Hi, I just joined and saw this–I may have something for the compilation. Please PM me (I haven’t yet figured this out!) to let me know if it’s still open for submissions. Regardless, I’ve enjoyed hearing folks’ works, and look forward to hearing the compilation when it’s out!

@scuto it’s still open! Try to get it in today if you can, you can upload to the google drive link in the top post. Or just send me a link to download if that doesn’t work

Glad to be part of this compilation. When you plan to release it? @jlmitch5

I’m gonna make some time this next weekend to master it. Once that and the art is finished, I’ll get it up on the lcrp bandcamp…hopefully in the middle of the month!

Oh sweet! Thanks, I’ll get it up today. \m/

Just uploaded! This thread has been super interesting and inspiring to follow.

This track is based around an instrument I built this winter. It’s just a transducer going through strings to a guitar pickup. It was intended to be used to add a Hardanger fiddle-like resonance to other instruments, but I’ve found it to be really satisfying to play as a feedback instrument by creating a loop back to the transducer. It feels good to be sculpting sound by holding the strings I don’t want playing, instead of building up sounds.

This patch is mostly a loop through my resonator, Springray, and Three Sisters. There’s a bit of string excitement coming from Ts-L and Mangrove, and it’s all going out through Morphagene and Mimeophone.

Here’s the resonator. Grid is unrelated but giving nice lighting:

Here are the two tracks I made inspired by this prompt. They’re both a little rough and ready - recorded in one take with minor edits. I recently picked up a Doepfer a-138m so this was a good excuse to experiment. The first track is a drone piece that uses a Lyra-8 along with the modular. The second track is some 175 bpm techno with the modular and a DFAM. Both tracks are probably too long but oh well!

The thing is beautiful!

Any build details on this device you can share?
Are the strings tuned / tuneable?

Thanks @kveye!!

@JaggedNZ Yep! I used zither tuning pins. I find they’re a bit finicky to get in tune but very stable. I think in this track it was tuned CFABBC. The transducer is the large one from adafruit, the pickup is for a telecaster, and the strings are guitar strings in various weights. Internally both the pickup and transducer are just connected directly to the 1/4" jacks.
It kind of works with a direct signal from modular but I’ve been using an external preamp to get a cleaner/stronger tone and more flexibility.
Here’s a picture of the tuning pegs:

hey everyone, just wanted to give an update on the mastering. Hoping to be done in the next couple days!

I haven’t been able to get up with the person who was planning on doing the art, so I was wondering if anyone might be interested in whipping together something for that. It will just require one square-ratio piece of art for the bandcamp page, doesn’t need to be anything too fancy, nor have any text on the front! I’m hoping to have it live by the end of the week (21st-ish), if that sort of turnaround time works.

I still am looking for someone to do some visual art for the compilation, is anyone interested?

You can see some of the other art for various lines compilations at the lcrp bandcamp. It’s a range of styles and techniques, so anything would work alongside this stuff!

If it helps, I’ll donate $50 on the artist’s behalf to the NC Artist Relief Fund, a local fund that is being set up to help artists who are dealing with economic hardship during the shutdown due to COVID-19. I’ll also donate $50 to the charity of the artist’s choice.

No deadline…I’m running a bit behind where I wanted to be on the mastering, but it’s getting done…hopefully will be up for a push to get it to the finish line this weekend.

Thanks!
John

EDIT: Have some users reach out interested in participating so I think we’re okay for now, thank you!

I might be able to try my hand at something. What text would you want on the cover, if any?

just sent you a message @smbols, thank you for reaching out!

This really looks like a lovely instrument — it looks well built and there are so many ways to play it. I’d love to mess around with one!

Thanks so much! I got a lot of help with the CNC work. I’m really looking forward to exploring it more and developing it more as I find new ways to play it. I’m hoping to do another version that includes the preamp internally and allows for some variance in string length. I’ll definitely post here when that happens.

Hey everyone just wanted to give an update on the comp:

  • 3 tracks left for mastering tweaks
  • have a rough order, after those are done, I’ll work on fades to make it all gel
  • @smbols is attempting something for the art, thanks so much for that!

I was talking with the lines moderators about an idea I had, and I think we are going to try it for this comp. Basically, my suspicion for these lines-initiated compilations (this, lcrp, etc.) is that the long threads on coordinating and getting everything set up becomes irrelevant to those not lending a track to the comp, so many who aren’t participating either actively or passively mute/ignore the thread. So when it comes time to share the finished product, it doesn’t have quite the impact it could.

What I’d like for us to try is to create a new thread with the first post introducing the comp once it’s finished, as well as having some content related to the release that might be interesting for a larger audience. For example, I love this video created and shared on the (norns/circle) collected thread’s first post. Anyone have any interest in making some video art like that with snippets of the compilation tracks? Another thing we can do is share information about how the tracks came to be, photos of the setups used, etc. (some of that is already here, we might want to move that over). Really totally open, suggestions encouraged. You can reach out to me over message too if you have an idea and want to get started on something like this.

G’day!

Pleased to see this is progressing and looking forward to hearing the results.

Thought I’d share this video, which I made while recording.

sounds like @lumena is interested in seeing about making some experimental video footage with excerpts from the compilation, sweet

https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/1bEbh5GosKe-9GxdByf7SqpDt42SHAK-2 here’s a proof on the overall level setting/mastering of the various tracks. Note that I didn’t mess with any sort of segue/fades on these yet, I’ll be doing that in the next day or two. If anyone has any constructive feedback about the changes in these, I am happy to take that into consideration and make some revisions, just shoot me a message (but please be quick with this feedback, I’m trying to finish this up soon!). Also let me know if there are any changes as to how you wish the track to be titled.

I tried above all else, to keep in mind the listener and make the tracks feel as if they could be listened to as a group (and with other releases) without feeling like you need to turn up or turn down playback. And tried to give a relatively even and balanced feel to the frequency spectrum. Otherwise, hopefully there is not too much difference you hear between your submitted track and the versions here!
