Got mine mostly working! I can’t seem to connect to wifi unfortunately, not sure what the problem is there, it can see my network, just won’t connect it seems. Hotspot doesn’t work either… Guess I’m going to need to pick up the UART-USB cable?

Grids works great and this thing sounds awesome, stoked!! case next…

:tada: :tada: :tada:

Give it a reboot or two and see if wifi gets sorted. I was having all sorts of problems with the hotspot on a plane the other day.

Ethernet is also an easy way to connect via wire (either to computer or maybe a router)

If you have any suggestions or notes to add to the build guide, please DM me.

By reboot you mean just unplug/plug power back in? I don’t see any buttons or switches on this thing  I actually just did that for the… fifth time or so and the hotspot fired up!! I was able to do the raspi-config stuff and reboot… Could access norns.local and all that so I guess thats enough really to play with it! I might dig into the logs a bit later and see what kind of errors wifi is throwing perhaps I can help…

Interestingly, norns doesn’t seem to save my wifi “adds” between power cycles, but then if I add it again, it shows the previous adds so in my case, scootinschool, scootinschool 1, etc…

Just rebooted again and hotspot not working… I’ll definitely see what I can find in the logs next time I can get in… Do you know where those might be located off the top of your head?

Ideally you should try to use the Norns menu and select SLEEP to shutdown, then pull the power and replug it.

If you have a network, then you can reboot over ssh with sudo reboot

pulling the power while it’s running is kinda of a harsh forced shutdown and could potentially cause issues with the system.

for wifi debug - maybe try journalctl | grep network ?

FWIW - this is also a problem on norns hardware

Thanks for the tips! Turns out most of the logs are in /var/log/messages and you can grep “whatever” * in /var/log to get some good results… The errors I see in there are mostly just “cant connect” kinda stuff, not really helpful… Anyway good to know it’s a known norns issue as well! I’ll keep working on it when I have the time…

Hotspot works now and then which is enough to load up my Fates with software, gonna play with it for a while now, thanks again @okyeron for your work making this thing happen, was stoked to get it to go! Power didn’t light up at first, had to flux the hell out of the usb C connector and resolder… that’s the tightest pitch soldering i’ve ever done but it worked after reflowing :cold_sweat: Anyway cheers  :champagne:

Update, got it kinda fixed, still need to investigate further why I now have to fire up a hotspot before my stored network connections will appear: Norns: help

One more update before bed, now upon booting up, wifi connects automatically just fine, i was able to run “update” and upgrade to 190930 just fine with no problems so far

Thanks for this! Ive forked and uploaded a version with the 4th encoder hole here:

I’m installing a small Li-Po charge controller and a 2500mah battery like the original. Ill let people know how that goes!

I’m hopefully going to run out and get a Pi tonight for the build. Local shop has 4B in stock, any sense in choosing 4gb over 2gb?

Not sure what to recommend. I have a 2GB. Don’t think the RAM amount will make much difference?

Any have an ALT for 485-2222 1 2x20 GPIO female header for RasPi Adafruit? Seems sold out

I got this but haven’t checked the fit yet - https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/harwin/m20-7832046/?qs=93uzuGORGqcTOAy6u%2blWXQ%3D%3D&countrycode=US&currencycode=USD

I just got like 100 of these from Tayda

https://www.taydaelectronics.com/2x20-pin-2-54mm-double-row-female-pin-header.html

I’ll check the data sheet height of the one james posted and compare it to the adafruit/Tayda ones and report back.

EDIT - That Harwin part from Mouser looks like it’s the right size (8.5mm tall).

I added that part to the BOM as an alternate. @jamesbretz please report back when you get yours.

I totally used one of the Tayda female 2x20 headers I had around for my fates build - everything is bang on. 11mm M-F spacer fits perfectly.

The spacer bit in the BOM was the only thing that didn’t make sense to me. Are the four 10mm F-F for the top piece of the case? If so, should two of those be M-F to screw into the 15mm F-F on the left side? Should there be four instead of two 3mm bits to get the left side of the PI better? Another 6mm spacer to go under the other corner of the display?

I skipped using two 3mm under the left side of the pi. Didn’t seem necessary since the header holds the pi pretty tight on that side.

10mm go on top - two on the right side, two on the back/top. 6mm go under the left corner of the display.

Does that help?

I need to do some documentation on this later today. Maybe a video.

Edit - looks like I got my F-F, M-F combos mixed up. Will update in a couple hours.

Rad, I got something that’s working - I was just a little confused at the time. Glad I had some spare m2.5 stuff on hand.

Standoff guide. This configuration is what I include with my acrylic cases.

You can use other combinations, but this worked for me.

Note - There’s no screw the top left corner of the display. It’s pretty hard to get a screw to fit there, so I don’t worry about it.

Does anyone have a measurement on the tayda/ada 2x20? Just want to see if this Harwin one is good before I drop it in.

I’m curious about which battery controller you’ve chosen? Is it possible to wire that up so that the battery charges up via the pre-existing usb power port on the pi? Or does th enclosure need a new port with direct access to the controller board?

Tayda 2x20 header - black plastic part - is 8.34mm tall x 4.91mm wide x 51.35 long

according to the data sheet for the Harwin, it should be just fine

Can confirm, works fine.

Github BOM and mouser cart (for spacers) have been updated for correct spacers. More docs updates later.

Note - I’m updating the github readme pages pretty often. If you’ve cloned the repo, do a fresh pull regularly.
