I never had any of the previous incarnations and though the ex is incredibly useful thing to have I also find it infuriatingly cramped and pokey. The letter and number labelling of input/outputs is confusing too. The led light sockets do make up for this somewhat and are a really good feature. Found it much more of a learning curve than I thought I would. I do sort of wish they had made it more of its own thing and less two disting mk4’s. I really hate setting up the two sides doing different things and then trying to adjust parameters. as more single algos come out I will like it more i think. Could it be made to do something like Pam’s creative envelopes lfo’s stuff maybe?
Beyond the UI experience I do find it reliable and solid enough. I need to work out the preset system next as it doesn’t turn back on where you left it.

I was told there was a phone app for quick reference but I dont think this is on the android playstore?

You might like to look at the wavetable envelope/LFO.

There are settings for auto-save & automatically loading the previous preset.

The app is iOS only I believe.

The way I see it, most of the dual algorithms are fairly simple, with few parameters to scroll through. I get good use from the crossfader, logic, comparator, min/max, 4QM, wavetable waveshaper etc. – things that I don’t necessarily need in every patch but it’s good to have them on tap when I want them.

For that kind of usage, I don’t feel like I often have to consult documentation to use several favorites. But when I do, there’s this: http://distingquickguide.rustle.works/

PR for Crow / Disting EX I2C integration: https://github.com/monome/crow/pull/360

Hoping to finish this up and test all the commands over the next few days.

we’ve added a couple of new i2c messages for the looper algorithm - clear target loop and get a loop state, you can find them here: https://github.com/scanner-darkly/teletype/wiki/DISTING-EX-I2C-SPECIFICATION

to test these you’ll need this beta until 1.4 is official released: https://github.com/expertsleepersltd/issues/issues/91 this version also fixes this i2c related bug and adds a handy feature to jump to the last parameter changed by i2c.

This is super helpful, thanks! I’ve been working off of the official manual for v1.3 + some of the teletype source code. I’ll be sure to load up the 1.4 beta.

Edit: I was going to email some questions to Os about i2c control of dual algorithms. Glad to see that’s in the pipeline based on the GitHub issues.

I don’t know if it’s only my unit or maybe a general bug? When I use the looper algorithm I getting some click-sounds when I turn a looper tracks gain up and down. Pretty annoying  have anyone else experienced this too?

@scanner_darkly, did the pitch wobbling on the EX when using the Multisample algorithm get solved with the latest firmware upgrade? Right now I’m using a DEXIBEL sound bank in my performances as I need the most realistic piano sounds I can get. I’ve been thinking about integrating the EX into my case, but the wobbling and pitch stability would be an issue …

Just a tangential note - I was having performance issues with the Multisample algorithm using the SD card which came with the unit (eFox). Cloning everything to a different SD (SanDisk) has fixed the issues for me. Just thought I’d mention it here.

Those issues were related to the pitch oscillations that several users reported, or “clicks” when playing samples?

You just saved me a whoooole lot of worry, because I’m running into the same thing.

Yeah me too. Multisample algo sequenced from ansible chokes with three voices.
I bet Os will sort it

i should’ve written down the specific samples i used when i encountered that to answer your question - it’s possible the issue might still exist but i haven’t encountered it with my later use so also possible it was solved at some point. sorry i can’t confirm with 100% certainty.

i did have an issue with strange noise when triggering overlapping notes but it was only with some samples, namely the long strings.

Same here- kind of a crackly noise that I might have otherwise contributed to an overtaxed CPU. But after jumping to s Sandisk Extreme, all is well.

Edit: the behavior presented itself again. Updating to 1.4 seems to have eliminated it.

@expertsleepers asked me to post this (discourse rules are blocking him from posting):

If you’re sequencing the SD Multisample via CV/gate, the gate offset parameter is the first thing to fiddle with. Not relevant for MIDI/i2c use though.

Does anyone know if it’s possible to start up Disting Ex with a preset and mapping pre-loaded as default, rather than the Matrix Mixer? Would be nice to not have to load them manually each time, as I use them a lot.

Yes, there are settings for that.

1.4 firmware has been officially released: https://www.expert-sleepers.co.uk/distingEXfirmwareupdates.html

includes 2 new algos - dream machine and filter bank, and a fix for sd multisample voice allocation, among other things.

Perfect :ok_hand: thank you. I have change for a Sandisk Extreme and all the samples are now played without crackle and noise.

Edit: after few test, the card Extreme not solve the problem.
