Is there any place in the EU that sells the Clippy EM272?

i found a EU store here: Clippy EM272 Stereo Microphone - Veldshop.nl

These are a Clippy EM272 stereo pair and yes, exactly from Veld @Ricardo_Peixoto.

I’ll put some water sounds up soon

hey folks

reading up thread i’ve gotten two anker portable batteries i thought would work well for field recording trips and unfortunately neither seems suited for the task

reading more online and via youtube it might just be the wrong cable (for enabling usb c charging on my recorder)

my recorder? sound devices mixpre 10m
my batteries? anker 325 (powercore essential 20K mAh) + anker 747 (powercore 26K mAh)

i’ve used the cables provided with each and tried every other usb c cable in my home…nothing works so i decided to ask here

hopefully i can find someone else with a similar setup and sort the problem out with just purchasing the correct charging cable

thanks!

Unfortunately, the MixPre 10 can’t be powered via a USB battery pack like the MixPre 3/6. I use a 12V battery pack meant to power video cameras with a barrel to hirose connector cable.

I do use an Anker battery for my MixPre6 (version 1) and and it works fine. I did run into a problem recently where I was using it with the wrong cable and it read what I later learned to be low power mode. I called Sound Devices in a bit of a panic (on-site, documenting an installation), asked for tech support and they immediately identified the problem, told me what cable to get and from there, was great - recording 4-channels from Soundfield mic and happy again. They were super helpful and friendly too I must say

I use Zoom F series recorders, as Hoverecraft states, power via the hirose connector & for batteries I use the ones designed to jump start a car. These have a 12v DC connector which you connect the supplied jump leads to, I just use the same tap to supply the 12v so make up leads to fit. The batteries can be picked up pretty cheap.

I haven’t tried any yet but you can find some USB to Hirose 12v cables/adapters that includes the required DC/DC converter. Here’s the one I’m thinking of buying for an older Mixpre.

Since I live in the States and haven’t found Clippy EM272s on offer locally, does anyone know of a U.S. store that sells them? I’m concerned about duties, customs, processing fees and the like if I order from micbooster in the UK.

If no one knows of a dealer in the U.S., then how does the SO.1 compare to the 272? Has anyone used a pair of SO.1s for field recording?

I was thinking of using two 272s or SO.1s with a Zoom F3.

The SO1 uses the EM272 capsule per its description. It should sound nearly the same as the Clippy or LOM mics using those capsules–especially the versions using PiP via a 1/8" jack. I haven’t used the SO1s.

I wouldn’t worry about duties or customs issues ordering from Micboosters. I’ve ordered a number of items from small manufacturers and retailers in Europe over the last several years and never had an issue with them getting to me or unexpected import costs–though time getting through customs can be slow.

Another option to look at in the US are the XX lavs from Naiant. I’ve found the low noise version compares favorably in practical use to my LOM Usi and mikroUsi mics. They can be found via Reverb.

Thanks so much for the detailed and considered response, mnm207.

I had no problems with customs duties on the pair of clippys I bought from kel in the uk, ymmv tho

I’m enjoying an F3 and a Clippy 272 pair a lot. Customs clearance and fees shouldn’t be a hassle, not sure how it works in the US tho. At least here in socialist Europe it’s super easy.

Here’s my makeshift cabincore setup for forest and water sounds.

Yes it’s a stick.

Iā€˜ve had a pair of XLR clippy mics for a few years, and actually just took delivery on a PIP pair of 272’s for use with my Sony PCM-D100.

Both ordered from micbooster with delivery to the US. No customs/etc issues at all. The recent order delivered quite quickly actually.

What cable did you use to convert the clip-y’all to XLR?

Thanks, everyone, for the reassurances. The LOMs are sold out, of course, so I ordered the EM272s and a Zoom F3. As a former editor, I own a plethora of rulers, so I might try one of those for mounting purposes.

Noisetrees: Don’t rub it in! I’d move there next week if I could!

BTW, I love that photo and it looks as though you’re using the recorder I ordered as well.

I’ll be taking your photo with me for inspiration if I get the chance to revisit the house in Oregon where most of the Clan of the Cave Bears series was written. My friend is related to the writer.

The house is next to a beach laved with celadon waters and facing a huge, primeval rock. It is a private beach and the natural sounds are myriad and uninterrupted. The trees just off the shore are skeletal year round and the twigs resemble the stick in your photo.

My pair has XLR plugs by default.
