There are three main reasons for my field recording practice–incorporating ambient field recordings in my modular music, making recordings for sound/multimedia installations, and as an exploration tool.I record a lot of water sounds, ambience of urban and wild spaces, crowd walla, machinery, fragments of strangers’ conversations, and anything else that catches my ear.

That’s essentially what I’m wanting to do too. It’s good to hear these mics work well in those situations.

I just got my LOM mikros but for the life of me I can’t get the wind bubbles on. I’m afraid I am going to damage the mics trying to force it any harder. Anyone have this experience or any suggestions? Thanks

Had the same issue when I got my wind bubbles. What finally worked was, jamming my fingertip into the wind bubble, and slipping the mic in as I withdrew my finger.

Could you maybe share some of the things you’ve recorded with them? I’m having a hard time finding demos of the Uši Pro’s.

Sure, I usually don’t post field recordings, since they get incorporated into other projects, but I’ll pull out a few samples to give you an idea of how the Usi sounds.

Got the bubblebees on the mikros finally and am amazed how well they work! Here’s my janky rig

I have also been experimenting with the Rode NT4. Less janky than the Usi mikros setup but I’m not sure it sounds any better TBH. Also it blasts through batteries much quicker (48v phantom power vs 24v on the USIs).

I had actually been wondering how the NT4’s compared to the Uši’s. Interesting how well they hold up.

I can’t speak for the mikros but the NT4 is built like a tank. I’ve had mine for 10+ years and it hasn’t a scratch on it.

I own a NT4 and Usi Pro. To me both are different species, one is XY stereo and another is A-B stereo, hence that the application/ pros and cons are different too.

NT4 is a very good mic, also support 9V battery so you don’t necessary need phantom power.

I’ve had a similar setup for years (nt4 and dpas instead of usis) and I’m looking to downsize a bit: The nt4 is SO bulky and heavy (especially with a shockmount and grip) and I hardly ever use it - I prefer my dpas generally - so it’s just not worth lugging around all that extra weight. Thinking of saving up for an at8022 or something even smaller; any suggestions?

I also have a BP4025 (which is identical to AT8022 but better specs). For BP4025 I use it with a BBG windshield with relevant windjammer, plus a pistol grip, added up these stuffs are slightly more than what NT4 does, mainly is because the BBG is relatively big.

I’m thinking of just using a fluffy without a windscreen which would minimize even more. How sensitive to handling noise is the bp4025? The nt4 is ridiculous: For example, any tiny muscle twitch while holding a camcorder - not the mic - will be picked up even through a shockmount.

BP4025 is a sensitive mic too, it needs more care than NT4.

To eliminate the handling noise on both mic, the blimp is the best solution. However to me I do not want to carry to many big stuffs on bag for daily basic, so that is why I settled on BBG.

Shock mount is essential but also need to take care on the cables. My solution is (on both mic), I use a short 5-pin cable to connect the mic with the other end ‘embed’ on the pistol grip, it eliminate 100% noise from shock, cabling to handling.

Well I went ahead and ordered the Uši Pro’s and a Priezor. Considering picking up the mikroUšis too but that decision can wait till morning

Has anyone used a Tascam DR-60d (Mk 2) for field recording? I’ve just ordered one for my DSLR but figure that the spec could offer excellent results as a field recording device (paired with decent mics, of course)

Yup, I’ve been using a dr60d as my main recorder for a number of years now. Nice clean preamps, but not very powerful so super quiet ambiences don’t work that well. NOTE: invest in a power bank - the dr60d has abysmal battery life (like, low battery after 10min of continuous recording).
