once in a blue moon, I use RBass on kick or bass for metal or hardcore mixes but almost never for anything else. I usually find that the actual sub sounds much better than an enhanced one and all ya have to do is HP the other stuff that would be masking it on other tracks. they’re good to have when your source is weak though

re subharmonic synthesis, I use LowEnder plugin for (film) sound design, not so much for music…
It was the first plugin to emulate the dbx 120 subharmonic synth, which i still have in a rack somewhere.

(only caveat, have to be careful with amount of subharmonics or it can cloud natural harmonics eg during a film mix i remember rerecording engineer dialing it up too much on a double bass line & it started to sound like every note played was a chord)

LowEnder is the one I’m familiar with too. There’s also an Eventide H3000 plugin that can generate bass frequencies and many other things, and there’s a Brainworx version of the dbx 120.

You can also try this trick with an analog eq, which is my preferred method.

I would at least get standard. Being able to use reference music is awesome. What I’m currently doing is trying to reference my favorite finished song on my new album when mastering a new song: trying to approach it like I’m making sure they all sound relatively the same mix-wise.

After a lot of hesitation I came across the Arturia V Collection for a price I felt like I couldn’t turn down. Because I had picked up my NI Kontrol S25 secondhand from a friend I had no idea what it could do besides be a very nice controllwe keyboard. Loading the Arturia instruments via Komplete Kontrol and having all the controls automatically mapped to the dials of the S25 absolutely blew my mind. I’m sure it’s not news to many people as I’d guess it has been possible for a long time, but as somebody who literally encountered it for the first time today it’s pretty astounding!

I’m really glad @jlmitch5 made me find out about Can Opener Studio 3!
I have just gone througfh a lenghy and complicated mixing process for my upcoming first proper album and I kept running into issues with the panning.
I find the strereo sprectral visualizer really, really handy for that! For me it was essential.
Also It’s full of small useful tricks and their monitor simulation is really pleasant (much less hearing fatigure) and useful.

Had you tried any other monitor-sim plugins? I’ve been using Isone, and it helps when I have to mix on headphones (and as. a check since my room acoustics absolutely suck) - and also for producing a separate “only listen on headphones” mix. But I’m hearing so much lately about canopener and wondering if it’s significantly better.

I’m very attracted to this too, although utilising the iPad for MPE is attractive as a more immediate solution.

Have you got a method for that that you like, preferably not requiring much programming?

I love the Madrona Labs instruments, especially Aalto, and think MPE would be amazing with them

I don’t now how old or new this is, but Tokyo Dawn added custom EQ models to SlickEQ, my favorite EQ. It’s the only EQ plugin I’ve used for music work in the last few years. Seems like the update could potentially complicate what is otherwise a super straightforward plugin (which is the main reason I like it), but more features, right?

+1 on SlickEq. It’s such a joy to work with, and an ear opener for me. Haven’t yet upgraded to GE – I like the limitation of the 3 bands, but I’m sure I’ll be hooked by the workflow perks of the tilt filter soon after I upgrade. Either way, the free edition definitely qualifies as worth buying in my book.

I am loving mine. Great tool for Max as well and pairs nicely with the Expert Sleepers FH-2 for modular integration. I just wish Ableton would support MPE then it would be perfect :ok_hand:

Edit: and awesome for iOS apps which support MPE and there’s a ton of them

No, I’ve not explored it because I’m pretty committed to Ableton and, as yet, Ableton still doesn’t support MPE. The only MPE I’ve used so far has been directly via the iPad itself.
