You bet. It’s a wonderful project.

Edit: also in the free zone this week is a wonderful sample pack called Tape Haze 3 by blankfor.ms. You can snag it here: https://gumroad.com/l/tapehaze3/fs9hrj8

As I understand it, you need the full Kontakt version to take advantage of this.

I appreciate the link to Piano Book, @mattlowery! What an amazing project. Having mixed results so far though and I’m wondering if it’s because I’m using Logic’s ESX24 sampler rather than Kontakt.

I don’t have the full version of Kontakt, so I’ve been testing a few different samples that were offered for ESX24 but they are a bit disappointing so far - weird different sound levels, noise buildup, buggy behaviour where part of the keyboard would reset my sustain pedal.

You wouldn’t happen to have tried a sample set on there that you were happy with in Kontakt that were also offered in ESX24 format?

A Kontakt thread could be nice, there seem to be a bunch of knowledgable people here who could make it interesting, and Ind be curious to read it (I don’t have much to add I’m not a Kontakt wizard but it strikes me as a pretty deep software)

I do have it and i dig scriptorium which i got in the ancient days but what i was after was a nice sample approximation of a synthi – i know that sounds cliche’ now somehow but my first wow of synthesis was eno roxy stuff
but i grabbed

the “Attic2” stuff has some very nice synths" and i use geosonics for sound design a bunch

I’ll be honest with you, when I reach for a sampled piano it’s either Lekko or Una Corda, so I can’t recommend a particular library on piano book. As it’s community sourced, your mileage may vary.

I will say that there’s a phenomenal tutorial on the site about how to sample, and part of that tutorial is Christian walking through how to set the instrument up in EXS. Armed with that knowledge, you should be able to customize any of the instruments to your liking

I picked up the Olafur Arnolds Stratus plug-in from Spitfire last week, and it’s phenomenal.

Stratus has me so tempted but I’ve used up my music upgrades budget on modular stuff. No regrets, but between Albion Neo and Stratus, Spitfire has been testing my willpower.

Trying out Cycles this week. Holy smokes. It’s amazing. I’ve not fully grasped it, but what I’ve done so far has been super fun.

Puremagnetick has a few “buy a name-your-price album from bandcamp, and receive a free plug-in” things going on. An album from Arovane and someone with a more complicated name.

i’ve been drooling over over cycles for a few weeks now. this interface is absolutely beautiful. pardon for the naive question but would cycles ever be available as just the looper and granulator without the sample library? i am asking because they seem incredible but i am only interested in loading in my own samples. i would buy them in a heartbeat if they were available as stand alone instruments.

I’ve also been wishing for a demo license of Cycles but don’t see that as an option. It’s an expensive investment without at least the chance to try it out

i frickin loove the Neural DSP Plini https://neuraldsp.com/products/archetype-plini/
it’s a guitar amp and cabinet impulse response simulator, been driving guitar w/ pedals into it and it really sounds amazing. this stuff has come a long way over the last couple of years.

this one has been extremely helpful for saving time with eqing the many stray frequencies in mixing https://oeksound.com/plugins/soothe/

these have been wonderful for mixing sofar

as far as freeware goes, this is a great “extra” tool for transient shaping in mixing

Have you used UAD guitar plugins (with Unison)? If so, I’m very curious how Neural DSP Plini compares.

I use scuffham s-gear for guitar amp sim and it is very very good.

Kush UBK_1 - saved me buying an outboard comp for a loooong time. Utter classic

regarding comparing the only metric I use is my ears… haven’t tried the UAD stuff, but I’m sure it’s great. tested some other ones like the brainworx stuff, Diezel, Friedman, and other Neural DSP ones, which are all very good but for what I need it for the Archetype Plini seemed to be the most versatile.

Some more to add to my list:

Valhalla Delay: I’m seriously considering selling most of my other software delays at this point, because this one is so versatile and so good

DDMF MagicDeathEye: I can’t personally vouch for how closely it corresponds to the hardware, but this is the sweetest, most musical, hardest-to-screw-up compressor I have ever used. You can’t use it to add punch or to slam or pump or whatever – it’s a non-violent plugin  that just automatically makes stuff sound better.

Wavesfactory Cassette: absolutely my favorite tape plugin. I might use it a little too much; it’s sort of become part of my sound. As well as for tone and creative uses, I found I can use it to “correct” bad scratchy clipping and make it warm and gooey.

Plogue Chipcrusher: I’ve been getting to know it a bit better, and almost avoiding the presets and the “standard” sounds of bitcrushing and sample reduction in favor of the compressor, SPC delay, and sometimes some of the odd DAC models. It’s quite a nice lo-fier.

Goodhertz Lossy: I was going to check out Vulf Compressor, but honestly Lossy impressed me a lot more for my purposes. I demoed it and knew that I’d better pick it up

With regards to Valhalla their freqecho plug-in is an awesome pitch shifting stereo delay that they offer for free.
