if i swap out the the pi on my fates, do i have to do anything as far as system settings/re-installation? or should it work fine, since i’m using the same sd card?

I just realized my wifi is giving me problems again and was thinking maybe i was supposed to setup the localization options in the fates install notes again or something.

wifi configuration is one instance where the hardware matters. (DHCP lease is associated with MAC address.) so you will likely need to delete and re-add the network when switching brains.

Should be fine unless you change from a pi3 to a pi4 (these use different kernels).

Also - the pi4 8GB model is untested and will likely NOT WORK (as it needs kernel updates/changes)

For WiFi…
You might want to use nmtui via the command line to reconfigure WiFi

Hello!
Is the Norns Fork using the same Hardware GPIOs (for the encoders, switches and display) on the Raspberry Pi as the Monome DIY Shield?

I tried to take a look into matron/src/hardware/gpio.c, but to be honest didn’t understand that much, can anyone point me to the line, where the mapping of the hardware GPIOs to the encoders/switches happens?

Background is, I’m trying to layout myself a simple shield, without audio codec but with nice cherry keyboard switches, I got laying around, hope my question is ok in the Fates-thread…

You might be best using the shield layout and disk image

Hi Steven @okyeron I hope it is the correct section.
An unusual problem is happening with AWAKE script (last update 200604 if it can be useful, but maybe he did it earlier).
Everything works fine until I bring the step division value to zero. When I bring the value to zero there is a very strong distortion and the sequencer seems to have gone mad. You have to delete the scritp and reload it to make it work. I made a small video to show you the problem.

sorry if this has been asked before, but i think i did something stupid when messing with the Orca engine that muted my softcut or something. I thought there was some sort of internal sound playing in orca, so i turned the “engine” volume all the way down in Params. then i switched to Cheat Codes and i wasnt getting any playback sound from the record buffers. So i tried Reels. Reels wasnt giving me any sound either, so i checked the softcut levels on the main norns levels page, checked the params page, everything seemed to be turned up but still no sound. so i went back to Orca, in params, i turned Engine volume back up. I went back to Reels, and reels started giving me sound again from record buffers. Then i went to Cheat Codes, still no sound. checked the volume all over the place, and still nothing. Tried MLR, still no sound.

Tried rebooting, still no sound. Reels works but not cheat codes or mlr. i dont know the specifics, maybe they use timber or something? not sure how all of that works, but as far as i can tell, all of the levels are turned up. Is there a way to do some sort of factory param reset maybe?

I had a similar problem a while ago that i posted about here but that was cleared up by deleting some “PSETs” from what i remember. that doesnt seem to have helped either

(hard to reproduce your situation)

Did you turn knobs from the MIX page for each script (just to be sure the display was accurately showing the system state)?

Do you have MIDI mapped to any of those controls? (eng/cut/tp)

Do you have OSC from cheat codes mapped to one of those controls? (not sure if the CC osc template does any of that)

What PSETs did you delete? Did you restart after removing them?

Did you try a SYSTEM>RESET from the menu? (which fully resets system states like the MIX page volumes)

i did not realize that system>reset did that actually. i’ll try that in the morning.

i haven’t manually mapped anything in osc, not even sure what that means.

just deleted all of the psets i made since the last sd re-flash. all of my custom savestates for cheat codes and orca.

it really seems like some weird behavior from reducing the engine level in orca. because for some reason, turning that engine level down in the orca params page affected the engine level of Reels. this made me think, obviously that the same thing was happening with the softcut levels in cheat codes, but i couldnt figure out a way to just reset them. so system reset will probably work. thanks

engine levels do not affect softcut levels.

orca uses the Timber engine as well as softcut. none of the other scripts you mention use an engine, all of them use softcut.

SYSTEM > RESET.

but softcut state is reset to default automatically when loading any script. (this includes individual voice levels, and ADC->voice routing levels, but does not include the master mix level for softcut.)

the relevant levels in the mix page are input, output, and cut.

i cannot reproduce any such weird behavior.

this sounds a little silly, but i would check your mono/stereo hardware routing. ORCA can control softcut panning per voice…

orca is actually ok, its just scripts like cheat codes and mlr that arent giving me any audio. i thought that was the case regarding timeber and orca, which is why i dont understand what happened with cheat codes. maybe its unrelated.

re: mix page - sorry, im not near my fates, i was just guessing

there’s a mono/stereo setting in cheat codes too, isnt there? i was wondering if that was the issue. but i have two audio inputs going in so i dont think it matters.

is there a common reason for softcut to stop working or become muted? does reels use softcut? because reels was working fine.

i would just try reset now but im at work, so ill see if that fixes it around 8am

or is there any parameter you can think of that cheat codes and mlr share, but reels does not? or is there a better way to troubleshoot? i guess i should have ran maiden, although i haven’t gotten my wifi issue fixed since i swapped pi’s so not positive i could connect, even with ethernet

there are surely bugs and edge cases. (this issue, for example.) softcut is a separate JACK client from the main mixer, but it is embedded in the same process, which is usually the last thing to go down if norns crashes, and it is pretty well insulated from scripting errors.

in any case, all of these scripts see pretty heavy use and borking the audio process is a pretty noticeable failure mode.

i’m suggesting to triple check hardware wiring or any other possible factors that are not, in fact, in the software components that everyone else is using without issue.

if you can reproduce a particular software error under particular conditions, i can attempt to fix it. see the link above for an example of an actionable issue report.

i didn’t mean to say it was a bad suggestion. i was just saying that i thought hardware wiring wouldn’t be the case because i was getting audio in and recorded from reels. “doesn’t matter” was referring to mono vs stereo in the specific case of cheat codes audio inputs in edit menu

system reset cleared it up. thanks for the suggestion. I’m an idiot, for some reason i have had it in my brain my whole life that “reset” just meant like a soft version of a “reboot”, as in the case of a super nintendo. sorry for taking up space here with that dumb question

just catching up on this – fwiw, cheat codes + mlr sum stereo to mono. quickly glanced at the reels code, it seems to sum as well. i’ve helped folks diagnose some phase cancellation troubles that would lead to the effect that there’s no audio coming from softcut – maybe try a single channel next time this happens just to be sure that’s not the case?

you could also try tweaking the PARAMETERS > SOFTCUT levels (not just the LEVELS page), which might be restoring to 0 from a preset. you mentioned “custom savestates” for cheat codes, which are actually all handled outside of PSETs, through collections. if you’ve been using PSETs for cheat codes, that might be at play (i know you deleted them, but just spitballing to avoid a “next time”).

i see, thanks. i’ll try mono if it happens next time. i believe i did try the softcut levels as well. but maybe not. i use psets in cheat codes for saving things like “rad sauce” but i also use collections to save the timing and if i build a bank of loop params that i like & sometimes i’ll save buffers. but yeah, i didn’t touch those this time

i’m not sure what it would mean that a system>reset solved it but that seems to have been the fix.

Any one using a expert sleepers fh1/2 for mifi to cv with fates?

I might give it a try with a usb hub, since i have the fh1 plus some expanders .

While not exactly the same, I’ve wanted to try the USB hub function on my Poly2. Only thing that has more or less pauses that is that I have a crow, so it’s not been the most useful concept.
