Hi everyone,
Longtime occasional lurker, first post here…
While I know they aren’t the best things to use for various reasons, I was wondering if anyone here had experience using in-ear headphones for monitoring, and might have some recommendations? I try to keep a super compact set-up because I’m often going around by by bicycle or traveling with other equipment, so on… so IEMs are a nice way for me to cut down on weight/size. Also already owning so many other headphones (Grados and DT770s for listening or working on things, some other semi-closed older headphones, so on) I’m reluctant to buy ANOTHER pair of closed/semi-closed headphones, and carrying around my DT770s is getting old since they take up almost as much space in my bag as everything else. I also need some in-ears for flying/traveling anyway, so nice to be able to kill two birds with one stone.
I might pick up a pair of Superluxe IEMs just because they are super inexpensive and their clones of other studio headphones I have heard were impressive for the price. But if anyone has tips for something in the roughly 100eur or under range, or if you want to give me 1000 reasons why IEMs are awful for field recording and I should scrap this idea I am open to tips.
At the moment I am using DT770 for headphones, Tascam DR-40v2 with a Rycote jammer and some crappy semi-flexi mini tripod which doubles as my grip to reduce handling noise, and sometimes a pair of micbooster omnis. I might try and swap the micbooster pair for some LOM mics though since I would rather have detachable cables and be able to choose my own length based on where I am going/what I am doing.
