Hi all, thought that I’d pipe in re: micro sd cards. Not all cards are built the same. Even if it’s the same size (say 32g) its read/write speed can be different as can their class. Try to avoid the off brand cheap ones unless you’ve had good luck with a specific brand.

I’ve had good luck with the sandisk ultra 32gb class 10 micro sd cards in my pi projects. They tend to give me less headaches with file corruption than other cards I’ve tried in the past.

@okyeron, correct me if I’m misremembering, but the norns disk image only boots on FAT formatted cards? If so, it’s not worth getting anything larger than a 32gb card, as exFAT formatting won’t work.

Not sure. I know you can’t read an exFAT formatted thumbdrive

See here for more on sd card specs

this is true, but it’s not particular to norns. AFAIK the pi bootloader can’t use exFAT, and in general it’s rare to see “out of the box” support for it in linux systems, because microsoft owns a patent on exFAT and implementing it legally requires paying them license fees. (so you usually have to install a package on top of the base OS.)

if you want to be a power user with a big SD card you could format the boot partition as FAT and a data partition as ext3 or some other linux-friendly FS.

Yeah I tried it with multiple power supplies and as cards and stuff and ended up just getting an rPi 4 to replace it. I’ll keep the old board in case I figure it out but the fresh one with the updated image booted right up so I’m nearly positive the old one is dead. Just gotta get this new one cased up to avoid this problem in the future.

Finally got my Fates dressed up today. I would highly advise against using M3 hardware, it doesn’t fit the Pi and I had to 3D print some spacers to account for some of the stand-off sizes I couldn’t source.

Hey. Are these diy arc knobs printed? If so, would you mind to share the 3d file?
What’s the little box (which is connected to the mic) doing?

They are, but fitment was difficult to say the least. I’ll try to get the files up this weekend.

Update - files are here

The small box is just a 3.5mm stereo to mono, a few thonkiconns on some protoboard in a printed snap case.

What is the DIY Arc? Where might one get one of these looks so cool!

When i want to flash my sd card i keep on getting the following message:

Something went wrong. If it was a compressed image, check that the archive is not corrupted.

I tried the various img files of github but nothing works  (i use Belena Etcher)

Hmmm… I had some issues with the most recent pi4 image not being abie to expand the disk, but etcher still wrote it ok. The older image still tested ok tho.

What OS are you on (mac/win) and what version of etcher? Which pi do you have?

See https://github.com/balena-io/etcher/issues/2835#issuecomment-554686909

Im using the newest mac os and the newest Etcher (mac 10.15.1 Etcher 1.5.67)
Im trying to flash for the pi4 and tried both img files of your github. I will try the terminal fix once im home and will report back on it.

I just checked and etcher is now v1.5.68 - try downloading the most recent version.

I don’t have a machine running Catalina so it’s hard for me to test that.

For the pi4 - I’d suggest using the older of the 2 images for now. I’ll try to do more testing later, but it’s a very busy work week for me.

Hi,

another newbie question. Am I doing something wrong when ordering this Raspberry Pi (Pi 4 Modell B 4GB SDRAM) to complete my soon arriving Fates kit? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Ok, main question answered after I checked the initial thread posting but still: how much RAM is advisable?

@mbutz I am still catching up, but from what I understand you are getting the most high spec’d rpi that currently exists and it should not be a problem. Technobear is also developing on this rpi from what I gather reading the threads.

Edit: to your edit  the more ram the better. It will run perfectly fine in the 1GB model and it is easy to swap it out. That being said… to be future proof, there might be orac patches from the community in the future that could require more system resources.

Downloading the newest newest Etcher worked. Thx for looking with me it works great now

I got lucky and the Fates board is booting right up with the new rPi 4… phew. just going to let it sit in the corner until my case arrives so I don’t chance anything else happening to it.

Good call. I’ve had mine without a case for months. Two days ago i put my running FATES on top of my desk, not seeing the scissors. Shorted out the pins that would handle encoder 2. Had to swap out the Pi. Luckily I have a pile of them from a previous project, but it was still a reminder that it’s relatively delicate.

IIUC, the only concern with the 4s is heat; I beleive that the current recommendation is to make sure to get good heat sinks

probably the easiest build I’ve done yet (out of ~14 euro modules and an Anushri). I’m definitely glad I went with the pre-soldered SMD - my last such project (0805, even!) was torture, and a near-disaster.
kudos to @okyeron for doing the heavy lifting and making an amazing thing! (and to @tehn and co., of course  )

seems like people are having difficulty getting decent power, so here are snaps of the power supply solution I stumbled across. I’m not clear on the rules re: naming specific commercial entities and their products, but I’ll say the the white cable came from a big red office supply store, is an in-house brand, has model #NX54702 and IIUC can be ordered online ~$15US. it’s quite sturdy, very thick for a USB cable (due to the braided covering I imagine) but still quite supple. it also comes with a nice silicone “keeper”. I found the Wall-Wart in the checkout line at a similarly-named big-box store (yellow and blue) for ~$4US, and that after looking at nearly everything in their electronics dept. It puts out 5V2.4A when a single port is in use, and has those nifty folding prongs (unfortunately, I tossed the packaging as soon as I got home, so the only info I have is what’s printed on it).

Good point. Didn’t think of that before and ordered some heat sinks. Thanks.
