Github BOM and mouser cart (for spacers) have been updated for correct spacers. More docs updates later.

Note - I’m updating the github readme pages pretty often. If you’ve cloned the repo, do a fresh pull regularly.

Smooth and easy build, still need to sort out the spacers but I forgot to order screws anyways. Probably just fire up the 3D printer and make a case now :sunglasses:

I have this on the way. Ill have to remove the USB ports to make it fit. Although since ordering ive read about some undervoltage issues with the Pi while the LiPo is also charging.

The charge controller needs to sit between the USB input and the rest of the board, so you would need to cut a trace on the PCB, or use a different USB port. You will also need to include a switch somewhere to disconnect the power.

Ive got a small micro-usb breakout pcb coming that should easily mount between the Pi and jacks. I’m not really looking into mounting options etc beyond this until ive built Fates and can test that the charge controller works

What is the USB breakout you got? That sounds interesting! For the last few weeks I’ve norns ‘bare’ and have just powered it from an external power brick.

The MP2636 board not provide enough power when is charging the battery.
According to this post, the board has to be modified (change a smd resistor) to make it usefull with the Pi.

Question - should Fates wake after sleep by holding K1?

Nope!

That’s a norns hardware specific feature.

Sleep basically shuts down the pi. On a pi3 “sleep” will stay on the display since it will still have power - as will the pi led. Pi4 will clear the display on shutdown (but pi led will stay lit).

(Unfortunately) Power cycling is less than ideal by unplugging/plugging usb power.

UPDATE:

New pcbs are in and I just built a test. :+1: SMD-assembled boards arrive tomorrow. I need to sort out a testing procedure, so it will likely be middle of next week before I put them up in the shop. Parts for kits are coming in, but those will take some time to assemble and will trickle out as available.

I will be emailing anyone who previously filled out the express interest form and they will have a head start for ordering. I’ll open-up/restock the public shop page for bare pcbs sometime this weekend.

For your amusement - Fates build in one minute!

If anyone from Germany wants to order a pcb just let me know. We could share the shipping costs (~15$)

Yes, I already indicated interest in a (complete as possible) kit and am from Germany/Bremen. So I would appreciate sharing the shipping cost. But I might have to wait some more time until its available…

Hi, I also expressed interest in a kit and am based in Berlin. Would be cool to do one shipment, at least also the potential costs for customs could then also be shared as there is an initial fee as well if it gets taxed and in the last two years everything I ordered from the US ended up in that DHL/customs hell. I am fine with paying import tax and VAT but the process is just really tedious for end customers.

Hey thanks for your replies.
I´m only interested in a pcb or two. okyeron told me that the shipping costs for 1 to 5 pcbs are around 15$.
I´ll ordering the parts (~75€ without the pi) anyway so if someone is interested, I could order them for you too.

Hi @doomglue,

ok, great. I suggest we’ll get in touch as soon as the kits become available and talk about how we’ll organise that.

My Fates build went pretty well despite some bridging and subsequent hellish rework on the DSP chip.

I printed a case that was shared earlier in this thread by @frankchannel after modifying it to fit the USB jack on the back. Thanks for sharing that, Frank.

So far absolutely loving this lovely little machine, thanks @okyeron for pouring so much into this.

Are you willing to share the modified 3D files?

Happy to, if that’s OK with @frankchannel.

and so its done… Orac for norns and a few extras

see this thread

I consider a kind of beta, as Ive a couple of minor issues to resolve, but thought its best to get it into others hands for feedback that can influence its direction.

anyway, I just wanted to pop by this thread to thank @okyeron for getting an early fates board to me, so I could realise this.

The FATES board has been fantastic, it was an easy board to build and the instructions that @okyeron has done for setting it up are absolutely brilliant - anyone thinking about it should ‘give it a go’, its a really simple and fun DIY project.

also thanks to Steven for some early feedback on Orac etc…

That’s great, thank you!

Amazing! Hope to give this a spin on my FATES over the next few days! Glad I built mine with a 4th knob. My biggest curiosities about the system moving forward is the method of moving from the Norns environment to ORAC. Very interested to see what you’ve done and would be happy to give some feedback (lord knows I have opinions about things)
