Here’s a question I have and haven’t been able to clearly find an answer for elsewhere.

My Fates is built with a Pi 3B+

I have an official Pi Micro USB Power supply but I’d rather use the USB C Slot for power if possible. The Micro slot feels like it’ll come loose if I use it too much and it’d be handy to have all my cabling on one side of the machine. Would it be ok to use a Micro to USB C adaptor on my existing power supply to power Fates?

Update went smoothly on both pi 3b+ from 201115 to 201202. Not currently near an hdmi display to check output…

Yes, it’s fine. I do this on my pi3.

Reminds me, for anyone else who tends to order wrong stuff without looking carefully what connectors power supplies come with… Ordered the official Pi 4 power adapter for a Norns shield I built for a good friend, and obviously it doesn’t work because it’s USB-C… BUT it’s nice shape and size for Fates! Even if you use Pi 3b+ like I do, there’s the aforementioned USB-C connector on Fates board.

(Mostly running mine on a 20k mAh power bank, but for those moments I’m near an outlet, the Pi 4 supply is nice & compact)

Mines started saying on sleep - “ when the non-red light stops blinking disconnect power” weird
Everything seems to be fine and I remove the cable(really gotta get a proper psu for this

That’s great, thanks for letting me know!

so far 202102 is fine here, I have an HDMI display but need the adapter.

yeah I get this too. I really liked the single “sleep.” i want that as a tshirt.

Hi. I just built a fates, with a Raspberry Pi 4 B, 4x 1,5 GHz, 2 GB di RAM. Used the img file from Raspberry Pi 4b (200218 norns 2.2.9). The green lights has a 4 long, 4 short blinks, meaning Unsupported board type. Am I missing something?

It’s possible you have a newer Pi4 board revision (v1.2?) which requires a different/newer kernel.

I’ll DM you a download link for that image (I’ve not posted it anywhere because it’s not been widely tested yet)

Thanks! downloading it. Makes sense, since I just bought the pi4 from reichelt

Update ran fine on my pi4b rev 1.1. The encoders are jumpy, but they always have been so I think it’s probably a hardware issue. Gonna have to try the capacitor thing one day.

There’s a green led on the RPi3b and it will blink a few times before shutdown is finished. Pulling the power before this risks corrupting your SD card…

I had my Fates bite the dust a few weeks ago, bit frustrated with it and left it sitting for a while. I had some time this evening, wiped the SD card (I used the format on my DSLR, I found this trick on a raspi-pi forum years ago. Great for overcoming problems with partitioned sd cards) tightened down all the headers, touched up some solder points, downloaded a new image, flashed it, and was welcomed by dancing particles. I see this come up a lot, maybe try a fresh start if you’re running into a lot of problems. It’s a pain but seems to do the trick most of the time.

Still love my Fates, just spent most of the evening rediscovering some programs in the Norns library. Lots of fun, even just messing with Awake. Love to use it as my go to multi-fx box (thanks @21echoes!)

Is anyone of us fates users using a multiport MIDI controller properly?
I’m trying to use my old maudio uc33, as it should do both as a MIDI controller and as usb-midi interface but on different ports!

No idea here.

I suppose I could try plugging in my ancient MOTU Midi Express XT and see if it does anything.

EDIT - Just tried this and my old Midi Express XT is likely not a (fully) class compliant midi device. Linux doesn’t see it as a midi device at all.

FWIW - DM me with details from lsusb -v with the uc33 plugged in. I’m curious how it’s presenting itself. (This should be exactly the same on OG norns or Shield.)

I’ll send you a DM tomorrow, here is one AM.
Thank you!

I’m using the blokas midihub all the time with fates.
It populates 4 ins + 4 outs and working great.

I talked too early. Encoders are still jumpier than pre-update. I will try the capacitor hack and report.

Hello! I just flashed the SD card and had the disk full message when I try updating… How did you solve this? What/how do I connect via SSH?
Thanks
