I have no idea about the differences between the two…
I don’t think aquarian hydrophones are supposed to be used that way but some of my students made great recordings burying it (the one we have is the buffered XLR version), what’s really missing to be used as a pseudo-geophone is a threaded insert to fix it, hence my interest in Lom’s take on it.

really? sure is not damaged (either the sensor or the charge amplifier)? the recordings I made with mine are quiet as if they were made in an anechoic chamber with no noise whatsoever.

Which of the hundreds of models that they make do you have? I’ve been looking to buy a cheap geophone for some time, but I can’t find anything that explains how to get audio out of them. Is it pretty straightforward?

I was practically on the verge of aggravation (and then I got a grip) that they ran such a short production. I got the email 10 minutes after it hit my inbox and they were gone.

I emailed and Jonas is considering whether or not he’ll produce any more. I asked about making the design open sourced and he said he’s considering that too. Curious about other options.

Honestly it might be… I used it only a few times (with a SD788), but it was acquiered way before I took the job, I guess lots of students used it before. I’ll definitely look into it next month when I go back to work :slight_smile:

don’t remember right now the model-numbers, I have three medium-sized and one miniature one.
but they are not “geophones” even if I suppose they could probably used as that.
for recording the audio you simply plug a BNC to TRS or XLR cable into the recording device. depending on the settings of the charge amplifier, you either have something audible or something below 2Hz.

A bit late no doubt, but I just purchased one and it’s boss. On board mics are pretty decent if handled correctly (or rather if the device is not handled at all) I have a pair of LOM Usi pros on the way, which I am very exited about. The menus and noise on my old H4n drove me absolutely bananas

The simplest solution here is to put a strip of velcro tape on the bottom and secure your cables with it. Just ensure that you trim in narrowly enough that it doesn’t block any mount (eg Rycote) you might want to attach to the bottom.

Uši Pros have arrived and they are pretty spectacular. Now to build a little stereo bar rig

Did you order the mounts to go along with it? Or are you planning to use a different solution? Thinking about picking up a pair of these also.

I didn’t order the mounts and wanted to explore options first, but I kinda wish I did order them. I believe the front Rycote lyre on the official Lom mount is a custom size for the Uši at about 13mm.
The next closest available Rycotes are for mics 19-25mm - 62/72 shore - which I’m sure could work fine with a bit of modification, and plus I would be able to use other mics at those diameters in the future. With the Lom mount I suppose I could potentially swap out the lyres for larger sizes too.

If anyone has suggestions or experience using a a standard 62/72 shore with these mics that would be helpful. I believe the INV 1 at 9.5mm would be too small in diameter to hold the mic?

Thanks for the input, I think I’ll just get them when I place my order, then. Let us know how it works out for you if you take the 19-25mm route though, some cross compatibility would be nice also.

…this is City recording, rather. I needed a recording of heavy traffic, a constant flow of vehicles in midcity. As always i took my stealthiest equipment and was selectively listening on a few spots. My experience in the city has been quite a ride and i‘ve learned to not wear headphones in dense places like buses and the like, but not today. I got apprehended by two cops…‘why are you filming this bank?‘ ‚what are you using this for?‘ they wanted to bodysearch me, which i refused😆 we had a rather unpleasant discussion on gathering data in public and then they wished me a pleasant day…

Well, you’re lucky, in New York there is no refusal of a search. You can tell them you don’t consent, but you’d better comply anyway. I’ve been stop and frisked by two rather burly undercovers while out photographing one night. Not a pleasant experience.
I was in the middle of loading film and they were convinced that they saw me wielding a knife. I guess a 35mm film leader glinting in the street light?

They went outside for a smokebreak and were just trying to intimidate me and i told them off. But their basing the discussion on gathering data made me cringe inside. I realised that not before long we would probably need permits to record public places. As long as it looks like you‘re carrying pro-equipment. I know LA is very restrictive with filming in public-does anybody have info on recording audio?

And your story would have not been different if you did have a permit. And also ppl could actually sue a person filming/recording them.

Just wondering did your Uši Pros arrive the rubber coating around the outside? I picked up a couple a few months ago and they didn’t have any cover like that, looks as though it would protect them from being knocked against stuff a little.

They arrived naked like yours, I just used some heat shrink wrap to protect the connections :wink:

Recently got a field recorder. Any advice is apreciated. I went for this version instead of the Older model due to the chance of adding mics.
