After plugging my Fates build in today, I found that I was having encoder issues… but only on the right most encoder. I can’t think of anything that changed but after looking at the encoder outputs on a scope, I noticed a LOT of switching noise coming from those encoders.
I pulled out some 0603 0.1uF SMD caps, soldered them in between the pins of the encoder, and tried it again.
And now that encoder is not having any issues at all!
I’m not sure if those are the best values, but they’re good enough for me to not have the volume of Haven glitch to 0.0dB and blast my ear drums.
I’m about to do the same to the other encoders now even though I haven’t seen issues on them. Switches get dirty over time and the SNR in our world is only getting worse so filtering sounds like a reasonable addition to any Fates build.
I included shots of my power supply, the parts I used, and my best attempt at the solder job.
I hope this helps someone!
EDIT: I should add: I was able to add these to the bottom of the board because I was lazy and didn’t trim the leads. BE CAREFUL if you need to do this on the top of the board! Don’t overheat those encoders!
