I believe @okyeron said he was going to publish the source files in a little while – if I were you I’d wait until that time and modify the board layout to accommodate the jacks you prefer…

The spec’d 1/8" jacks are 10mm wide. You’d be hard pressed to fit 4 of those 1/4" jacks in the space available on the back - and they’d block out the space for the headphone jack.

Once upon a time I found a fairly thin 1/4" jack, but didn’t save that anywhere I can find right now.

latest update: norns does not load, orac does…

as per orac post - its working fine here (both orac and norns)

is this the ‘normal’ supercollider failed error?
if so, id suggest the usual troubleshooting stuff

really you need a bit more detail to find out what the error really is, this is best done by starting scsynth manually from the command line, and seeing what errors it throws up.
(perhaps this can also be seen in maiden? i know know as i don’t use maiden  )

it’s probably a corrupted download. It seems that I need to do fresh install with fates image

I’d suggest doing that on a new sd card maybe? Also back up your old dust directory.

Fates image is a couple versions old for norns right now. I’ll work on updating those over the weekend.

I don’t have any extra sd. Why is that? I could format the one I’ve got.

SD cards go bad surprisingly often, especially with the heavier use they get as boot storage. It’s not at all uncommon for you to write the correct data to a card and get incorrect data back off it from time to time.

It really depends on if you want a backup of the machine as it was - with whatever scripts you’d already installed, etc.

SD cards are cheap so easy to do a new install on a fresh one. If you don’t have a spare, it’s not really a big deal either way.

Before reformatting to a fresh image, I’d suggest trying the update procedure once more.

SSH or FTP to Fates and delete the `/home/we/version.txt` file
do RESET from the norns menu or `sudo reboot`
run UPDATE from the norns menu
start up again and you should have the most recent version of norns.

are you back from Japan? How was it?

Yes I am. Japan was awesome as always.

TFoM was also pretty cool - met up with a few folks and had some great conversations during the event. The DIY workshop was really great and we got 4 kits built there.

Finally catching up on tasks, so I will have an update email out to my Fates “express interest” list here very soon.

I’m just wondering if I should be ordering some 1x 1/8 stereo female to 2x 1/8 mono male adapters? For example if a want to sample/loop my Volca FM? Or 1/8 to 1/4 mono to output to my mono mixer…

And I’ve yet to buy a usb sound interface or digital field recorder … or can I just record in fates somehow? (Given I have a fairly minimal setup arm)

That sounds like stupid questions?

I guess I’m interested in how people are connecting norns into there setups cabling wise?

Anyone able to check if airplane headphone adapters fit into fates input/outputs?

dunno what that airplane headphone adapter looks like… picture?

I bought a couple of these mono to stereo adapters which are good to go to/from my H1 recorder.

I think there was some cable discussion further up thread.

I missed the earlier posts.

Airplane adapters are 2x mono male at 1/2 inch spacing? (I just measured with a plastic mm ruler) with a stereo female typically on the side. They might work if the fates inputs/outputs happen to be at 1/2inch spacing?

Else I’ll order some of those adapters.

Thanks again, can’t wait to get my fates.

Fates Audio jacks are 0.44in apart - might work.

Just popping in to say: received, soldered, installed and running!!!

thanks @okyeron (and the rest of you!) for making this build and install painless on my end… Thank you @tehn and all the collaborators on this project, the open spirit of monome and this community!

I hope that I can bring something to the rest of the Norns community after I do my homework and when life settles down a bit…

I posted an update on the Fates Commerce Thread. Please follow that thread for updates on Kit availability, etc.

I also sent out a mailing list email to those who had filled out the “express interest” form awhile back. If for some reason you didn’t get that - please check your spam folder. Or you can always send me a DM here.

Anybody get a high noise floor when directly chaining the audio of 2 FATES?

Huh… I never tried that. Whats your test situation there?

EDIT: Just did a quick test and I’m not hearing anything out of the ordinary with the main outs from one into the inputs of two.

I wanted to daisy chain two FATES in terms of audio, so, I have my rack audio go in to FATES one, which then would run something effects related, then the audio OUT would go to FATES two, which would run something like mlr. But when I take audio out of FATES 1 in to FATES 2, I get a pretty significant amount of noise. This photo shows the experiment:
