anyone have experience with arturias delay tape 201?

considering it because it is currently on sale down to $50 and i will almost never surely have the real thing. i have ableton suite so i would want it to do significantly more than i can do w native ableton devices (saturator+echo for example).

For $50 you can buy a world class tape delay in Valhalla Delay, plus a ton of other world-class delays. More versatile, better pedigree, gorgeous sound even the pros use. Highly recommended.

I agree… Since I have it I hardly use any other delays and it used to be the type of plugins I switched the most.

I would say that everything Acustica Audio is doing is amazing for mixing. If you don’t know them, they basically have this technology where they sample hardware dynamically. I wanted to pick up some hardware recently and I actually preferred their plugins to most units I tested. They have a huge catalogue and I own most of it, but I mostly use Water, Viridian and Ebony.

Seconded. I also really like Soyndtoys’ Echoboy Jr., which is probably not as versatile as Valhalla Delay but has a bit different character and the different modes might be closer to what somebody looking at modelled vintage tape delay is after. It may all be based mostly on the different GUI styles, but for me Valhalla Delay is the tool for crazier, out of this world sound design and Echoboy Jr. for more simple and traditional ’vintage’ character delay. It also goes regularly on sale for $49. Both are great, but if I had to pick one it would probably be Valhalla.

If you want something even cooler delay-wise, check out Modnetic by Surreal Machines

Valhalla sounds better, more realistic, has more modes. The Arturia is one is very boring.

I have the Arturia 3 Delays You’ll Actually Use pack, and Tape-201 really is pretty decent. The fun IMHO is in overdriving it and/or pushing the parametric EQ. Eternity is also kind of neat for its design, though I didn’t find myself using it as much. Memory Brigade is the only one of the three I’d say approaches “boring”, though the chorus/vibrato is all right.

That said, I’m selling those, along with NI Replika XT and Colour Copy, in favor of Valhalla and hardware. Replika XT is a good plugin too – it’s got a bit more rhythmic interest on tap than the others – and Colour Copy can sound pretty lush when modulated. I just prefer Valhalla Delay overall.

I do wish Valhalla Delay offered a bit more noisiness and grunge. I kind of want a noisy PT2399 or unfiltered BBD delay again, but what with Mimeophon, Adineko and both an E520 and Disting EX on the way, I think I’d feel silly buying another hardware delay…

Don’t you think the Ghost Mode with a lot of drive acheives decent untamable noises? I quite like that one for the type of sounds you described. It was one of the modes I used the less at first but now I’m growing more and more fond of it.

Also good to remind everyone that despite it’s simple name, Valhalla Delay is actually all 3 Arturia delays (and more!) in one simple yet complete interface that offers more clarity (because Valhalla interfaces are amongst the best in the plugin world). You just switch modes and you’ve got all the delays you’re after. For what it offers the price is absurd.

Try Soundtoys PrimalTap (Lexicon Prime Time) and Eventide H910 (old digital delay used on Bowie’s Low - the pitched snare for example - and AC/DC Back in Black (also snare)).

Not especially, at least not of the kind I’m looking for

The E520 has a Prime Time mode that I’m looking forward to trying…

Primal Tap is my secret sauce. Set a crisscross to 2000 & 2500 and the multiplier to 8x and kiss your afternoon goodbye :kissing_heart:

You nailed it! Although more Qubit Nebuale for the Granular. Also some influence from the Monome Arc for the physical simulation and lfo xy controls, oh and Rene for the sequencing

I finally checked out Lossy due to the high praise found here and, wow, it absolutely nails the unique flavors of garbage that I experienced growing up in the 90’s. I love the “packet loss” setting, and am actually using it on a TV spot where one of the talent is on a Zoom call. We’re comping the zoom call together, and I’m using Lossy to approximate the, uh, lovely experience of streaming audio on a less than perfect connection.

Also, I made a little YouTube thing where I explore Cycles from the perspective of using it to reimagine guitar parts and transform them into something else. If you skip a couple minutes in, you can hear a bunch of different sounds that are all generated from the same guitar loop. Hope you enjoy!

Just purchased ample sounds hellrazer vsti (a ludicrous 9 string virtual guitar). It has wowed me so far and is great for chucking down ideas quickly. And sounds brilliant.

OK, you had me at Nebulae as an inspiration, as someone who’s been looking for the best “Nebulae in software” for some time now. Gonna finally take some time to check this out. <3

I just did this and you are correct. The sun is setting. Thank you.

I didn’t see anyone mention it yet, so has anyone tried out Output’s Portal granular effect? Steep price (for me), but looks like it might be a good one.

Did they make a synth version? I’ve got the FX for a super cheap price at some point so I couldn’t resist and I quite like it. I agree it’s not worth 150€ when you consider something lile Valhalla delay is 50, and overall I think most of ouput’s offers are slightly overpriced. But I use it often enough to get myself out of creative holes because it’s just very fun and well tuned, and it’s got a nice combo of features that makes it easily tweakable lile built in lfo, x/y pad, good granular engine, scales…
