Hi @mbutz, you can add Midi clock sync to a script. Here is an example:

Maybe just use to USB Midi interfaces and a DIN Midi cable? If you have already an interface, you would need only a second on (a small and cheap on like MIDIFACE II THRU 1×1).

Okay, thanks. I have already a USB2Midi-Adapter (similar to this one) which i can use e. g. to connect Fates to my 0-Coast. So as far as I see the idea is to use this to connect to the MIDIFACE which in turn goes into my laptop via USB.

I have no idea whether this works but maybe ti is worth a try. Has anyone a working setup like that?

I just have set up a test scenario. I connected a Steinberg UR22 MK2 Audiointerface (with DIN Midi I/O) to an iPad (Midi Host). Fates (Midi Host) is connected via USB to an ESI MidiMate eX USB-MIDI Interface. The DIN Midi Connectors of the MidiMate eX are plugged into the DIN Midi I/O of the UR22 MK2.

With this setup I can receiving Midi clock sync from Fates the iPad but also sequence a Midi receiving synth script on Fates like Passersby with an app on the iPad. So this should work for your setup too.

I’m not (jet) into Sonic Pi, otherwise I would use this setup to send and receive Midi to and from Fates.

Hmmm… interesting. BTW that code looks fine, have you tried Tools > USB Type > Midi
instead of “Midi + Serial”. I think I’ve seen it mentioned that Norns thinks that some Serial devices are Crow devices. Otherwise you could check lsusb and watch dmesg when you connect directly…

@JaggedNZ yes i made sure its only midi, not midi + serial
Thanks!

So, I’ve been doing some work to figure out where some noise is on a FATES board of mine. Now, I have 2 boards working, and am using two different Pi’s one using a 3B+ and one using a 4. I was having noise on one of my boards, and to figure out what was happening, swapped the Pi’s. Turns out my Pi 4 is causing a bit of ground noise! Same plugs, same everything. Turns out the noise floor follows the Pi, not the board. Any thoughts on what would cause ground noise with a Pi 4 and how to limit that?

Power going into the Fates USB-C or the Pi USB-C? Try the other way round and see if that changes it?

Already did, same effect. Interestingly, if I record to tape I get that same noise. So, its not about the I/O’s, not about the different boards, its something going on with the Pi itself.

I wonder what the deal is, but at that point I’m just looking at having to replace the Pi, huh?

you might do some searching on the raspberry pi forum for ground loop related issues?

Have done some further testing, and have been able to limit the amount of noise with a different (read: more expensive) usb wall plug.

My yellow OLED from DigiKey unexpectedly turned up a couple of days ago!

Unfortunately, I forgot to order the 4th encoder, but I now have everything else I need to finish my build.

Nice! Will it have that rad yellow Elektron look?

Mouser has white displays and encoders back in stock this week.

Yellow OLEDs are pretty cool (and all look pretty similar).

A new Fates is born!

I’m using the RPi from my Norns Shield, as I forgot to buy a PSU for my RPi 4B, and don’t have a USB-C cable I can use to power it from my laptop.

Also forgot to order the 4th encoder. Oops.

Everything seems to work, and the yellow OLED is really nice.

Looking good!

FWIW - You’re totally fine powering via the Pi power input.

Powering from a computer’s USB-C can sometimes be problematic, so yeah - a dedicated power supply is recommended.

You can also leave the 4th encoder off completely and it won’t cause any issues (unless you want to use ORAC)

That’s cool. I have a micro USB PSU for the RPi 3B+ I’m using for the Norns Shield, just no USB-C one for the the Pi 4B I bought for Fates. One should be delivered today, anyway, so all will be well (thanks to Amazon).

I was planning to install ORAC, so I will be needing the extra encoder.

ORAC installed and working (except for the absence of the 4th encoder).

That Newhaven OLED really does look lovely…

Off-topic, but @okyeron have you tried making a display window for your case? I’d love to give it a go, but do you happen to have the exact size of the display cutout, so I could have one cut?

I’ve cut a few press-fit screen protector/windows, but need more clear material.

However, I think the sizing will be variable depending on the specific laser settings (and the cut-width aka “kerf”). So if you’re ordering from a service provider, this is maybe 50/50 to work.

I’ve got one sized that works well when I cut my cases, but only like 3 out of 4 fit properly snug (the other often being too loose).

Really? You have some pictures of that please
