any advice on budget yet decent mics? I currently use an H5 and looking for something (possibly two) for both foley at home and a shotgun for more focused outdoor sound gathering.

the modified Oktava mics

could be a good way to go. You can also find the Oktava mics without the mods for less (used on Reverb.com for example).
Personally, I’ve never liked shotgun mics but gotten a lot out of supercardioid mics which are very directional but not as sterile and hyper-directional as shotgun mics. Also, having a small pair of omnis can be useful. I can’t remember if I found this link here or on the nature recordists list-serve but these are super cheap:

thanks for the links

no problem. One thing with the Oktava mics I wasn’t thinking through so well is the windscreens since they’re marketed for studio use. I also don’t know how they hold up to humidity if you’re recording somewhere humid. There’s a bunch of things here too to continue the vendor recommendation:

my oktava mk12 will happily crackle when exposed to moderate dampness (ie october evening on the countryside nearby a pond). Any condenser (non-RF) mic will do under various amounts of humidity, although some will need heavy tropical rain, or more

Hiko! If you have an old iphone get the tascam im2. Because its old you can get it ridiculously cheap and it has the same mic capsules as the d40 handheld recorder. I got mine on amazon for 1000 yen.

Wow 1000yen!?
its great deal
Unfortunately my phone and iPad are little bit newer ones …
Do you have any recommendation mic for lightning jack one?
Like around 10000 yen price range ?($100 ish )

I think i have 30pin to lightning adaptor cable and also found iM2 on Craigslist for $5.
I will give a shot .
hopefully This works.
Thank you so much !!

I just got one last night.
Are you able to monitor the sound and record together with im2?

yes just use headphones. also I hated the tascam app so I use rode app, its free

Unfortunately I can’t listen recorded sound unless I disconnect im2…
Also I can’t monitor real time either .
Probably because of the adapter/my phone or my iOS.
My phone detects im2 as audio io somehow.
(according to ASK audio’s website.)

But still more than good to start.
I will record sounds at park.

hmm usually you can. I stopped using mine due to changing to android.

does anyone have recommendations for (affordable) field mixer to go into a zoom h5. Trying to defeat preamp hiss

I’m reading it now and I’m loving it! Thanks for the recommendation!

Rode NTG2, AT897, or Sennheiser MKE600 are decent interference tube mics considering their low price. But they will have some self noise.

Depends on ā€œaffordableā€. I’d go with a used Sound Devices MixPre (first version seems to go around 500USD). There might be some less-expensive boutique equivalents out there, but i don’t have any specific reference in mind right now.
Is the preamp noise on the H5 so bad (send us examples)? What mic is used with it ?

it’s a lot better than the H4n but could be quieter.
