i have a basic question. i am lining one mono JRF hydrophone into my sony d100. how can i monitor it in both headphones easily?

Presumably one could record in stereo with two of these. Just need a sync clap from 1/2 way between them to sync them up. The mics could be as close or far apart as you like. The hiss could be a show stopper for field recording work, though. I ordered two and am looking forward to receiving them someday a few months after I forgot I had ordered them.

Is anyone using a mount alternative to the Rycote one sold by LOM for their Usi’s?

a long shot and I am assuming at this point I just lost a months work, but anyone got any recovery tips for trying to fix corrupted files before I just give up on this SD card? I have a DR-40, and the files show their correct size if I drag them on to my hard drive, but won’t open/play, and I get an file error if I try and play them back on the recorder. I tried importing to Audacity as raw data and got the correct file length, just empty. I’m hoping its something with the card and I shouldn’t expect this again from the recorder.

PhotoRec could be worth trying. If the card still shows up on your computer it usually does the trick.

Has anybody compared Zoom SSH-6 and MSH-6 mics on field recordings?
The shotgun seems to have a higher noise floor but it captures better the natural gain of sounds which it’s pointed at.

This weekend the Reveil 2020 transmission loops the earth at sunrise, highlighting the Dawn Chorus and other live environmental sounds from (UTC+1) 5AM on Saturday May 2 to 6AM Sunday, May.

Hello, it is my first post here, thanks so much for all the information you are sharing.
I’m quite new to field recording, and in the last couple of weeks i’ve been trying to record the sounds of things fermenting. I first tried with an audiomoth, thinking of the fact that it has a wide frequency range, but it failed as the signal to noise ratio was way to high for the volume of the fermentation process. Now i’m waiting for another batch to start fermenting which I’m planning to record with 2 hydrophones and a H5. But i am afraid that won’t work either ( will come back with news in the next couple of days). Was also thinking to buy a pair of USI. Do you think it would be a good idea? Has any of you had experience with this type of sounds?

Welcome! Haven’t recorded fermentation, but did attach a pair of USI Pros to my hot water heater, and got some interesting sounds. The USI Pros are sensitive and quiet mics, so they’re nice for any subtle sounds. The hydrophone is also a great idea—perfect for capturing any sounds in liquids. The sounds will be quite different between the USIs and the hydrophone, so it would be good to record both ways.

The problem is that most microphones aren’t built for very high frequencies, even if you slow it down the microphone won’t capture much above 20,000hz. The most notable is the Sanken CO-100K, which goes to 100,000 hz, and I am sure would do exactly what you want. If you buy one for me I’ll do my best to make you the field recordings you want :grin:

I’m curious to hear about these two as well. Looking to add one of them to my H5 soon and I’m leaning towards the MSH-6 since I don’t know if I’d really care for something particularly directional like the SSH.

I’ll get the MSH-6, lower self noise and smaller footprint. I’ll post some impressions once I get it.

Just found this video demo which was helpful for me. On most of the examples of recording a specific subject, the SSH sounds better, or at least louder, but when they do the stereo spread test I much prefer the sound of the MSH when I close my eyes. Comparing the sections where they have the side mics at +6 gain, I can pinpoint where the sound is coming from much better on the MSH example than the SSH, and that’s what I’m interested in capturing: a well defined and detailed full stereo image.

I’ve seen it a couple of times. Worth checking this video too, to discard the SSH-6 :slight_smile:
There’s a little check on the MSH-6 which I timestamped, but the rest is just on the SSH-6 and the H5. The guy seems to know his stuff.

This was really quite something to listen to. Almost disorientating at times as we pottered around the kitchen and the back garden. Also there was a hushed presenter on resonance extra who was introducing mics as they switched the broadcast to folllow the dawn. He sounded like a commentator at a snooker game. Ha.

I really wanted to participate but didn’t get around to it. Next time.
