? Do any norns scripts currently take advantage of this functionality? Thanks!

Crow just had an update for this type of functionality, but I think Norns will need an update to be able to address it. I think the capabilities are the same as what Teletype can do already, so you could look there to see what is possible.
