Amazing. Thanks for all that input. It actually helps improve my all ready mental grasp on Orac to begin with. Again, at times it feels like it defies explanation, and a built in HUD would go a long way to making it more palatable to someone like myself. I am really excited for this whole project and would love to get two FATES boards (if not more) when the project allows. Having one norns on a Pi3, one running Orac 2 would give a huge amount of potential for fun sound and interesting interaction methods!

yeah, im really interested in this ‘multi board’ type setup … its something ive quite a few ideas about (partly due to my background in distributed systems and comms i guess)

particularly , as ive now got orac running on my organelle and rPIs, but also in modules on my eurorack… now the distributed messaging that underlies orac (called mec/kontrol) becomes very interesting.
i see this as fun for a couple of reasons, but ‘obvious’ ones are… cross ‘module’ modulation/control - but also the concept of a command centre/control … where you start viewing the orac chains as distributed chains across hardware …
(this is also the route to how orac will become multi core on a single machine)

anyway, this won’t be modular specific , its about how to combine oracs (etc) running on different platforms what ever/where ever they may be

Mark, will Orac benefit from a Pisound, or will a Pi 3b+ suffice? I use Orac on an Organelle, but the CPU struggles with some patches

Cheers!

Congrats on the project @okyeron!
For sometime I would like to add a rPi to my setup; it seems these are becoming THE days
I always try to be as much as possible, supportive, as @TheTechnobear is aware (from Axoloti to mec to orac…)
Best of luck!

See, now I’m a little baffled; does Orac have the capability of running Organelle-Eddie patches on something like a RPi/FATES to generate sounds with a midi keyboard? Or only fascilitate native communication between multiple nodes?

Oops! Meant to say Organelle-esque patches! lol. But I’ll ping on the other thread!

orac can run multiple synths/fx, as modules - either controlled via midi or from its own sequencer modules. (not sure what Organelle-eddie is?!) the is the same on rPI/Fates on the Organelle ( e.g. see loopop demo )

a bit, as higher clock speed - but the real potential will be ‘unlocked’ once I get orac chains onto different cpu cores in the future.

anyway we are drifting off-topic, lets return to more fates specific discussions,
for orac questions you can ‘ping’ me this thread

Organelle patches are mostly Pure Data patches and should be able to run on almost any Raspberry Pi variant with some slight modification to controls.

Reporting back with regards to a fan for cooling…

While in theory, a fan will fit in the space between the encoders and pi ports,

But… it won’t fit there on the underside of the fates board because of the pi’s PoE pins and the camera connector. (I had considered adding some vent holes in the pcb right there if a fan would work)

It could fit directly on to top the processor, but that’s underneath enc2 so no real way to get proper ventilation there. Only a mm of clearance.

So - I’d say squeezing a fan in there (as an option) is not doable at this stage.

Get heatsinks.

Seems like you’d want to underclock then (or just use the cooler 3B).

Super psyched about this. Any idea on what the cost will be @okyeron?

ive been wanting to ask that for weeks but was afraid of sounding pushy… so thanks.

Not a clue (yet)!

Kinda joking… I really depends on what I decide to offer. PCBs will be available first. Then I need to get an idea of demand and see about boards with SMD already soldered (and if I can do those myself or what).

FWIW - The full BOM is $110-115-ish including a Pi

Perhaps a heatsink, with a fan that pulls the air over it … probably more feasible if you use a closed enclosure so can control the airflow ?!

Will do some experiments when my arrives (still waiting) … but I still expect even if underclocked considerably better performance than a rpi3

I’ll take too :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s my plan!!! (20 characters)

I managed to get hold of Pi4 and yes it is getting warm even with basic use. I have massive heatsink on it from Pimoroni but not sure how much it helps
I use it with powerbank and managed to power off Macbook Pro USB as well. No issues with that.

Does this include the Newhaven screen?

Yeah - the display and pi are the “big ticket” items (display is about $35).

Guess I could make a Mouser cart (once this usb-jack is finalized)

Case prototype! (Special “lines edition”)

New pcbs on Monday - which I hope will be the final candidate version. :crossed_fingers:

hopefully the production version will only have 8 slots  Can’t wait!
