Wonderful - thank you for posting this!

Thanks vinc, Hovercraft, hawksquill, Catchthehare and every one who answered my question.
Think I will go for the MixPre 3. Right now when I have a financial opportunity that might not return.

What do you MixPre-users use as energy source?
I not sure if I should go for the MX-LMount sled and use Sony L-Battery or just get an USB-powerbank?
Any suggestions?

An Anker 20100 mAh usb c power bank has worked well for me. It’ll power the MixPre 6 for all day with power to spare. You could use a smaller bank for the 3 if you want to save weight and space. As a back-up, I have 4 good quality NiMH cells in the battery pack— they’re good for about 40 minutes.

So I’ve been doing some tests with my Uši Pro’s, and I’m realizing the Bubblebee windshields aren’t quite cutting it in a steady wind. Of course they cut back on distortion but I still get a lot of low bass noise. I’d like to look for something better, but since the Uši’s are so small, I’m not sure what windshields would fit them. I like some of the smaller Rycote windshields like what is pictured below. Would I be able to fit the Uši Lyre mounts inside these? Or is this all overkill? Are there any better options?

Agree the Bubblebee’s are only of use in light breezes. I’ve also been searching for a reasonable solution. Rycote windshield kits like the one you posted would be the best solution, but a full kit runs $500-$600 for one mic.Yes, you can swap out the lyres for the USI ones. The next step down is the Rycote BBG system–just under $200/mic.I’m thinking of buying one set and seeing how that works. The full windshields have a great reputation, while I’ve read more mixed opinions on the BBG.

If you do try it out, please let me know, I’d love to hear a comparison

I use Anker 26800 PD+ (maybe not the exact model no.) to supply my Mixpre via USB-C port. It is officially approved by SD, but I believe there are also several models that are compatible too.

The Rycote customer service is excellent, so drop them a line to ask about options. I once contacted them about a Rycote for my Nagra mezzo and they fitted and manufactured it specifically for me at no extra cost (I assume I was just first to ask…).

Baby ball gags would make more sense for omnis - as then you can still work with wider spacings. Two stereo mics in a windshield makes more sense for XY, MS or ORTF in my opinion. Not sure the gags go that small though…

Yeah I like the size of the baby ball gags but it looks like it’s just a hole at the end. How would you mount lavaliers in them?

Since I got my Mix Pre 3 in 2017 I’ve been using a Cygnet powerbank (~10000 mAh) It performs quite well, though only has enough charge to deliver to two lots of phantom power. I’ve been meaning to upgrade to something more robust for awhile.

You should try Anker, I believe 268000mAh is the max capacity that we can carry it on plane.

Talk about the mobile battery, one thing that annoy me the most is the USB-C cable, I am looking for a good quality L-shape plug cable for such application.

FYI - the Cygnet battery’s actually 6,000 mAh

Thank you - I’ll consider this battery option! The USB-C is a big headache, isn’t it? I tend to bundle mine up and use a rubber band to fasten around the top of the battery. I stuck velcro tabs on the base of the battery to attach to the MixPre. Works in a very simple way…

I asked Jonas Gruska @LOM about windshield for Usi a few years ago. I think he told me that he use Rycotes "Stereo Windshield Kit (ORTF)”

Edit: just confirmed correct windshield.

Thanks for the reply. The Anker looks like a good option. I also like @tristan_louth_robins solution with velcro.

Not specifically a field recording, but I thought it might interest some here. I was astonished by the accompanying sound in this video. It’s compelling and terrifying. For context, this is video from a crew member of the Kingscote CFS (Country Fire Service) at the height of the devastating Kangaroo Island bushfires in early January 2020. These are the fires that burnt two-thirds of the island. The crew here are moving along the main road near Flinders Chase and Hanson Bay Roads. (These are the same roads I drove along about 5-6 weeks before the bushfires hit.)

The crew have just passed through one firestorm and are following another crew who are guiding them. At about a minute in, a second firestorm erupts and the crews have no choice but to drive through it.

Of course, it’s difficult to seperate from the terrifying video, but there’s something so unsettling about the sounds that you can hear in the cabin: the regular pulse of mechanical air flow, the slow rumble of the truck, the smack of debris, the (relative) calm and anxiety of the crew and radio cross-talk. Amongst all of this, the raging fire is muted by the confines of the cabin. It’s unlike anything I’ve listened to before.

Also, the bravery of these guys - given the situation - is incredible.

As Coronavirus has caused a total collapse (temporarily, hopefully) in trade for me and my wife we have been going out walking on the Moors near where we live in rural Northern England. The noticeable silence really struck me yesterday. No aeroplanes - normally the bane of my field recording attempts. We are not on any main flight paths but there’s usually a distant drone high up when I want to record something. Looks like I have time and the opportunity to make some rural field recordings! Stay safe everyone.

i was looking forward to doing this, but the french love for absurd rules temporarily forbids to go out for a lonely walk (that’s not exercise, mind you). I’m not sure i want to import the covid discusiion here, but indeed there is a huge drop of the sounds of planes and road hum. This absence is worth documenting wherever one can.

Fair comment - agree!

Wow, that’s cool. I have often had recordings ruined by planes so high I can’t even see them. It’s really ironic, that once you are out in the wilderness you are disturbed anyway. Seems like this is an opportunity then!

I thought it ironic also that I became conscious of the aircraft not being there. Apart from when out recording, these sounds tend to just become part of the sonic landscape and don’t feature much. Agree, a real opportunity now to obtain some decent sounds of nature!
