Yes! I would start with looking for solder bridges and shorts between the header pins fates board. If the pi is booting (red light with green showing activity) when separated from the fates board, but not when attached, then there is very likely that you have a short somewhere

Can you post a picture of the norns MIX page showing levels?

Also - Where are you located? (Would it make sense to send it to me for debugging?)

Thanks for the help!

Went slightly overboard, and replaced the Pi Header, before eventually spotting a bridge on the DAC. Cleared the bridge, and have managed get WiFi setup on Norns, and executed the updates as per the install guides (inc the new update process to run manually). Alas, haven’t managed to clear the ‘Supercollider Fail’ error yet tho… from reading earlier in the thread, not sure if there may be further funk I’ve missed on the DAC, or another issue.

Still, a step forward - thanks again for the assistance

To be clear - did you run the norns update from the norns SYSTEM menu? If so, that’s bad and you’ll need to reflash the card from the beginning again.

Install instructions have most recent images which do not need updates. (updated just now for correct version number)

FWIW - Supercollider Fail can sometimes clear up after a restart. That’s not likely related to hardware.

Thanks sir - no, update was run from the terminal following the updated instructions, not from the Norns menu.

Half restarted half a dozen times (inc the reboots during the installs), but not managed to clear the fail.

I did run the SCLang command, mentioned much earlier in the thread, and suggested some fails there, perhaps? Results were:

This is Awake and it’s related settings.
It’s running and should be making sound, but I’m not even getting a display of output in the monitoring page.
Unfortunately I’m in Australia so I’m hoping to get it sorted here before having to post anywhere.

I just don’t get why an app like awake won’t make sound but something like bounds will process incoming audio. Especially when everything was making sound before replacing the DAC

Jack is not running or starting properly. Not sure why.

dmesg from the command line (ssh) can be good to look at to see if the dac is initializing.

How are you checking the left and right outputs? and have you tried swapping the left and right cables (or plugs if you are using a splitter?) and with the fates UNPLUGGED and UNPOWERED, have you tested the resistance of each channel with a multimeter? You could use a mono to mono cable (or even a trs to trs) and put the multimeter across the tip and sleeve. Resistance of each channel should be about the same, I’ll try check mine tonight.

(Update: The two output channels should have a resistance a hair over 46kohms.)

Also have your tried reflashing your SD card and/or swapping SD cards? Good quality SD cards and good power supply’s seems to be key to keeping Pi’s happy.

Happy to report my Fates has come to life.

I went over it again late last night with a loupe, and discovered I’d created a fresh bridge in clearing the original which had had shorted the power. :disappointed:
That said, first time I’ve soldered an SMD chip, so it’s been good experience!!

Thanks again for the help and support in bringing it to life.

Now, to learn how to play it…

i had similar problem before, and turns out it was a power issue. i was using reguler usb power adapter for charging phone, then i switch to adapter that has spec 5V 2A and everything back to normal.

Anybody have some particularly fun or quality knob sources? Been wanting to get better looking and feeling knobs for my build.

Also, as a fun bit, @Smoth helped build some fantastic metal cases:

Looks like the site is down temporarily but Thonk has d-shaft sifam knobs i believe in black, white, and gray with encoder (blank, no pointer line) tops for them. I’m getting some gray ones to (hopefully) match my gray buttons

And with an incoming sale no less!

Oh wow! These are fantastic!

What standoffs did you use? I’ve not yet got my case put together.

I used the same as listed on the FATES github. It has the same internal spacing and tolerance as the acrylic FATES cases. Was yours powder coated as well? I hope you enjoy the Spice Orange we opted for. The desire was to pay homage to the fun play fullness of Teenage Engineering equipment by referencing the ever desired limited edition Space Orange GameCube:

Thanks! Yes. I went with the orange powder coat. I was thinking orange soda and hazy IPAs

It seems tricky to get hold of the OLED at the moment without shipping from the US. has anyone tried the other alternatives or know whether these would work? e.g yellow one without backlight apparently
or this one which differs slightly in the interface

Had the same problem and found nothing. I ordered this one: https://www.digikey.de/product-detail/en/newhaven-display-intl/NHD-2.7-12864WDY3/NHD-2.7-12864WDY3-ND/7355952

It was shipped within two days to germany. Total price was 58€ :face_vomiting:.

These look amazing! Is there a website?
