Actually I’ve been experiencing a weird behavior on the third encoder of my fates as well. It’s very jumpy unless I turn it really slow. I’ve yet to try another power supply since mine is very similar to this one

Yeah. What I’m seeing is with quick turns. Debouncing sounds like a good solution.

Hi,
I had this with a faulty or bad soldered dac chip

Maybe worth checking :thinking:

I have the exact same problem with mine, it’s not useable anymore at all since the value of encoder 3 jumps all the time. I use the official Pi usb-c power supply, on a smt pre-soldered board. I’ll try to replace the encoder when I have some free time (need to order a new one first).

If your encoder(s) has “detents” the following change may help:

In the device overlay I changed all of the encoder settings from
rotary-encoder,half-period;
to
rotary-encoder,full-period;

You have to reboot after that.

I tried this with no luck. My board is also pre-soldered and the encoder solder joints look fine. Maybe I need to order another encoder.

Oh, this overlay seems useful, where could I find it? Cheers!

I haven’t kept up with recent changes, so this could be outdated – but, this is what I did:

In the files:

/home/we/fates/overlays/fates1.7-buttons-encoders-overlay.dts

and

/home/we/fates/overlays/fates1.7-buttons-4encoders-overlay.dts

I changed all instances of:

rotary-encoder,half-period;

to:

rotary-encoder,full-period;

Then recompile the overlays:

sudo dtc -W no-unit_address_vs_reg -@ -I dts -O dtb -o /boot/overlays/fates-buttons-encoders.dtbo /home/we/fates/overlays/fates1.7-buttons-encoders-overlay.dts

sudo dtc -W no-unit_address_vs_reg -@ -I dts -O dtb -o /boot/overlays/fates-buttons-4encoders.dtbo /home/we/fates/overlays/fates1.7-buttons-4encoders-overlay.dts

And reboot. This change makes encoders with detents much more useable.

After F*ing up my Fates by blindly go to the “update” screen, I redownloaded the image and then applied the update manually (SFTP + SSH) and everything worked!
Thanks for the update!

Best triple check the soldering on your display header and Raspberry pi header, look carefully for dry joints and bridges.

Some of the audio jacks and headphone jacks look like they might be dry and could use a tad more solder, but hard to tell for sure in your photo.
Post photos of your soldering if you want pointers. Taking a photo in good lighting and zooming in is a reasonable substitution for an inspection microscope.

This opposite side of the board here would be more helpful

Also a view of the 2x20 pi header from the top would help

Also also - which pi? Did the screen display ok before the system update problem? Make sure hdmi cable is unplugged when trying to troubleshoot the oled display.

Manage to get it working now, been using the wrong disk images all the time and the screen is also a bit loose. Thank you for the help :slight_smile: .

What’s the difference between these images and the ones posted on 18 Feb? Would SYSTEM > UPDATE deliver the same result?

They should be the same if you have been following the updates. These images have the new fates safe update process so they will be easier for new users and anyone who needs to reflash their SD cards

Prior to the 200218 update SYSTEM > UPDATE would brick your Fates. The 200218 update fixes that problem. After you update to 200218 future updates should work via SYSTEM > UPDATE

The most recent disk images give you the same result as the manual update to 200218.

I often can’t receive any audio from apps, it always took several reboot to get it working. It happened most of the time is this a normal issue?

Hello
I just finished my build last night
It works but …
I can’t get the memory card to expand when I ssh to the pi
I am using a raspberry pi4

and this sd card
I tried reflashing still no success
Any help would be appreciated
Also…
Was I supposed to have the raspberry pi up and running with an os before I installed the fates /Norns disk image ?

Are you on a Mac by any chance? If so you could try flashing with ApplePiBaker which has a setting to auto expand the image.

Could be there’s an issue with the disk image. I’ll check on that today
