I’m looking to up my field recording game. I have an H4N and a dynamic mic. I would be willing to consider upgrading my field recorder but assumed it’s fine for now. I want to use my recordings to mangle and process mainly.

Would people recommend some usis, an ab stereo mic or new field recorder?

Thanks in advance.

Dynamic mics are hardly ever used in field recording so I’d invest in a better mic first.

Brilliant, thank you. It should arrive early next week - excitement!

I dont really have a budget for a new recorder right now, but would the Usi Pros be a good mic for (and compatible with) a Zoom H1N?

Right. Id only mentioned it to give an idea of what I already have.

So the question is xy or ab mic?

So, there is no such thing as an AB mic, I assume you mean a pair of omnis which is what id recommend as the h4n has an x/y already; even if it’s not the best x/y, diversity is important.

Yes. Thats what I was referring to. I misunderstood a post above. Thank you.

Yes, the Pros paired well with my H1 and offered a perceptible jump in quality that I enjoyed until I bought an H6 a couple of weeks ago.

I’m picking up this new friend tomorrow. RQ-J36. stereo mic.

Only had a little zoom H1 before, and I know that the mic on this is much, much less sensitive, but i like the One Button to Record, and from what I read, it’s a classic bootlegger recorder, and I’ve been wanting to do some re-amp to tape stuff, so this might get fun.

What’s the cheapest, half decent, portable, digital field recorder with 2 x XLR mic ins and real 48V phantom power on both? The Zoom H4n Pro? Quite fancy taking my pair of KM84s out into a field!

Also for ambient field recording, do people generally prefer Cardioid or Omni mics, or does it depend?

Zoom H4N Pro is a good start. Be sure to use a 8GB or smaller SD card to get a reasonable boot time, or if you don’ mind the slower boot time larger SD card is also supported.

Cardioid/ Omni/ Supercardiroid, etc, with different polar patterns you have do different stereo miking techniques, i.e:

a pair of omni: A-B
a pair of cardioid: A-B, XY, ORTF
cardiod with figure eigth: Mid Side

Different miking methods have its own pros and cons, I think most field recordists (including me) prefer XY and AB for ambience stuffs.

I use a pair of Uši Pro’s with a Nagra 7 recorder, and I always carry an Olympus LS-p4 with me.

i’d like be to hear you’re thoughts on this recorder. Does it have plug-in-power for something like the Usi 3.5mm?

I currently have an H5, which is … fine? I don’t love it for a number of reasons and would really like something more portable, better sounding, and will still work with my Usi’s.

I’m also trying to figure out how the ls-p4 compares to something like the sony pcm-m10 or other small recorders.

It does have plugin power, although I have never used it myself. The recordings I made with the built-in microphones are perfectly usable. Not as nice as my Nagra, of course, but definitely of good quality. I have no experience wit a Sony m-10, but it does sound better than the Zoom H recorders (to my ears at least). And the fact that it is so tiny makes it easy to carry wherever you go.

The plug in power works great. It is a VERY nice recorder. Even the auto gain, wich I would normalt never think of using is really good.

Also the mic in can take a pretty decent hot signal when set to gain 1 so it can work as a line in. At least it pairs very nice with my Mixpre-D preamp.

Would very much recommend the Olympus!

Thanks for the recommendations @KristofferLislegaard and @Vunz. The price is definitely right, since a used PCM-M10 still sells for around $300 USD.

So after thinking it over for a while, I finally bit the bullet and ordered a pair of Uši Pro’s and a pair of mikroUši’s, as well as a MixPre-6. While I know it might be overkill, are there any interesting 4-mic stereo setups I should try for environment recording?

Would you mind saying why this is important for you?

I’m ready to purchase a pair of mikros and curious if anyone else has input on what differences to consider between the two (besides sound).
