I guess we need more detail about “locking up”…

  • Are you talking the norns software is getting stuck/non-responsive?
  • Can you still SSH to the pi when it’s stuck?
  • Does the pi work normally when disconnected from the Fates board?

Mouser, specifically, have the PEC11R-4015K-N0024 (knurled shaft, 15mm length) in stock (qty. 852 :D). It’s listed in the docs (on the BOM, IIRC) as an alt part. I ordered them, but I can’t say any more than that as I haven’t built mine yet.
FWIW, I ordered 450-AA192 knobs to go along - hopefully they’ll fit well ¯_(ツ)_/¯ You’ll want to be careful ordering caps if you go with those knobs - the knobs have a little ridge inside the top, so the cap needs a notch. I ended up having to hack on the caps a little to make them go.

tyty. I figured both was probably a non-starter :stuck_out_tongue:

So the behaviour is occasionally the Raspi will not boot when I plug it in. I will get a red power indicator but no activity LED. I found this happens most often from powering from the USB C on the Fates PCB. Sometimes plugging directly into the mini-usb on the Pi corrects it. Today it wouldn’t boot at all. I just dissembled the case and booted the Pi without Fates and this seems to have fixed the problem.

Just wondering what could cause these intermittent lock ups?

Maybe a bad connection (or short) somewhere with regards to power?

Nice case! were did you get it?

Thanks! A friend printed it out for me at her university. Here is the design I used. https://github.com/coreyker/fates3d_case

Hi- I’m having the same issue with the red power LED lighting up but nothing on the activity LED- I had Fates booting up properly and running smoothly earlier in the evening but I’m worried maybe I shorted something by accident. I don’t have a case yet so my fear is i may have bumped something or touched two points I shouldn’t have.
The LED status is the same if the Fates board is detached, even if I’m trying to boot the rPI on its own with just power and microSD connected. I’m worried the rPi is busted but tbh more worried that maybe the Fates is busted too.
Any thoughts? My instinct is to go pick up another rPi and give it another go.

similar to my setup, need a second grid

Awesome looking setup. Can I ask where you sourced your inline USB-C switch cables?

I also saw the Pi 3 version when I was at Target the other day FWIW

I think they’re USB micro B, since they connect to the pi directly. Adafruit has them for $5.95

Its this one:

I think there are some kits, where they sell the pi, psu and sd card.

They are handy since they have a on | off switch button.

Alright I’m just about ready to pull the trigger on Fates (complete kit and microSD card) and a Pi, but I have some basic questions:
Is there any reason to get one Pi version over another? I should have everything I need with the kit, pi, case, and appropriate power cable correct? Should I invest in some heat sinks for my pi?

Edit: sorry if these are obvious questions. I’ve skimmed the thread a few times but never exactly found an answer.

a rPI3b+ , this has the same ‘cpu power/memory’ as a monome norns.
rPI3 seems to be fine without heatsinks

but you could go for a rPI4. its quite a bit more powerful.
however, it consumes more power/generates more heat - so id recommend getting a heat sink.
there are variations in how much RAM they have, all are fine.

psu - get one that’s recommended for the rPI you buy , i think its 2.5a for rPI3, and 3a for rPI4.

if you only want to run norns, then the rPI3b+ is enough.

but the rPI4 is great, very powerful, lots of interesting things to explore with it in the future

Thanks James, that’s the one I have too, I got it from CanaKit along with the power supply. It works very nicely, and I kind of like the little power led. I haven’t seen any in-line USB-C power cables available easily in the US, that’s why I was wondering.

Thanks Gerald, I love the micro B ones and use them a lot for music tech gear that has USB power and no power switch! I’ve suggested to Limor that we source a USB-C version to carry at Adafruit.

would there be any benefit to getting an rPi 4 for ORAC?

A couple of troubleshooting suggestions:

  • try to boot the pi by itself, disconnected from the Fates board.
  • see if you can SSH to the pi
  • if you can, then we might be in software debugging-land (which may be better in a private message thread)
  • if you can’t, then it may be a problem with the SD card - so try another card if possible. Last resort - reflash the SD card from the fates image.

Here’s a big page of info on Raspberry Pi LED status messages. Try figuring out which status message you’re getting (or not getting)
